Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

It’s fine if you’re staying at the airport - you’ll be excited and soon get over it

PonyPatter44 · 25/02/2024 12:32

Sorry but you are being really daft. It's a few hours of inconvenience for a lovely holiday. Noone likes being tired, but being tired when you have to go to work or do the washing is not the same as being tired by the pool with a cocktail!

Love an early flight, brekkie at the airport, get to holiday in time for dumping suitcases then lunch, wonder round to get your bearings, get some tea then early night then up fresh for the next day!
I hate late flights home though as when it’s time to go home I just want to go! lol!

I agree! I had a 2am flight home from a holiday once - I just wanted to get back!

Wanttoshavemyhairoff · 25/02/2024 12:32

YABU We’ve managed to get the 6am flight every year for the past few years with two children and although no one likes getting up in the middle of the night , you can always catch up on sleep

we have to get up at 2.15am for 6am flight , we get to bed asleep for around 11pm ( dc asleep by 8pm) and then we all sleep on the plane for two hours .

Its lovely to arrive in the morning , we generally have some food , pack everything into wardrobes and into the pool for a few hours before heading up for an hours nap .

TheChosenTwo · 25/02/2024 12:33

You really don’t need to be at the airport for a short haul Ryanair flight 😂

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 25/02/2024 12:33

It's not classed as long haul is it? So chances are the check in desk won't actually open until 4am to drop your cases. Get up, shower (or do that before bed), get dressed and go.. you can have breakfast at the airport. I don't understand why you think you need to be there for 3am?

WaltzingWaters · 25/02/2024 12:33

relax and think about the fact you’ll be able to nap on the beach by the afternoon!
forget about makeup for the flight! Be up at 3:45, get dressed, clean teeth and be at the airport for 4am. A lot of check ins don’t open until 2 hrs before anyway. Snooze on the plane and you’ll be grand!

BeaRF75 · 25/02/2024 12:33

Get up 3.30am, clean your teeth, get dressed, really no need for make up, check in 3.45am (ish), straight through security, coffee and food. Sleep on plane. Done.

getionnn · 25/02/2024 12:34

It says on my boarding pass arrive 3 hours before for international flight 💁‍♀️

YABU. Both about the timings and about the dread ruining it for you.

If it's that big a deal skip the makeup and airport breakfast. Get up at 3.45, chuck on clothes you've already looked out. Head to airport for 4. You'll easily still have time for a coffee and croissant before boarding and get a bacon roll on board.

Shower before bed, makeup minimal, hair tied back, leggings and a hoody on for the flight. 15 minutes getting ready, max.

Don't let it ruin it for you. It really won't be that bad. I would take an early morning flight over a late night flight, I hate them.

shenandoahvalley · 25/02/2024 12:34

I’m with you OP, although Ryanair is more horrific than the 6am start! Still, it’s a lovely and thoughtful gift. Accept it with good grace.

sleepyscientist · 25/02/2024 12:34

Buy a security fast pass and skip the make up. I wear it everyday but would just do it on the plane. Surely you won't be wearing make up round the pool anyway.

afinethingindeed · 25/02/2024 12:35

I think YABU.
Although I appreciate that I'm good with very little sleep so my experience is different. I exclusively book early morning flights so I can make the most of day 1. I hate late flights so 3pm would actually be horrible for me.

Pickledperr · 25/02/2024 12:35

You really don't need to be there 3 hours ahead of the flight nor do you need make-up. Just roll out of bed throw on a hoodie and go.

Nacknick · 25/02/2024 12:35

Do you actually need to put on makeup and have breakfast before the flight? I would stay in bed longer and just have a tea or coffee. You can always take or buy something to eat on the plane if you’re worried about having to wake up so early?

TheChosenTwo · 25/02/2024 12:33

exactly.. can’t even check in your bag 3 hours early so she’ll be stuck the check in side of the airport for an hour 🤷‍♀️

TedMullins · 25/02/2024 12:36

Yes you’re being ridiculous. I’ve got chronic fatigue and even I can manage early morning flights. Nobody actually gets to the airport 3 hours before! Just arrive at 4am, get up at 3.45, don’t bother with makeup.

yes you need to arrive 3 hours before preferably so dragging yourself up at 2.30 Is about right.

Mine said the same, got there 3hrs before and was sat waiting for 1.5 hours until the check in desks opened!

OutOfTheHouse · 25/02/2024 12:37

Can you check in your bags the night before?

As for make up etc. do it after you are through security.

theresnolimits · 25/02/2024 12:37

Gran Canaria isn’t classed as an international flight - you only need to be there at 4. Desk won’t even be open until then.

TicketyBoo11 · 25/02/2024 12:38

Well that’s gratitude for you…maybe he should be taking someone else. Get a grip love..

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 25/02/2024 12:38

Which airport is it? I never arrive more than 2 hours before take off unless there's some known chaos going on.

Snooze on the plane or your sun lounger when you get there.

Do your make up after check in or on the plane.

titchy · 25/02/2024 12:39

Take hand luggage only, or can you use baggage drop the night before? Check in on-line.

That only leaves you security to think about. You absolutely don't need to arrive three hours early to go through security. Arrive at 4 you'll be fine. In fact you'll still be twiddling your thumbs, particularly at a small airport with few early flights.

Titanoboa · 25/02/2024 12:39

I actually pay extra for early morning flights. I hate arriving on holiday in the dark, I want to see the sun! We get to Cyprus mid afternoon, its a great time to get checked in and have a drink in the heat😎
