Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

I would not be keen on a very early flight, but sometimes needs must. I find it difficult to believe the question is about a genuine situation and not some weird attention seeking thing! If it’s real, of course YABU. Your husband has given you a lovely, caring Valentines Day gift. Don’t throw it back in his face 🙄

weepat · 26/02/2024 19:19

A little unreasonable .
I have flight at 6.15am in 2 weeks.
I intend getting up at 3.30 quick shower. Away by 3.45. 30 minute drive to airport. Car parking booked & will be at check in for 4..30am.
Plenty time to spare.

Rachand23 · 26/02/2024 19:25

These flights to Canaries are normally early - they do the return journey so when you come home it’s late afternoon- just don’t see your problem- perhaps stay in the UK and holiday here.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 26/02/2024 19:32

Up and off, just beast it. Push to the airport, rag through bag drop and security then a lovely boozy breakfast drink and back to sleep on the jet. Wake up refreshed in paradise and chillax. Gonna be fine bestie.

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 26/02/2024 19:38

You're being just a touch precious. What sort of madman gets up at 230 for a 6am flight when the terminal is a 2 minute walk away? That's fully two hours before you need to be there.

If it's such an issue, then stay up all night and sleep on the flight.

Thirtyandflailing · 26/02/2024 19:39

I feel your pain, i struggle to get up at 8am! But we went Rhodes in August last year and the flight was at 6am. We went bed at 10pm (kids went bed earlier) got up at 4am and was at the airport which is 15 mins away at about 4.40am and it was fine. Don’t know why you’d get up at 2.30

Jcf1977 · 26/02/2024 19:45

A bit OTT with the dread I think. Just reframe it as a 6 day holiday and whatever you get from your first day is a bonus (napping by the pool an early dinner and bed sounds like a nice bonus to me) if you don’t put a positive spin on what is a lovely gesture by your OH, you will end up ruining the holiday. A 3pm flight with a potentially couple of hours delay means a full day of travel and missing an evening out. That really is a 6 day holiday.

@RobinHood19 I guess this is where I differ from MN. I travel (internationally) so much for work and personal life, and often on early AM or red-eye flights, that I'd rather not spend my holiday likewise sleep-deprived.

Especially not on 6 hours – like I said, I need 7 hours at the bare minimum. We're all different. I could happily skip entire meals and have my first bit of food of the day in the evening (no snacks before that even), but if others can't, I don't find that offensive. I think the whole being competitive about necessary bodily functions thing is very weird. Have an imaginary medal and a sticker, people of Mumsnet. I'll have my lovely lie-in.

Edited

So. True.

Your partner booked you a week away and you’re complaining about having to get up early?! Sometimes I read posts on here and wonder what planet I’m on

43ontherocksporfavor · 26/02/2024 20:04

OP I just flew from Spain and check in didn’t open until 1 3/4 hrs before take off( easyJet) . We are only ever there 2 hrs before. You can get up at 3.30, walk over to terminal by 4. Have breakfast there.
It’s a 4 hr flight so you can rest and / or sleep then. Even if you don’t you are going to be relaxing on that type of holiday so no big deal. You’ll sleep well the first night, no harm done.

BooBooDoodle · 26/02/2024 20:04

Earlier flight means more time at the other end and having time for a look around and getting bearings rather than arriving at an evening time. Just sleep on the bloody plane. I’d be grateful of the opportunity alone. My DH has chronic migraine and cluster headaches, one of his triggers is lack of sleep (he needs 7+ a night) and he’s managed flights at all times and with our two kids. He’s been floored many a time but just gotten on with it.

Get a grip

ftp · 26/02/2024 20:15

You could always send HIM to book you in and put the luggage in (if you can trust him to manage?) and have an extra hour in bed.

Oh stop being so nasty to him, he's booked a lovely holiday as a valentines present, loads of women on here that their partners didn't even get them a card.

And you're saying "if you can trust him" well we can't trust you can we, one of the questions is "have you packed the cases", the answer would be .....no!

Good job we're not relying on you!

Let's hope he's got more sense!

Meagainnewname · 26/02/2024 20:31

We’ve got afternoon flight and arrive at hotel around midnight, how horrible, first day of our holiday wasted!
give me a 6am flight any day!

Fluffmum · 26/02/2024 20:35

Get up at 345

Evanted76 · 26/02/2024 21:01

Filled with dread about a 6am short haul flight?? In the nicest possible way, get a grip!

We emigrated to NZ and I did NZ to the UK which was 36 hours door to door with a toddler and a 7 year old on my own. Transiting through about 6 airports/countries at all hours of the day/night. When we arrived I didn't know what day/month year it was. But many people do this.

Why on earth are you filled with dread at getting up early when you have been gifted a lovely holiday for Valentines? Not to mention have a second holiday abroad to look forward to later in the year? Lots of people would give their right arm to be in your position.

I'm beginning to think this thread is a wind up.

SpiritOfEcstasy · 26/02/2024 21:01

I always book into the fancy lounge for those kind of ugly o’clock flights. I am at Stansted as I type for a 7am tomorrow flight in the morning. The nice breakfast and chilled out space make it so much more bearable for the sake of £35.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 26/02/2024 21:22

All the people saying they wouldn't do an early morning flight obviously have never flown transatlantic or a package holiday.

Lollipop81 · 26/02/2024 21:23

You are not been unreasonable. I’ve booked a holiday in May with the same flight time and I’ll be on my own with 2 small children and I am thinking what have I done I will be shattered. I keep hoping to get an email to say the flight has been delayed by 2 hours 😂😂

fleurneige · 26/02/2024 21:28

WOW, how old are you? Are you ill or severely disabled?

Honestly! If you had a long journey to the airport, I might get it- but sleeping at airport means you have to be at terminal at 4ish- and time to have breakfast. And then have a whole day at location to rest and relax.

pollymere · 26/02/2024 21:28

I used to get 6am flights and definitely wasn't up that early - and I live an hour from the airport.

Most morning flights are much kinder with regards to timings. If you check-in online, you can check with the airline but often you'll only need to be at the airport as little as half an hour before. If you are ready to go the night before that could see you sleeping until 5am.

AnnOtherLife · 26/02/2024 21:46

I stress about being tired & getting up early but not 7 weeks ahead of time! Just wear big shades, no one is expected to look amazing at 6 am

Mumof3confused · 26/02/2024 22:01

Get to bed early, roll out of bed at 4am and onto the transfer bus. Nap/have breakfast on the plane and take a Power Nap when you get to the hotel before hitting the beach or going out to eat. Sounds like bliss.

Do you have to check in luggage? It will be easier for you to travel light and scrap that bit of additional hassle on the way out.

Vitriolinsanity · 26/02/2024 23:05

Whatever you do, make sure you've broken in those diamond shoes before your teeny walk to checkin.

Who the hell wears make up on a flight?
