Do you like watching other people having sex (on TV)?

I don't. Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but if I'm watching a movie or drama and the characters start having sex then, unless it's a key part of the plot (e.g.dialogue taking place during the action), I hit fast-forward and skip to the post-coital scene. I'm not a prude - I just find it uncomfortable/intrusive to watch other people having sex. Intimate scenes have their place in movies/dramas with an obviously sensual theme - each to their own. But if it's a movie/drama of any other genre, and the sex scene doesn't advance the plot in any way, why linger on it? Just me?

No its boring. I assume its for (male) viewers generally.

This. That's who the sex scenes are for.
Usually to include a bit of female nudity for titillation.

bombastix · 24/02/2024 08:53

No. They are nearly always dire.

Except the one in Jonathan Creek where Maddy and Jonathan nearly have sex but then she discovers he's checking his heart rate monitor in case it gets overloaded and she hits him with a pillow instead.

WandaWonder · 24/02/2024 08:54

No because it looks fake, I wouldn't like it if it's real either, but the sounds are worse like sucking on a hoover

Crumpetdisappointment · 24/02/2024 08:54

@otherwayup yes i agree about All of us strangers, i was ready to cringe but i didnt need to,

notreadyandable · 24/02/2024 08:54

No. I fast forward. I'm just watching the sopranos (I know 20 years too late). There was a scene where he gives his wife a fur coat and they have sex. It wasn't necessary. They could have cut as she opened the coat and I would have been able to put two and two together. Also loud slurpy kissing.

Zonder · 24/02/2024 08:54

No, I'd rather it was just hinted at. Less embarrassing for everyone - actors, film crew, me and my teenage kids 🤣

I can't think of any film or programme where it actually added anything to see what happened next. I'd rather skip to the next scene.

Jennalong · 24/02/2024 08:55

Or the ones where they can hardly get through the front door and start ripping each others clothes off ? That makes me laugh.
Although Ive wondered about how often it's all frantic and thought to myself , if that's how everyone else does it ? because it's never happened like that to me !

Crumpetdisappointment · 24/02/2024 08:56

the first series of bridgerton was terrible, but i guess it told the story, he didnt want a child

westisbest1982 · 24/02/2024 08:56

No, I prefer watching porn.

Flensburg · 24/02/2024 08:58

Can't stand it. I always fast forward.

Paradiddlediddle · 24/02/2024 08:59

I do wonder what if there were no depictions of sex anywhere except porn though. Certainly as a teenager I gleaned the basics of sex from watching films. Just hints here and there but it forms a picture in your mind that was helpful later on.
However, nowadays no I’m not mad on sex scenes. Too much orgasming from women without any effort from the man, and now I’m aware of exploited women can feel I can’t shake that off when I’m watching.
Cold Mountain was a good one though.

Hoplolly · 24/02/2024 08:59

They don't bother me, I'm not prudish at all but I'm just a bit meh about them. I don't need to see it and I don't think the visual really adds more to the story (unless it's something like 50 Shades because really that's what the story is. so it's kind of crucial to the plot..)

User135644 · 24/02/2024 09:01

No, if I want to watch other people have sex i'll watch porn. It's an utterly ridiculous aspect of modern tv.

bombastix · 24/02/2024 09:02

Actually sometimes it does matter to a story but you don't have to show it; there is tragic but also comic scene with Hugh Grant as Jeremy Thorpe with Ben Wilshaw as Norman Scott. They show the creepy seduction which must have happened in real life and how cynical a process it was, but not the deed. It wouldn't have added anything to the story if they had.

This. I love the show Power. But it's very male oriented. 1/3 graphic violence, 1/3 OTT sex scenes, and 1/3 great plot twists.

I watched it with DM and just skipped the sex. It's way too cringe to watch with your mum! Now watching again with a friend of mine who hasn't seen it before... we actually paused one sex scene that was one step away from hardcore porn and had a long and quite interesting discussion about the um... logistics of the behind-the-scenes when portraying sex so graphic it looked real, without actually having sex Grin We decided that he had to have taken a secret drug that was like anti-viagra!

Rosestulips · 24/02/2024 09:03

Depends on the context and who is watching with me.

LunaNorth · 24/02/2024 09:04

Now my kids are adults, I find it cringy if the actors are in their 20s. I couldn’t watch Normal People.

So give it a few years and I’ll only be able to watch pensioners getting it on 😂

Newgirls · 24/02/2024 09:04

This is fascinating! Just shows that men are the majority of directors. Clearly for most women on here we prefer the story telling rather than watching tv sex

ChiefEverythingOfficer · 24/02/2024 09:07

I am so with you OP.

Outlander was the worst for this.

50 shades is porn though. If it's standard drama there's absolutely no need for it.

Yes, especially since it's always always PIV sex only. I've literally never seen cunnilingus depicted in film ever. Even in things like The Handmaid Tale where the whole point of a sex scene was the woman gaining back control of her sexual self, it was still only PIV sex with her on top (to indicate she was in control).

Jc2001 · 24/02/2024 09:10

MadMadamMimz · 24/02/2024 07:47

No and 99% of the time the sex scene adds nothing to the plot or characters and is completely unnecessary.

Mind you, I feel the same about action sequences and find them boring. I wish there was just a pop-up on screen that says "there was a car chase" and then we can get back to the main storyline. I could watch James Bond in 10mins if that was the case!

Sounds like you're watching the wrong type of films 😄

I'm sure men in general would rather not have them either and find it distracting if they're trying to watch a standard drama. If they want to watch sex they'll watch porn in their own privacy.

It's all a bit pervy, especially if they're watching these shows with family members etc.

FiveFoxes · 24/02/2024 09:15

No. I don't want to watch sex scenes.

Sometimes it is crucial to the story that sex has taken place. We don't usually need to see it to know that, we all know how it works!

But what is worse is programs and films where there is no need for and sex or relationship at all and it's shoehorned in. I haven't seen Oppenheimer, but I thought it was about the invention of the atom bomb, so I can't think how sex was relevant.

Only if its Andrew Scott
