Do you like watching other people having sex (on TV)?

I don't. Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but if I'm watching a movie or drama and the characters start having sex then, unless it's a key part of the plot (e.g.dialogue taking place during the action), I hit fast-forward and skip to the post-coital scene. I'm not a prude - I just find it uncomfortable/intrusive to watch other people having sex. Intimate scenes have their place in movies/dramas with an obviously sensual theme - each to their own. But if it's a movie/drama of any other genre, and the sex scene doesn't advance the plot in any way, why linger on it? Just me?

@Shiningout yes, exactly!

I ruin it for my DH too as I can’t help a running commentary of “of course the uncarpeted stairs, perfect, looks great fun, we should do that”, “sex against a wall, why do we even need beds”.

Maybe my private’s are not quite in the right place but I honestly don’t think I could do the against the wall thing, I would need lifting up and possibly tilting 😂. DH is strong but there are limits.

Well exactly. DH and I tried this back in the distant days when I was a teeny tiny 8 stone and he was a strapping rugby player. He managed to pull a muscle in his back and I'm pretty sure the awkward angle gave me cystitis. Don't recommend.

No, I don't enjoy watching sex scenes. I prefer when it cuts from the characters snogging, to waking up together the next morning.

On a slightly different note, I notice that more and more sex scenes feature the woman being choked by her male partner (Beef, The Flight Attendant being two that I have watched recently). I particularly dislike this normalisation of a dangerous practice.

DonnaBanana · 24/02/2024 12:02

I skip them as well. They are always so weirdly normative, a man in missionary etc etc. Why don’t you get things that are less stereotypical but actually more common in normal relationships like boob play or facials

TubeScreamer · 24/02/2024 12:07

No

Julianne65 · 24/02/2024 12:17

No, I don’t like them much. I do enjoy watching Henry Cavill in various states of undress though.

Blueskies3 · 24/02/2024 12:19

I hate sex scenes in movies or tv shows. Do not get the point, unless it is to excite men! Which then annoys me. I wish there were more movies that didn't have it in it. I can get the drift with a long kissing scene....

DustyLee123 · 24/02/2024 07:55

I know that they aren’t having sex, so I don’t see the point. I skip it.

But they are acting throughout the film.

JKBH2728 · 24/02/2024 12:25

I did quite like the pissed Jodie Foster character trying to look sexy taking off her socks in true detective though. Made our household chuckle. I fast forwarded the actual (pointless) sex scenes in the series though.

OriginalUsername2 · 24/02/2024 12:28

I do the same! It’s just boring.

fatphalange · 24/02/2024 12:28

No, I don't like it and there's never been a show where it was 'needed' or added context despite what the directors/actors always say. Will put often put me off watching. I just roll my eyes and think 'whyyyy?'

MidnightMeltdown · 24/02/2024 12:32

Not especially but it doesn't bother me.

I think in some cases it would ruin the atmosphere if they just put something suggestive in (like a bedroom door closing!).

Sedgwick · 24/02/2024 12:41

@Bookist that’s interesting, glad it’s not just me, also not surprised regarding the cystitis, I suspected this might be the case.

Phoebefail · 24/02/2024 12:43

@baileybrosbuildingandloan " Agatha Christie adaptations- she never needed to write sex scenes but they always seem to add them in!"
Sometimes they add Miss Marple in as well.
I'm off or I will rant about the story with the snow on Dartmoor.

Phoebefail · 24/02/2024 12:51

Anyone remember Apple Tree Yard? Did they have their first shag standing before they knew each others names? good taste? 😃
Afterwards she had one leg out of her tights, and he found a chair for her.

Itsverydifficult · 24/02/2024 13:00

No, I’m with you op. I don’t enjoy them and find them cringey and unecessary. Certain steaming platforms seem to always put gratuitous sex scenes in (Netflix I am looking at you!) I often wonder how many people actually enjoy them and why they feel the need to put graphic sex scenes in when it can be easily implied and it adds nothing to the story.

Caterguin · 24/02/2024 13:02

We've recently watched all the Black mirror series with teen ds.

He got sick of the sex scenes in so many of the episodes. I can take or leave it. We watched episode 1 of the way last night. Ds was shocked at them having sex outside (he's not an old or experienced teen), but I was more concerned at the lack of condom. Especially given the surge in stis. Maybe that should be a pre requisite of modern sex scenes, especially when it's strangers.

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 24/02/2024 13:04

I quite like a sex scene, but some of them are very unrealistic.

Crumpetdisappointment · 24/02/2024 13:04

i watched i am not ok with this
teens having sex, not shown at all
but i was surprised that they so easily had sex without being in a relationship or knowing each other, and it was both their first time!

LunaNorth · 24/02/2024 13:09

I like Alan Partridge’s sex scene.

“Do you mind if I talk? It helps me keep the wolf from the door, so to speak. Jill, what do you think of the pedestrianization of Norwich city centre? I'll be honest, I'm dead against it. I mean, people forget that traders need access to DIXONS! They do say it'll help people in wheeeelchairs.”

The best sex scene ever 😁

trekking1 · 24/02/2024 13:15

No, they usually don't add anything to the plot and I feel like the women are being exploited, they always have their tits out while the man is fully clothed

ClutchingOurBananas · 24/02/2024 13:15

I’m not a fan.

Even worse though is sex scenes in books. Invariably absolutely awful.

Bobbytazer · 24/02/2024 13:23

Nah, as a young woman even when I'm by myself they make me cringe. I am slightly old fashioned in my views sometimes but if they don't add anything to the plot, what's the point? They dont do anything for me, sexually or otherwise, and I always skip. If I wanted to watch a new show but there was loads of rampant sex in it, I probably wouldn't bother.

ijustneedtokeepbreathing · 24/02/2024 13:30

Depends if it's done well etc. Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal in All of Us Strangers - amazing scenes that really captured the chemistry and intimacy.

ChooseYourOwnHistory · 24/02/2024 13:36

Nothing can be as awful to watch than Richard Armitage having a wank on the bed his son and his gf had been in because Richard was obsessed with the gf .
