Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

We have a 6am flight from Birmingham in the summer so have booked a hotel the night before. Birmingham/the airline have twilight check in so suitcases will be gone the night before. Also planning on booking the lounge which has breakfast, drinks etc included although doesn't open until 4:30am. Plan as much as you can to make the morning as easy as possible. We have young children so I'm not looking forward to it either being so tired all day but it was the only flight time and we'll be excited on the day

BarrelOfOtters · 25/02/2024 13:48

2 hours before and pay for fast track security.

hopscotcher · 25/02/2024 13:50

Your feelings are valid whatever they are, but I think this is a bit odd, especially as you're staying in a hotel 2 mins from the terminal. What is it you're 'dreading'?

3 hours is not a long haul flight 🤣🤣 mid haul depending on which regulator you ask but long haul is generally considered more than 6 hours flight time.

Anyway, OP I'm with you, I hate early ANYTHING but I've done this previously and staying in the airport hotel makes so much difference mentally imo. You'll be glad of it when you get to have lunch in the sunshine 🍹

They didn't mean three hours was a long-haul flight.

They meant that for long-haul, you check in three hours early but for short-haul it's generally two at the earliest.

gabsdot45 · 25/02/2024 13:56

I'd get everything ready the night before and up at 4.30, get dressed and stroll 2 mins to the terminal. You'll have loads of time. Sleep on the plane

mynameiscalypso · 25/02/2024 13:58

I'd hate a 3pm flight, what a waste of a day. You can't really do much before because you're faffing around waiting to leave and you can't do anything when you get there other than have a dinner and go to bed.

Grazie234 · 25/02/2024 13:59

We live 1.5 hours from Gatwick and we've never got up at 2.30 for a 6am flight!

Queues at security etc will not be backed up with an early flight. I'd be getting to the airport for 4/ 4.15 at the earliest. Early night the night before, sleep on the plane and you'll have holiday mood to get you through the rest of the day. Can you just not wear make up for the morning, no one will notice, or at least put it on when you're in the departure lounge.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 25/02/2024 13:59

YABU. Many people would love two holidays a year. Why do y have to get up so early if staying at airport hotel? You only have to be there at 4.

Rosestulips · 25/02/2024 14:00

YABU. Just go to bed at 9

Fulshaw · 25/02/2024 14:03

We did a flight at that time and I wouldn’t do it again. Lack of sleep ruined the first couple of days of the trip. And there’s no point getting there before lunchtime as you won’t get in your room til 3-4pm so you’re left hanging around the pool/beach in your travel clothes and luggage in tow.

Picklestop · 25/02/2024 14:04

getionnn · 25/02/2024 12:29

Get up at 2.30 to put a little make up on and be at airport for 3
It's with Ryanair so need to check in suitcase then go through security then grab breakfast
Normally board 30 mins before which is 5.30 am

You are being absurd with your timings. For a short European flight like that, 90 minutes will be fine. Have shower night before, have everything ready to go, get a cereal bar for breakfast. I wouldn’t be leaving the room until at least 4:15am.

You can always drop your luggage off early, change in the toilets and go out - that's what do every time we catch an early flight.

willWillSmithsmith · 25/02/2024 14:07

It’s a one off. You’re being a bit namby pamby tbh.

MariaLuna · 25/02/2024 14:08

Hotels have a left luggage room, no need to drag it over the beach.....
Pack casual clothes in your hand luggage.

Zippedydoodahday · 25/02/2024 14:09

I genuinely would rather not go on holiday than have a flight at a stupid time. Just can't be doing with it

newyearnewnothing · 25/02/2024 14:13

I'm wondering if you have ever flown or actually have any concept of timings at an airport???

Rycbar · 25/02/2024 14:14

I hate getting up early too but I make expectations for holidays!! I went away last year with my friends with a 7am flight. I just didn’t go to bed - left at 3am and then got a good sleep on the plane (because I was so tired). We were then by the pool for 2pm! I’ll do the same this year. I think you’re definitely BU.

Pasadenadreaming · 25/02/2024 14:14

Yeah I would actually find this a bit stressful too but I think overall it would be worth it for the holiday. I often don't sleep well the night before I am going away anyway due to excitement/anxiety whatever so probably wouldn't make too much difference. Just try and get some earlier nights in the run up to it so you're not already tired.

Capmagturk · 25/02/2024 14:15

We always go on an early morning flight, sleep on the plane then you get there and have the whole day ahead of you. Yabu

GlasgowGal82 · 25/02/2024 14:15

YABU most of the flights to holiday places go at 5-7am so we've flown at this time lots of time, even for long weekends. If you are staying in the airport hotel you won't need to get up earlier than 3am, and you could easily stretch that to 4am if you're willing to get breakfast after security. We've found that you tend to get straight into your room too, rather than having to wait until official check-in. Have a snooze on the plane or a wee power nap by the pool/when you first check into your room and you'll be fine.

Toottooot · 25/02/2024 14:16

Why can you nae dee yer face in the airport? Much rather arrive in GC in the morning than take aff at 3 and nae arrive til 8/9 at night and lose a day?

Capmagturk · 25/02/2024 14:17

I'd be at the airport at half four for that flight. Get up at 4, bed at 10pm. Sleep on plane. You don't NEED to be there three hours before that's just when they will open check in.

Wetblanket78 · 25/02/2024 14:17

If it's just you and DH YABU you can always catch up on sleep. But I would never do an early morning flight with DC again.

TeenLifeMum · 25/02/2024 14:17

You just get to destination then lay on a lounger by the pool for the rest of the day sipping cocktails occasionally.

But then my job makes me do on call hours so I’ll get a call at 3am then be at work for 9am.
