Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

The only thing that would put me off OP is the ‘we’re flying Ryanair’ you'd have to pay ME to fly with that shitshow.

otherwise, get over it, it’s one morning I’m sure you’ll survive.

@Youcannotbeseriousreally

why would you need to be paid to fly Ryanair?!

Because it’s gross, he’s a total wanker and it’s also never actually cheap. I hate how basic it is and how you’re treated like cattle. It’s a firm no from me.

My last Ryanair flight wasn’t discernibly different to any other flight. People are such snobs about this. I suppose you always turn left @Youcannotbeseriousreally?

Of course. Why wouldn’t you.

shreknjumps · 27/02/2024 09:27

"Because it’s gross, he’s a total wanker and it’s also never actually cheap. I hate how basic it is and how you’re treated like cattle. It’s a firm no from me."

The only thing you've got right here really is that there's a wanker involved. Of course it's fucking cheap 🤣

"Treated like cattle" aka its exactly the same as the majority of short haul flights. Get on, sit in allocated seat, put bags where told to, get off.

shreknjumps · 27/02/2024 09:28

@Youcannotbeseriousreally thinks Ryanair flights are "never cheap". Mate, she's never turning left if that's expensive 🤣

You add lugagge and boarding and all the other shit you might as well fly BA and have a much nicer experience. He once was going to charge for going to the toilet 🤣

Those charges are optional. I don’t pay them. BA’s no better, they don’t even give you a cup of tea now.

They do if you fly from city!

MuminMama · 27/02/2024 09:32

Only you know yourself and how that will affect you. I did it once and would not again. But it sounds like it’s booked already so what can you do?

shreknjumps · 27/02/2024 09:33

"I always book into the fancy lounge for those kind of ugly o’clock flights."

The lounge at Newcastle doesn't open until 75 minutes after the OP plans to get there. Much like the Ryanair bag drop 🤣

shreknjumps · 27/02/2024 09:36

You're flying BA and slagging off Ryanair? You don't sound very clued up really. Hardly Cathay Pacific is it? Confused

I'd never choose BA given the choice because of their unreliable record. One of your reasons is there's a wanker involved? Yet you can ignore how BA have treated their staff all for a cup of tea. Yeah, no thanks.

@Youcannotbeseriousreally

it doesn’t need to be anything more than basic though

you get on, sit down, get off after a couple of hours when the plan gets there

what more do you really need?

oh and you’re wrong it is cheaper than a lot of airlines

It’s clearly a long time since you flew with them. They stopped free refreshments years ago.

LadyWhistledownAteMyHamster · 27/02/2024 09:44

We once booked a 6am flight for a holiday - we were going with relatives who booked a flight for later on that same day, and who were pretty joyful as they didn't have such an early get up.

Our flight took off on time and we had a lovely day chilling and snoozing by the pool, waiting for everyone to join us.

Unfortunately it was the first day of a major airport support worker strike in the country we were visiting. Our flight was the last flight allowed into the country, my relatives spent 12 hours sat in the airport and on the plane waiting for takeoff. They eventually arrived the following day but had a terrible start to their holiday. On that occasion, the early bird caught the worm...

RobinHood19 · 27/02/2024 09:47

BA usually involves flying out or into / transferring through LHR. Good luck with that if you actually need to get to your destination on time…

I just checked and over the past 5 years I’ve flown Ryanair 45 times. Not once have I had an issue, weather delays and airport strikes aside. If you read their website top to bottom and left to right, as my dad used to say, you can’t miss their rules (which btw, are the same as 90% of low-cost airlines nowadays). Costs aren’t hidden, they’re right there.

I’ve also flown BA almost as much, couldn’t say the same for them. Long-haul they mostly come through, but short-haul they’re a mess. And when you’re going somewhere for 48/72h, you kind of need your flights to be on time and your bags to make it there with you.

notimagain · 27/02/2024 09:47

Not really sure why the Ryanair spat started, TBH the reason many people fly with them because it's the only airline that serves the route they want or need to fly on...they are certainly not always cheaper than BA or Easyjet.

That said Ryanair might be the only option for Newcastle- Gran Canaria non-stop...

As for "turning left"...brings back memories but it's increasingly rare for passengers to be able to exercise that option these days, even if well loaded.

BIossomtoes · 27/02/2024 09:41

If operating as CityFlyer they still serve a drink and snack as of 2023. Unless something changed on 01/01/2024, PP is correct (as most LCY flights are operated as BA CityFlyer).

shreknjumps · 27/02/2024 09:51

"they are certainly not always cheaper than BA or Easyjet."

I'd bet at least 9 times out of 10 they are if you book as soon as flights are released. I check flight prices every time they're released for bargains and I try not to fly either BA or EasyJet due to their unreliable service.

Short haul you can't beat jet2 or Ryanair.

BA certainly brought free drinks back on a small number of mainline short haul/mid haul routes last summer.

Not sure of the current situation.

I flew with BA twice this week - got water and a snack on the way out, and a glass of wine and some crisps on the way back.

Agreed! Flew BA on last flight, no real difference!

kcchiefette · 27/02/2024 09:55

YABU. You sound like a right grumpy cow to be honest.

The earlier the flight for me, the better. It means I have more time in the resort (especially if its a short stay).

I have had plenty of 6am flights. I go to sleep early (around 9pm) and get in a few hours sleep before a wake up of 2:30am as I live 20 mins from airport and like to grab something to eat and a coffee before leaving the house.

Yes, I am usually tired at the airport, but then I usually get a few hours sleep on the plane then the first night of the holiday, I usually go to sleep earlier (say between 9pm-10pm)

Depending on your airport, it may have been the only choice for departure. It was a nice gesture especially for Valentines.

Count yourself lucky that you have a partner who spoils you and suck it up.

MadKittenWoman · 27/02/2024 10:25

We always book the earliest flight there and the latest one back so that we get, in effect, an extra day. I hate getting up early but I’d rather arrive in the morning or by lunchtime at the latest so I can unpack, relax or explore then head out for the evening. On the last day we check out, store our bags then have a last day out and do some last-minute shopping or just lounge by the pool before going to the airport in the late afternoon or evening.

@puzzledout Well 4am isn’t much better and that’s cutting it fine.

Comparing it to flights to NZ or Oz that are literally in air for a whole 24 day and then some (so makes no difference when you go) is daft.

However I see flying from Newcastle takes nearly 5 hours which is actually long enough to get a nap in so that’s a bonus.

Of course it doesn't make a difference when you go on a long haul flight, but on a short haul flight, you can easily catch up on sleep once you have arrived. In the OP's case 5 hours later.

She may not even need to catch up on much sleep if she goes to bed super early the night before.
