Do you like watching other people having sex (on TV)?

I don't. Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but if I'm watching a movie or drama and the characters start having sex then, unless it's a key part of the plot (e.g.dialogue taking place during the action), I hit fast-forward and skip to the post-coital scene. I'm not a prude - I just find it uncomfortable/intrusive to watch other people having sex. Intimate scenes have their place in movies/dramas with an obviously sensual theme - each to their own. But if it's a movie/drama of any other genre, and the sex scene doesn't advance the plot in any way, why linger on it? Just me?

I'm with you OP. I mentioned to someone that the start of GOT was silly in terms of sex and they found me genuinely weird, that it would put me off. Still haven't watched it. I also found the 4th wall breaking anal sex chat at the start of Fleabag completely eyerolly. I didn't get much further with that either. I can't think of a time where it's added anything to the thing I'm watching, but to put it right at the start before I'm even invested is just daft. I don't have much time to sit and watch stuff (and it's hard for me to just sit and watch stuff, I have to get something in my hands to do) so I'm not going to waste it on that.

It took me about 5 goes to get into GOT because of the gratuitous sex scenes. It does actually get better in the later seasons. I ended up loving it for the storylines and characters despite the stupid sex scenes.

I wish there was a data program that could correlate the “prude and proud”, or “I’m older now and can’t stand this stuff” comments…

.. with the rate of divorce, and self-imposed celibacy afterwards from people who prioritise Toblerone and cats

Fionaville · 24/02/2024 15:44

I loved Bridgerton, Orange is the new black and Game of thrones, the latter being porn like at times. Way too much sex and nudity.
I'm torn because I quite like some of it, but then I wish there wasn't any sex scenes because some programmes I'd let my teens watch with me.

TomeTome · 24/02/2024 15:47

The endless sex in GOT was such a shame because it was a cracking story. On the whole I skip them all I think it adds nothing and I wouldn’t want to act it or have anyone I loved have to. I think if they offered a filtered option most people would opt for it and they’d realise nobody was that into watching it.

Are you correlating lack of interest in sex on TV with lack of sex drive, or am I misunderstanding your post?

Nobody's bothered because there's no correlation

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 24/02/2024 15:51

I don’t have a cat and don’t like toblerone (too sweet and sickly) but do have a loving relationship, so I guess that’s going to upset the pp’s theory.

SanFranBear · 24/02/2024 15:52

I genuinely love a sex scene... not sure what it says about me but I'd be disappointed if they always cut from some kissing to post-coital!

TomeTome · 24/02/2024 15:53

@JacquesHarlow so you think not being interested in sex on tv means you aren’t interested in sex in RL? Why?

WiddlinDiddlin · 24/02/2024 16:01

It very much depends.

If its just for the sake of some nudity and ooh err missus, not really.

If it significantly adds to the plot though..then yes of course.

Shakespeareandi · 24/02/2024 16:10

Yep, totally unnecessary. Similarly to I wouldn't want to watch people enjoying a meal without any conversation or moving the story forward. It would go like this whilst eating: "yum yum... mmm.." Crunch crunch.. Chew chew.. "mmm tasty". Would be just as boring. Also, many actors have said how uncomfortable they feel acting out sex scenes. So no, I don't enjoy them and think they are unnecessary. If people want to watch other people have sex there are plenty of movies for that :)

Yeah exactly. Like we all know what sex is, unless it's something in the plot that something happens during sex that is relevant whats the point in having to sit and watch a sex scene? It brings nothing. The same as I don't need to watch them go to the toilet or whatever, it adds nothing, we as the viewer can assume sex is happening if it's implied, I don't need to see constant nudity and ridiculous over the top shagging during every film or series I try to watch.

SaveMeTheLabelOfThatPerfumeOnTheTable · 24/02/2024 16:35

It brings nothing.

Men like to see tits? It beings something to them.

Such a good story and visually fantastic. So many unnecessary sex scenes though. I think it would be a brilliant idea if they put a sex filter on there. There are so many films and shows that I know my teens would love, if this was possible.

TammyOne · 24/02/2024 16:41

I don’t feel like there are that many graphic sex scenes in films and tv anymore- at least not ones with nudity? I can’t remember the last time I saw a breast or a bum!
I really like good sex scenes done well- whether it’s comical, emotional, erotic, whatever.
What astonishes me really is that sex is such a rich seam for portraying human experience and yet all the sex I ever see on to seems to be completely unimaginative, bland and totally unsexy. It goes: snog ( usually for the first time) pull each others clothes off a bit ( leaving bra on) stick it in. 🙄

Those sorts of scenes make up something like 2% of the screen time. It's a great drama, very enjoyable watch

thank you,
i have been watching it this afternoon, i misjudged it,

Well I can't think of any other reason for gratuitous boob nudity, full frontal female nudity and sex where only the woman is visible.

Quite often, male nudity is obscured and I rarely see a naked man just for the hell of it in a film.

Why do you think that is?

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 24/02/2024 17:35

Generally I don't like it. It's written into everything now, almost always unnecessary and it puts me off. I try to avoid 18 ratings as a result. Occasionally it's well-done and i dont mind it. I liked the Brigerton scenes, but then was such a ridiculous show it was fitting. Normal people was one where I actually thought it was part of the plot, and done very well. The awkward scene in the bedroom on the hot day was difficult to watch it was so cringe inducing but also that was the whole point, and acted so well. I squirmed throughout.

Anyone notice the majority of sex scenes now are man behind the woman? That's definitely a new thing I'd say only last 10 years or so. I watch a lot of Netflix and that's where I've noticed it most.

Comparing someone using the toilet to two people having sex on screen is insane 😂

You could write one or are you too busy whipping your pants off and having passionate sex?
Well done on your contribution to this thread, it added absolutely nothing to the conversation while managing to put down other women, be obnoxiously self-congratulatory and just made you look a bit of a tit really.

Loubelle70 · 24/02/2024 17:39

It depends what its about...i watched poor things and i liked the sex in that...but other day was watching generic film and within 5 minutes...woman was naked twice...lost interest then, had nothing to do with anything...just to keep men interested imho.

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 24/02/2024 17:40

Crumpetdisappointment · 24/02/2024 07:42

no, have avoided Normal People even though it has a good write up.

The sex scenes absolutely evolved the characters and plot in Normal People though?

The weird thing about @JacquesHarlow s hypothesis is that I’ve always thought exactly the opposite. I assumed the people who wanted to watch actors having pretend sex were not getting satisfaction in RL.
