Do you need one every day?

I was told off at the weekend by someone who said it was wasteful and environmentally irresponsible to have a bath or shower every day. I said she was wrong. AIBU?

It’s very personal. I shower every day. Or massive long showers. But I have hyperhydrosis and that means I sweat a lot. I don’t smell but I’m sure that if I didn’t shower daily I would. It also wakes me up and sets me up for the day. Occasionally on a weekend when we aren’t going anywhere I might have a PJ day and not shower but then I really feel like I stink and remember why o have a shower every day.

It’s wasteful of you’re having really long leisurely showers. But then again it might be what you need for your own well being.

This gives me the major ick
The Idea that putting clean pants onto an unwashed arse and other areas makes it ok is just ugh

She didn’t say she didn’t wash her arse 🙄

JamSandle · 13/02/2024 22:11

I shower twice daily.

Houseplanter · 13/02/2024 22:12

I don't get how anyone can put the same pjs on night after night. How is it different from the same pants day after day?

marrybarry · 13/02/2024 22:18

Ugh

People! Unless you have a medical reason not to, shower every day!

I know two people who shower twice a week and claim they don't smell. They may think they don't smell, but they do. A dirty unwashed smell.

PawPaw24 · 13/02/2024 22:29

You don't need to shower every day to keep clean, I've cared for people that haven't had a shower or bath in a decade and they don't smell
I mean if you're not washing any part of yourself for 3,4,5 days then yes that's not good
But not showering for a day doesn't mean your bum smells Confused

firef1y · 13/02/2024 22:32

I exercise daily, sometimes twice a day. You really wouldn't want to be around me if I didn't bathe or shower after each session.

Depends. In puberty or a manual job, yes daily. Older than 30 and younger than 50 in a not strenuous job with good 48hr deodorant applied after last wash? Prob every other day. By 60 every day again.

What happens at 60 to mean a daily bath or shower is required. I’m 64. I don’t have periods and I’m not incontinent, not even when I sneeze! Do enlighten me as to why I need to immerse myself in water on a daily basis 🤷‍♀️

Mibarra · 13/02/2024 23:07

OMG! I thought everyone in the world shower or bathe every day. Obviously, I'm not English though

Nantescalling · 13/02/2024 23:32

I think we are all agreed that it is more environmentally friendly not to wash every day. Worth mentioning that a shower uses much, much less water than a bath. From a health point of view, I have read that washing twice a eek is sufficient. Obviously it is on a case by case basis. If you have been doing something strenuous or if you perspire a lot then obviously his makes a big difference.

When people say they don't shower or bathe they generally mean they don't wash either.
Have a full wash or bed bath isn't as nice as a shower but it does the job.
Yes I'm a HCP
Yes your bum, genitals, armpits smell if you don't wash/ shower/ bathe daily
Do you think all the whiffy people on the tube/ bus think they smell ?
They just aren't aware of it which is unfortunate for the rest of us.

Miisty · 14/02/2024 08:14

A bath eases a lot of back pain so it’s what works for you

EmeraldA129 · 14/02/2024 09:49

Id say it’s not very eco conscious to have a big bath every day but tbh wouldn’t think about it from that point of view & most folk have showers most of the time don’t they?

I wouldn’t have one every day because it pulls all the moisture out your skin… unless I was doing things to get sweaty which I rarely am! 😂

I have said Yabu as I think everyone should stop assuming you are dirty 24 hours after previous shower/ bath & instead base their bathing on what they have been doing.

A lot of people on Mumsnet are ageist and regard anyone over 60 as basically an oozing puddle of decay.

SausageRoll5862 · 14/02/2024 13:12

I'd tell them to keep their hooters out. How many times you shower/bath is your business and nobody else's!

Jeannie88 · 14/02/2024 18:08

I used to have one every day but now every other day in cooler months but every day when it's hot. X

Ilovecleaning · 14/02/2024 18:22

Some people don’t wash their clothes enough. Clothes pick up grime and smells from everything and everywhere.

You are only sleeping in them and not going out

I change mine every 3 days or so

mydogisthebest · 14/02/2024 19:27

I shower every morning as I sweat a lot in bed. I also wash my hair as it is very short and sticks out in every direction every morning.

I have timed it though and I am in the shower for 4 minutes. It's not a power shower so using much less water than a bath would.

I also only do a couple of washloads a week unlike so many that use their machine every day or even a few times a day so not going to feel guilty for the small amount of water I use showering

FatPrincess · 14/02/2024 19:35

I need to shower at least once a day as I work at muddy, dusty, sites and go to the gym.

K0OLA1D · 14/02/2024 19:39

It's not wrong to shower or bathe everyday but also not wrong not to. I shower every other day and wash my hair twice a week.

Mibarra · 13/02/2024 23:07

What a stupid comment

Houseplanter · 14/02/2024 20:57

How is sleeping in 3 day old pajamas ok because you don't go out? I'm as clean at home as I am when out.

greengreengrass25 · 14/02/2024 21:59

I don't feel the need to wash pyjamas every day when I'm at home sleeping in bed

However I shower in the morning to go to work and wear clean clothes.

Peaches1407 · 14/02/2024 22:34

I don't shower every day but I wash my nether regions every day. Can't start my day without doing that.
