I do, I’m afraid. I think she should be able to come home. She was 15! Have any men been stripped of their citizenship that we know about?

I work in mental health and I am not seeing a typical PTSD reaction at all, although disassociation should not be ruled out. You seem to be searching for a way to understand her, without truly appreciating her values are so different to yours.
However, there is no evidence to suggest she was groomed or forced overseas, she willingly flew there. Willingly remained there for many years despite being offered escape route multiple times. Including the secret services.

You don't have any idea how grooming happens. It's a bit like saying that those girls in Rotherham willingly slept with all those older men as the time when they were not resisting or saying they were raped. It was only years later that it dawned on them and others that they were were groomed. What about the victims of Jimmy Saville- those girls at the also seemed to be willingly wanting to sleep with them. We only understand grooming process more now and Shamina was groomed by the very virtue of her age if nothing else.

I'd like to think of my 15yo decided on on a whim to fly to Turkey one way without an adult that questions would be asked. At the very least, "where are you staying and do you have proof of accomodation?" "Who are you meeting" "what are your plans"

It is entirely the UK's fault that it was allowed to happen.
They were groomed and it's our countries fault the others are dead.
3 pretty blonde white girls would have been stopped and questioned and parents called.

I don't trust shamima, I don't understand how she's still alive. But it's not right to leave her there, she should be in custody. She needs a psych analysis at the minimum

The first bit is the one thing I have wondered from the start. How the hell were 3 unsupervised teenagers able to leave the UK and fly to turkey without anyone asking what they were doing and for proof.

Yep, the authorities knew that this was a thing.

These girls got lucky.

You are underestimating the impact and the risk of a British role model welcomed back, one that appears to be glorifying murder and beheadings. You clearly have never been involved in a terrorist incident in the U.K. and appear to have very little comprehension of the horror and carnage. Perhaps research the PTSD and trauma of the innocent people involved in the ISIS inspired horrors in Manchester or London.

The hand wringing on here makes me terrified of a Labour government.

If you work in mental health then why not do a bit of research on how this grooming happens? It's actually quite basic social psychology.

Newchapterbeckons · 23/02/2024 21:09

But we don’t care about her or anyone like this. They are the very opposite of everything we hold true in this country. You can’t commit despicable crimes in another country and expect the U.K. to welcome you back!!

We have a RIGHT to safety, and to expect our government and security services to keep us safe.

Regardless of heritage if you join a death cult you will not be welcome back here. They can stay in the camps and make their own plans. I will NOT be responsible for terrorists and murderers. I don’t want to pay for you or see you back here cashing in on your crimes. I will never support this. We have a beautiful country, with decent people but honestly it’s beyond my comprehension that anyone would support this terrorist regime by inviting them back here to wreck havoc and murder.

Well, it’s backfiring because this government’s new law on revoking citizenship is making decent, law-abiding, naturalised citizens like me not give a shit about your ‘beautiful country’.

Respect is a two way street and the way Britain has become, it deserves none.

Voone · 23/02/2024 21:58

Would you be happy if the UK got lumbered with terrorists from other countries because the other countries made them stateless?

That’s a valid question. But, honestly, yes I would understand if a terrorist held UK citizenship, had another citizenship revoked and became our problem.

This is what happened to Begum, but in reverse. She was never stateless.

I genuinely cannot see what the issue is with Bangladesh having to stand behind its citizenship law. If it creates problems for Bangladesh they should change their law.

Isitovernow123 · 23/02/2024 22:07

No. No sympathy what so ever. She made her choice, she has no regrets of her choice.
for those who are saying they have sympathy, have you seen what the effect religious choice has on the world?

Yawn, another variation of let her hang because she’s Muslim. So far so racist.

You are so arrogant thinking you know better than the Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry and the New York Times 😂

Why do you feel less good about the UK because of the treatment of Shamima Begum?

How does that affect you?

Some countries don’t allow dual citizenship at all - Austria, India, Japan, Holland (mostly) for example. Do you think they’re terrible for having that policy?

hot2trotter · 23/02/2024 22:12

Not in the slightest.

You’d probably feel less sad if your daughter had been in Manchester Arena for the Ariana Grande concert. Begum said that bombing was justified.

Nope. I understand the difference between a threat to national security and a trafficked child.i find it sad that you don't.

Because any of us can be treated like Shamima. The government and the likes of Suella can make up any old shit and I would lose my citizenship.

I have no loyalty to a country like that. Fuck them.

And not allowing dual citizenship is different to revoking citizenship of the country you’re a citizen of.

Any of us can be treated like Begum if we go to Syria and join ISIL.

”Make up any old shit”? Seriously?

Whatsinthebag2 · 23/02/2024 22:18

I listened to a BBC podcast where the woman who was married to El Shafee Elsheikh was trying to get herself and her children out of one of these camps and back to Canada. She is in Canada now but under house arrest.
Having all these Isis members in camps in Syria is a nightmare waiting to happen. Don't they remove the boy children and put them in separate camps when they are a certain age ? It's surely a breeding ground for extremism.

BronwenTheBrave · 23/02/2024 22:18

I think it is terrible that she is punished for making mistakes as a 15 yo teenager.
I think you are being stupidly unreasonable for making it a gender issue when a simple google search would show that 00s of men have been stripped of their UK citizenship.
