How many steps do you do a day?

No reason, just being nosey :) I work from home at a desk 5 days a week and average around 11,000 steps a day (barely anything during work hours but then make up for it chasing the kids around on evenings and weekends). I thought this was about average since I’m overweight and not actively trying to keep my steps up. Friend is shocked and says I must be cheating somehow. So let me know- what’s your step count average and do you work to get it higher?

I usually do 10,000 steps a day which includes a ten minute walk x 4 and then general wandering around the office. I get more when I walk the dog in the evening but that's my exercise, the 10,000 is my bog standard amount regardless of the weather etc.

LividBath · 18/02/2024 15:15

It's 3pm. I went for a run this morning (out for half an hour, run slow) and I'm still only on 7128.

If I don't deliberately go "for a walk" and am at work during the day it's usual for me to be on 6/7000 by bedtime. I have to be out and about or exercising to hit 10, certainly never just "in the house" unless your house is mansion.

lljkk · 18/02/2024 15:15

Lots, I win, lol.

firef1y · 18/02/2024 15:17

I average around 20k, but it ranges from 15k to 30k depending on the day of the week and whether I've had a long run. Most I've done is 75k and that was when I ran a marathon

FUPAgirl · 18/02/2024 15:17

I don't understand how you cover 5 miles 'chasing' the dc around in the evening, it definitely doesn't sound accurate - I can see your friends point

TakingTheHorseToFrance · 18/02/2024 15:17

I sit for 5 hours a day work but always reach 10k+ per day just doing housework in the evening and doing stuff with the kids. If I get out for a walk I'll average about 16k steps. I live in a very big house so to go from kitchen to upstairs and back down be 200+ steps. Weekends usually more

asdunno · 18/02/2024 15:19

I do 10-12 thousand but that includes fitness class and two 45 min dog walks. If I'm sat all day it's more like 5k

AHFaemale · 18/02/2024 15:24

Please tell me what you use to count your steps. I'd like to start foing that.

Tagyoureit · 18/02/2024 15:26

Varies from 5 to 6k a day!

What are you using to measure your step count?

I have an actual pedometer that I clip on to my jeans and that will vary massively to my fit bit and my phone when i use it! I was pushing the pram the other day and my fit bit didn't register my steps but my phone stats were far higher.

grumpypedestrian · 18/02/2024 15:27

15-18000 steps. I walk everywhere and don’t drive, plus I work in retail.

SagaNorensPorche · 18/02/2024 15:29

460000 inbetween eating massive salads and week old mutant chicken.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 18/02/2024 15:30

Your house must be massive?

On days I WFH, I struggle to get more than 5,000 (usually between 3-4k) unless I actually leave the house and go for a walk.

HemlockSoup · 18/02/2024 15:30

I'm surprised your step count is so high working from home 5 days a week. I usually hit about 9500 steps a day on average, and that's making sure I get out for an hour's walk every evening.

Sparklybanana · 18/02/2024 15:31

I work from home but pick up kids from school which is about 15 min walk round trip and do a 20 minute walk at lunchtime and usually hit 6k from that. More at weekends but we usually do a long walk. I m with your friend - 11k chasing the kids around seems unlikely. Unless you chase them to the next town and back?
I've been on my feet most of today and gone for a 30 min walk but I'm on 7.5k. My steps usually tally with my oh apple watch and my sons watch so I'm fairly confident mine are about right. My drummer friend hits about 17k though but barely walks at all so maybe you are doing some hand movements that confuses your pedometer?

viccat · 18/02/2024 15:31

Average around 8,500 according to Garmin but actually most weekdays are around 10k and then one weekend day is very lazy.

Yours does sound very high for that level of activity. I get most of mine walking from home to the station and from there to work and back again.

BobbyBiscuits · 18/02/2024 15:32

Recently I've had to walk a bit so it has been about 5000. Usually much less as I can't go far from home, so less than 1000 probably. I have a hip issue/ osteoperois and I do have a lot of stairs in my house, so that's my excuse. Haha. I used to walk about 10 miles a day.

F1ymetothetoon · 18/02/2024 15:33

@SagaNorensPorche you absolute amateur ! I do at least eleventy billion just striding between the Rolls and the Ferrari.

PawsisShady · 18/02/2024 15:34

Fuck all. At my desk all day, 2000 I guess
Do spin and weights after work

CheesecakeandCrackers · 18/02/2024 15:34

About 2000 when I wfh or on lazy weekends like today. 10k on a busy or office day

Doje · 18/02/2024 15:34

When I'm at the office and don't do the school run it can be as low as 4-5k. Days I WFH and do the dog walk(s) + school runs + after-school activity run abouts I average 12-18k steps.

Pigeonqueen · 18/02/2024 15:35

I think a lot of step counters are inaccurate. I can’t see how you can do 11k a day working from home unless you’re literally walking in circles most of the day….! I go for a walk (1-2 hours) most days and average around 6k a day.

bringmorewashing · 18/02/2024 15:35

Mine is usually 5-6k on WFH days. 10-12k on weekends. At the moment it's almost nothing as I'm ill and glued to the sofa!

SisterAgatha · 18/02/2024 15:36

I wouldn’t trust a fit bit, I get an extra 2k from folding my washing.

Garmin shows around 10k
iPhone shows around 6-8k
when I couldn’t drive it was 27k a day, standard

Flumpywoo · 18/02/2024 15:36

I do about 9-10,000 working from home but that's because of the school run 10 mins x 4.
If I pop to the shops during my lunch break then I usually do about 11-12,000 a day. Do you also do the school run, as that could be why you do so many? When it was lockdown I'd be lucky to do 5,000 a day!

Natsku · 18/02/2024 15:37

According to my watch, this month I've averaged 6484 steps a day. Weekends I do a lot less unless we go out. During the week I walk to school in the morning but its only a 15 minute walk, not many steps, then most of the day sat down only walking to and from the break room between lessons but on Tuesdays and Wednesdays I have practical days and tend to go over 10k, walking around the hangar all day.
I really ought to stop accepting lifts home every day as then I'd get a bit more exercise in.
