Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

We have a 6am return flight from our 2 week holiday at Easter, that's far more depressing.

Get up at 2.30 to put a little make up on and be at airport for 3
It's with Ryanair so need to check in suitcase then go through security then grab breakfast
Normally board 30 mins before which is 5.30 am

Make up?? At that time in the morning??

Because it’s gross, he’s a total wanker and it’s also never actually cheap. I hate how basic it is and how you’re treated like cattle. It’s a firm no from me.

I’m with you on this. The owner is a hideous, rude little man. They do treat passengers like cattle and are known to overbook seats and bump people off when they turn up for their flights. I have chosen to pay far more for a flight to Ireland on Air Lingus from Manchester (two hours drive from me), rather than pay money to Ryanair who fly from my local airport.

Call me a snob if you like, but you get what you pay for and I won’t give my money to arseholes.

Sorry, but that smacks of somebody with more money than sense who cuts their nose off to spite their face. O’Leary doesn’t give a shit so it’s just meaningless, expensive and inconvenient virtue signaling.

Maybe, but that’s my prerogative!

Honestly- some of you are really spoilt. But you truly made me laugh. Get a grip truly!

Early flights = one extra day on holiday- relax, enjoy. Or go to Skeggy if you'd rather. Struuuf!

erm good for you ? I guess.

not everyone can afford to ‘make a stand’ though

This is common practice for all airlines. I’ve been on delayed flights with easyJet, flag carriers etc, that waited all they could for people to take them up on their offers to be bumped off an overbooked flight (£500 + hotel offered once for a 1h flight!), before they had to start refusing boarding.

All airlines overbook as a % of passengers will not turn up on the day. The problem arises, of course, when uncharacteristically everyone turns up.

tootyflooty · 27/02/2024 11:48

You will have the best part of the day at your destination. rather than spend all day on day 1 travelling, just enjoy the hotel stay and go to bed a little earlier. You can chill for the rest of the day when you arrive.

Judecb · 27/02/2024 12:11

You do NOT need to be up at 2.30 if you're 2 mins from the terminal!!! Check in on line and get to the terminal at 04.20 - so get up at 04.00. Sleep on the plane and enjoy an extra day in the sun!!

jolies1 · 27/02/2024 12:12

BIossomtoes · 27/02/2024 09:41

It’s clearly a long time since you flew with them. They stopped free refreshments years ago.

I got a free tea and shortbread flying city to Edinburgh last month?

LuckySantangelo35 · 27/02/2024 09:19

Such snobby comments re Ryanair.

what’s so bad about it?!

it’s travel, it’s a means to an end! It doesn’t have to be amazing

I have flown Ryanair. They are ok but the flight attendants have to try flogging you stuff you don't want and they charge extra for baggage, so not as cheap as they appear.

wombat1a · 27/02/2024 13:12

Can you check when the desks open, we had one of these once, arrived at the airport 2 hrs beforehand for a 6am flight and found the desks didn't open until 1hr before the flight, ended up sitting around for an hr when I could have stayed in bed.

I know. I’m not criticising others for using them.

ElaineMBenes · 27/02/2024 13:57

I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.

This seems rather dramatic!
I've done a flight at this time then worked as soon as I've arrived!

Iwantmyoldnameback · 27/02/2024 15:32

I think this whole thread is a stealth boast actually. Op wants everyone to know what she got for Valentine's Day without looking smug.

And to the person who doesn't give money to arseholes - I bet you do.

Oh dear....you need to get up at 2.30am to put your make up on. Get a life. 🙄🤡🤡

ftp · 27/02/2024 16:35

puzzledout · 27/02/2024 02:19

@ftp and as 100 people have pointed out, a 3am start is not necessary! It's just OP being awkward!

I'm sure your DH wouldn't book anything for you, if he can't even pack a bloody suitcase or check a hotel room, how would he manage that!

6 am flight is 5:40 to be at the gate, esp if you ae bussing to plane. Check is 2 hours before - 3.40, walk from hotel to check in 10 mins 3:20. I can wake dress and be out in 10 mins so 3:10 for me, but I would allow the extra 10 as I am not really a morning person = 3 am start

43ontherocksporfavor · 27/02/2024 16:59

OP you’ll have two hours to kill at airport so put your makeup on there. Carry it in your hand luggage.

43ontherocksporfavor · 27/02/2024 17:01

Or better still wear none. You’ll be putting your sunnies on at the other end so just put some mascara and lipstick on if you must and go!

This isn't true - insomnia is very real! Some people just can't switch off.

I have had insomnia, I certainly wouldn't sleep at all the night before a flight. You get used to being tired.

Funkyslippers · 27/02/2024 17:17

Iwantmyoldnameback I don't think it is. I would probably say the same thing as the OP. I always avoid v early morning anythings as I know I wouldn't sleep the night before. And if I didn't there's a very real chance I would faint. Last year I couldn't sleep the night before an afternoon flight! And I felt really awful all the next day. Like I was about to pass out. I drank loads of coffee throughout the day just to stop me slumping.

I can't believe you'd think she was boasting about her present

I really don’t if I can avoid it!

I agree about the possibility of the stealth boast.
