Do you like watching other people having sex (on TV)?

I don't. Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but if I'm watching a movie or drama and the characters start having sex then, unless it's a key part of the plot (e.g.dialogue taking place during the action), I hit fast-forward and skip to the post-coital scene. I'm not a prude - I just find it uncomfortable/intrusive to watch other people having sex. Intimate scenes have their place in movies/dramas with an obviously sensual theme - each to their own. But if it's a movie/drama of any other genre, and the sex scene doesn't advance the plot in any way, why linger on it? Just me?

Prude and proud. We have loads of online pornography now if that’s what floats your boat. But I don’t want to see 5 miniutes of anal in the middle of a period drama, ta very much.

newnamethanks · 24/02/2024 13:49

No, I find them time wasting and irritating in terms of moving the story on and assume they're there for the titillation of the directors. I think I was traumatised by the vision of Ken and Deirdre in Corrie who'd had a middle aged sex scene written into an episode. Seeing them thrashing about half dressed was akin to walking into mum and dad's bedroom at the wrong time. Shudder. No. Shut that door.

But porn is nothing like some of the sex scenes in films or dramas 😏 porn is in my experience mysognistic. Only shows the woman being degraded and used. I loved the sex scenes in peaky blinders with Tommy Shelby and his wife Grace. Showed what real sex is like.
I'm so surprised I'm in the minority here.. maybe you have watched the wrong shows. I found the sex scenes in Normal people true to life.. what it's like in your early days as a teen having sex..
I've rarely watched anything where the woman is being objectified.

newnamethanks · 24/02/2024 13:59

Rarely watched anything where the woman is being objectified you need to pay more attention or did you miss the word 'not' out by mistake?

OhNoWhatIf · 24/02/2024 14:10

@OkPedro I don't mind most sex scenes especially if the man is fit.

No I didn't miss out the word not.. like I said the shows/films I've watched have not been about objectifying women. I wouldn't watch anything like that. Porn is something I'd never watch again because of that

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 24/02/2024 14:13

Since I’ve never looked at porn, I have no idea what it’s like.

Well of course ☺️

There you go then.. porn is a million miles away from the sex scenes in most TV shows and films. That's why I'd never watch porn. I got talked into it by an ex partner. It was just women being degraded.. men having a great time 🙄
Theres a good documentary on C4.. women made a porn film for women, it was very well done

ntmdino · 24/02/2024 14:23

Nope. It's a pointless waste of screen time for the viewer that - usually - would be far better spent on plot or character development.

Of course, the majority of the time, that's exactly the point...sub-par writers will shoe-in lengthy sex scenes when they can't think of anything else to pad the runtime, and they haven't developed the characters enough to be able to imply it.

IncompleteSenten · 24/02/2024 14:27

I don't think I've ever seen a sex scene that added something of any importance to a film.

Also why is kissing always so noisy and slurpy? Who actually kisses like that?

JamSandle · 24/02/2024 14:27

Nope, I turn off or fast forward. Vile.

Crumpetdisappointment · 24/02/2024 07:42

no, have avoided Normal People even though it has a good write up.

The sex scenes are cringey at best. Very forced and lacking anything

Very stereotypical opinion of porn. Believe it or not some woman actually enjoy sex

Creatureofhabit87 · 24/02/2024 14:32

If it’s someone I find attractive of either sex then I don’t mind, but sometimes and yes this is massively judgemental of me, if it’s someone a lot older than me or someone I don’t find attractive, it makes me feel uncomfortable!

IwishIcouldfinishabook · 24/02/2024 14:34

Not TV but the Cillian Murphy/ Florence Pugh sex scene in Oppenheimer was completely pointless. Pugh is barely in it as it is. They cut the scene in India because Pugh was reading the Hindu Holy book naked. It would have made no difference to the film to them, and just minimised the ' I am death..' line for the rest of us.

Huh? The porn you've seen has shown women actually enjoying the sex they are having? Or playing a role? I've never seen porn like that. I mentioned the documentary where a group of women made a porn film for women. And yes I know women enjoy sex.. I am a woman and I enjoy sex. I don't know how you came to the conclusion that I was saying otherwise

Those sorts of scenes make up something like 2% of the screen time. It's a great drama, very enjoyable watch

Slitherr · 24/02/2024 14:42

I don’t mind it. There was a scene in The couple next door that I found really hot but the couple had great chemistry I thought.

Sometines I think it is essential to the plot. The scene in Monsters Ball for example.

Woman2023 · 24/02/2024 14:48

"I mentioned to someone that the start of GOT was silly in terms of sex and they found me genuinely weird, that it would put me off. Still haven't watched it. I also found the 4th wall breaking anal sex chat at the start of Fleabag completely eyerolly. I didn't get much further with that either."

@Grumblevision you appear to be me! Exactly the same reactions. But apparently GoT is all about strong female characters. 🙄

theprincessthepea · 24/02/2024 15:03

I hate that they are so dragged out these days. The last thing I watched with a sex scene was One Day and there was that Bridgerton episode that had a sex scene every 5 minutes. I find that they don’t add to the plot - it only needs to last a few seconds for us to get the point. Weirdly I don’t feel as cringe if a sex scene comes on and I’m watching it with OH - we usually just make a comment. If I’m alone I find it boring and if with family it’s so awkward!!

I don’t see why they don’t just imply they had sex. Like they do on soaps.

SaveMeTheLabelOfThatPerfumeOnTheTable · 24/02/2024 15:25

Lots of women saying - it does nothing to add to the storyline. I don't know why they put it in.

That's because it's purely thee for the sexual titillation of men. Nothing more. Nothing less.

You're not the intended audience and that's why it makes no sense to you

That One Day sex scene was uncomfortably long. It kind of broke the spell that we had to watch them shagging for 5 minutes straight.

DetOliviaBenson · 24/02/2024 15:37

The older I get the more uncomfortable it makes me, especially when the couple are a lot younger than me. Weirdly I can go back and watch films/TV shows I watched when I was younger and have no problem watching the sex scenes. Confused
