Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

@RobinHood19 I guess this is where I differ from MN. I travel (internationally) so much for work and personal life, and often on early AM or red-eye flights, that I'd rather not spend my holiday likewise sleep-deprived.

Especially not on 6 hours – like I said, I need 7 hours at the bare minimum. We're all different. I could happily skip entire meals and have my first bit of food of the day in the evening (no snacks before that even), but if others can't, I don't find that offensive. I think the whole being competitive about necessary bodily functions thing is very weird. Have an imaginary medal and a sticker, people of Mumsnet. I'll have my lovely lie-in.

Can we be friends? Lol.

You'll manage lol

Whatever you do, make sure you've broken in those diamond shoes before your teeny walk to checkin.

Who the hell wears make up on a flight?

@Vitriolinsanity

i do! Why wouldn’t someone wear makeup on a flight? It’s hardly unusual.

Oh stop being so nasty to him, he's booked a lovely holiday as a valentines present, loads of women on here that their partners didn't even get them a card.

And you're saying "if you can trust him" well we can't trust you can we, one of the questions is "have you packed the cases", the answer would be .....no!

Good job we're not relying on you!

Let's hope he's got more sense!

I wonder how many women can actually say they trust their menfolk to pack suitcases, and make sure that everything is cleared from the hotel room? You are a lucky woman if you have one of them.
Not sure why you are being so nasty to me. I AM the one who always makes sure everything is sorted and packed. And if her OH is checking in, then why would he not answer Yes?
My DH would actually know better than to book a 3 am start for me - but what is wrong with suggesting sending him on ahead, if she is worried?

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 27/02/2024 00:13

I love early morning flights, you get there nice and early then snooze around the pool/on the beach.
I never go to bed the night before a holiday anyway.

OnGoldenPond · 27/02/2024 01:17

I'd be more annoyed that he booked Ryanair than the 6am flight. Hate them with a passion. Might just about forgive him if they were the only airline flying the route.

puzzledout · 27/02/2024 02:17

@ftp I can "trust" my DH, I married a man not a child!

Dr one let MN make you think AMALT, can you imagine how you'd slaughtered for daring to come on to say my DH booked a wonderful trip to Gran Canaria, I just love him for it!

No, they must give an opening so others like you can tell her not to trust him with cases etc.

I'm not lucky at all, it really is actually quite normal to be able to rely on your SH for running the mill things.

Sorry you chose to get with a fool.

puzzledout · 27/02/2024 02:19

@ftp and as 100 people have pointed out, a 3am start is not necessary! It's just OP being awkward!

I'm sure your DH wouldn't book anything for you, if he can't even pack a bloody suitcase or check a hotel room, how would he manage that!

restingbitchface30 · 26/02/2024 19:55

Your partner booked you a week away and you’re complaining about having to get up early?! Sometimes I read posts on here and wonder what planet I’m on

😆😆This along with your username restores my faith in humanity!

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 27/02/2024 03:55

Early Flights are the best. We had a 7am Flight last from Manchester and that's a 3 hour drive for us. I can't see the point in wasting half a day sat at home waiting for an afternoon/night Flight and losing a full day of a holiday. When you could be on the beach or by the pool by dinner time. I mean we have the latest Flight back out of CGH Airport in April but that's only so we get a proper full last day in DLP. Don't bother with makeup. No one at all in Newcastle Airport, on the Plane or in Gran Canaria Airport is going to give a shit about whether or not you've dolled yourself up for the Flight! And definitely don't waste half an hour putting on make up if you're that worried about not having enough time to get a massively overpriced meal deal from the Airport.

skygradient · 27/02/2024 05:26

@RobinHood19 the fact that you said "put on a brave face" says it all... Who wants to put on a brave face on their holiday? 😅

If my DH bought me an ugly hour flight I'd be secretly a bit annoyed too (keyword: secretly). She posted a question/short whinge on MN. I don't think she's out there stomping and sulking to the gift giver as people so oddly assume.

Havinganamechange · 27/02/2024 06:14

Yeah I would hate that too OP. I always go for afternoon flights where I can.

@getionnn you will be fine. It’s exciting getting up in the night to go on holiday. Have a shower and it will wake you up, get a coffee, or a pint (if you’re like me!) and enjoy! You will be able to have a few hours sleep on the flight. X

superplumb · 27/02/2024 07:21

Are your diamond shoes also too tight? Jokes aside, you'll be fine. Don't need to get up so early, 4 should be fine. Just get everything ready and have an early night. Better to get there early I'd say.

SamW98 · 27/02/2024 07:26

2.30 and you’re in an airport hotel??

I had a 7am flight last year. We airport just before 5.

Personally I’d have another hour in bed, a very quick shower and do my face etc in the loos once I’d gone though security.

Marchintospring · 27/02/2024 07:27

@puzzledout Well 4am isn’t much better and that’s cutting it fine.

Comparing it to flights to NZ or Oz that are literally in air for a whole 24 day and then some (so makes no difference when you go) is daft.

However I see flying from Newcastle takes nearly 5 hours which is actually long enough to get a nap in so that’s a bonus.

How do you think the thousands upon thousands of men who travel constantly for business go on?

DH regularly catches flights all over the world. He sorts his own visas, flights and hotels (small company) and he manages to not forget to pack anything or leave anything behind, because he's a grownup.

I work in a similar sort of role myself and don't believe my male colleagues need their wife/mum to take charge of their travel either.

NashvilleQueen · 27/02/2024 07:57

I actively look for morning flights. It's still exciting getting up in the early hours to go to an airport and I've been flying for about 48 years.

Sunnnybunny72 · 27/02/2024 07:57

I could never sleep in airport hotels. Far too hot.
For early flights we stayed at home, went to bed early and got up earlier to compensate for the journey to the airport.
I kind of get you OP. You feel groggy all day even with napping on the plane.
I wouldn't book a flight for this time anymore but as a gift I certainly wouldn't be complaining about it.

NashvilleQueen · 27/02/2024 07:58

Oh and flying through the dawn on a clear morning is so beautiful

NashvilleQueen · 27/02/2024 08:00

Also I've found earlier the short haul flight the less likely it is to be delayed as the plane is usually there.

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 27/02/2024 08:01

The only thing that would put me off OP is the ‘we’re flying Ryanair’ you'd have to pay ME to fly with that shitshow.

otherwise, get over it, it’s one morning I’m sure you’ll survive.

BIossomtoes · 27/02/2024 09:03

My last Ryanair flight wasn’t discernibly different to any other flight. People are such snobs about this. I suppose you always turn left @Youcannotbeseriousreally?

3luckystars · 27/02/2024 09:10

I’m really not understanding this Ryanair hatred at all. What’s the problem? Had you a bad experience with them?
In my opinion, they brought costs down for all other flights, their planes are brand new and they are very safe.

I remember visiting my sister years ago and a new Lidl had opened up in her town and there was nobody in it, I couldn’t figure it out either? She said nobody would be caught dead in there, but eventually they all came around. I just couldn’t understand it, I love a bargain!

LuckySantangelo35 · 27/02/2024 09:19

Such snobby comments re Ryanair.

what’s so bad about it?!

it’s travel, it’s a means to an end! It doesn’t have to be amazing
