Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

I do understand the wanting to put makeup on before leaving for the airport though cos then it’s done for the day and most of my makeup goes in my suitcase.

Slitherr · 26/02/2024 13:41

I hate early flights and will almost always stay for 8 nights or more to ensure I don’t miss out on the days rather than get up early. I don’t sleep well so when I have to be up at 3/4 am, I don’t sleep at all so am knackered by the time I get there. I always find airports too busy too at that time.

I flew later once (around 7.30pm which is much later the usual) and I was the only one checking in and only one at security. I prefer that to be honest.

jolies1 · 26/02/2024 13:58

I think it’s ok to have a preference for a later or earlier flight… sometimes the reality is you don’t get to pick (esp for long haul) and just need to suck it up and get on with it. It might be a pain but one day of tiredness surely isn’t ‘holiday-ruining’ - have a nap when you arrive or on day one have an early night. Last year had an early start and 15 hours of travelling - when we arrived all we did was eat dinner and crash out but after a full sleep and breakfast were up and ready to go for the rest of our hols. Agree with PP I’d rather an earlier flight with less risk of delay, last time I got an evening flight it was delayed 3 hrs and didn’t arrive at our destination till after 1am!

Sunandsea26 · 26/02/2024 15:12

Assuming you don’t have kids and aren’t used to broken sleep! It really isn’t a big deal as a one off. We flew at 7am with 2 of us and 2 kids the other day. Our flight was moved so we had no choice. We have 6.10am next time. Even the kids lasted til 8.30pm after getting up at 4am. adrenaline gets you through and you’ll just be able to lay by the pool and snooze on the plane! Have a nap when you get there and an early night, done! Much much better than arriving late!!

TheBerry · 26/02/2024 15:22

You’re going to be tired for one day. It’s not a big deal. Sleep on the plane if you can, and then get an early night once you arrive.

Then you can enjoy the rest of your holiday!

I think you’re going to regret it if you end up not going just because you don’t want to feel tired for a few hours.

Feel excited, see it as an adventure, and don’t be grumpy with your DP!

Malarandras · 26/02/2024 15:26

So I have kids and I still won’t do this. Just because I can push through being exhausted doesn’t mean I want to. You are allowed to feel how you feel. You don’t need strangers on the internet to validate your feelings, or invalidate them either.

SamW98 · 26/02/2024 15:30

I love the early morning flights and always book them. I see it as a bonus day being round the pool in time for lunch.

A quick nap before dinner and you’ll be fine

Janus · 26/02/2024 15:32

Ryanair usually don’t have anyone on their desk until exactly 2 hours before check in (we fly a lot with them). So if you are checking in a suitcase you probably won’t be able to do anything before 4am.
Honestly the excitement about going on holiday will get you through, try and go to bed a bit early? I am hopeless getting up in the morning but for a holiday I jump out of bed!!

Stormyweathr · 26/02/2024 15:40

Love this flight time you get there nice and early and sleep on a sun lounger with a cocktail next to you

Carodebalo · 26/02/2024 15:40

YANBU. I really don't like early flights. I'm a bad sleeper at the best of times, so no, this flight hour would not make me very happy. Having said that, the holiday itself would make me happy (how nice of your OH!) and I am sure you will have a lovely time once you get there. I hope you'll have a great time!

Faith77 · 26/02/2024 15:47

I haven't left the country for almost 7 years, thanks to experiencing domestic abuse. If you REALLY don't want to go, I am more than happy to take your place!

Heb1996 · 26/02/2024 16:38

@getionnn I know exactly what you mean. We’ve done the same early flights to Menorca for years and they’ve really taken their toll. So fed up doing them and feeling like crap all day afterwards! The only saving grace is that having a siesta in the afternoon after such an early start is delicious!! But I’ve had enough of them. When you’re not an early bird they are a real struggle. I find it impossible to even eat during the flight because I feel so tired that I’m nauseous which is awful. Yes, we do get to the villa early and in the pool by lunchtime but I’d still rather get a flight at a decent time and feel halfway human. I feel for you I really do!! If you can’t get a later flight, could you try it and see if it’s as bad as you fear? Then compromise for the following year by taking a later flight with a different destination?

User3456 · 26/02/2024 16:58

Wear a decent mask on the plane if you don't like feeling tired - long covid will knock you for 6 if you're unlucky enough to get it. Planes and airports are quite high risk for infection.
Hope you stay well and have a good time.

FamBae · 26/02/2024 17:25

Your not being unreasonable for feeling that way, we all have our preferences, but you will be unreasonable if you bitch to OH and not make the best of it.

sheeplikessleep · 26/02/2024 17:36

I prefer early morning flights. Too excited to sleep anyway and Adrenalin and excitement see me through the first day!
Have a nap and shower when you arrive or just jump in the pool. That will wake you up! Lovely surprise.

NannaKaren · 26/02/2024 17:47

Lol

you are lucky ! Enjoy the holiday x

I would do it! Adrenaline and excitement will be going you’ll probably not get much sleep that night anyway. Recently flew out around the same time with a toddler we were wide awake at the airport from 4am and it was fine

Xmasdaft2023 · 26/02/2024 17:48

Best time to get a flight imo. Means you still have most of the day when you get there 😁
we’ve done it the last 2years with kids in tow and absolutely fine. Nap on the plane, early night the first night of arrival ☺️

joles12 · 26/02/2024 17:49

getionnn · 25/02/2024 12:34

It says on my boarding pass arrive 3 hours before for international flight 💁‍♀️

Seriously - who does that?! Get up at 4 - throw some clothes on and be at the airport for 4.20 - still well over an hour before they will hoard - you said it’s a small airport so really can’t be huge queues.

sarahd29 · 26/02/2024 17:59

Usually you can check in the night before for 6am
flights. If you do that, you can just go straight through security to your gate with your hand luggage. You won’t need to do the 3 hour before check in, look up twilight check in.

I love 6am flights, exciting going on hols and it doesn’t sound like a long flight. I’ve just come back from Cancun and it was a night flight back which was awful. No sleep etc and jet lag. There’s no good time, but no point hanging round waiting if you don’t have to.

Devongirl23 · 26/02/2024 18:07

I purposely book the 6am flight, easy quiet roads to airport, nap on plane, chill by the pool in afternoon, dinner then early night 😂

Twentyfirstcenturymumma · 26/02/2024 18:29

Wow... looking a gift horse in the mouth. Cheer up, enjoy your holiday, or suggest your dh goes with someone else perhaps, a friend, parent, sibling... whatever 🤷‍♀️

lemming40 · 26/02/2024 18:53

It's one early morning, get over it.
Just go to sleep a bit earlier the night before.

croydon15 · 26/02/2024 19:05

I don't do early flight either,.if a holiday flight is before 10.30/11.00 l won't book it. Also some hotels won't let you check in before a certain time so it's pointless getting there and wait around until you can access your room.
