I was told off at the weekend by someone who said it was wasteful and environmentally irresponsible to have a bath or shower every day. I said she was wrong. AIBU?

p.s I’m oily. My hair needs washing daily (tried to train it, change shampoo, dry shampoo etc, nothing works. I’m 36 and have had this since I was 14. I hate it), I suffer with acne in my back, chest and face because of it. No way I could not shower daily.

MasterBeth · 12/02/2024 21:29

Yes, exactly.

This says, if you're caring for someone, they should have a bath or shower at least twice a week. Not that "the NHS recommends showering twice a week "

Scottishskifun · 12/02/2024 21:45

I think it depends on the person and activity level. My children have a bath most nights as its part of their bedtime routine but also they run around at nursery and it's a miracle if they both don't have paint, mud, food or other substance in their hair on their arms etc.

I have a shower every other day but essential wash in between unless I've been doing exercise then it's a shower.
When I was swim training when a teenager I would shower twice a day I had to for chlorine removal and stop my hair turning green even with a cap on!

Belovedbagle · 12/02/2024 22:10

Shower in morning after gym and bath in evening. It wouldn't occur to me to go a day without washing.

GladAllOver · 12/02/2024 22:48

Well I'm interested to read all the opinions on here. The woman I quoted was insistant about me not showering every day, but didn't actually say how infrequent her own were. Perhaps next time I see her I'll ask.

I shower every morning. I wouldn't feel away and fresh if I didn't.

I also have an evening shower depending in what I'm doing.

Easily 10 showers a week but only wash my hair every 3rd day roughly.

I don't care what anyone else does once I'm not exposed to BO.

Notellinganyone · 12/02/2024 23:02

I have a bath most evenings. I have a long commute and a full on job as a teacher and it’s a lifesaver for me. I have a small Victorian bath and reckon it doesn’t use a s much water as my DH’s lengthy shower. I also don’t drive so if anyone challenged me on it I’d give them pretty short shrift.

Flamme · 12/02/2024 23:17

YABU for starting a thread which brings out all the competitive cleanliness bores.

MzHz · 12/02/2024 23:18

Honestly @GladAllOver syop giving air time to people who think they have an opinion on your decisions

you’re an adult. Go adult and tell them to do the same and leave you to it.

MzHz · 12/02/2024 23:19

Like the phrase says “opinions are like arseholes; everyone’s got one.”

Cakencookieobsessed · 12/02/2024 23:21

I bathe daily. It wouldn't kill me to not have a bath every day but I don't fancy walking around with sticky pits and fanny and greasy hair. I like to be clean and well groomed. So yes I need a daily bath/ shower.

Garlickit · 12/02/2024 23:26

I rang the water people because my bill seems surprisingly low (it's metered). "Oh, you use very little water!" said the helper, in tones of astonishment.

I must be a skank 😂 Grateful to the PP who posted the NHS guideline! I'm not going to check, in case it doesn't say twice a week after all 🚿

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 13/02/2024 01:17

Who is this person and why does she get to police how often you shower? Tell her to go boil her head.

dollyolly · 12/02/2024 15:36

God, another thing we're meant to feel guilty about. Well, I won't.

OP, I would love to know more about the person who told you that. Does she drive, go on holiday, use central heating, buy new clothes...?

Does she have children? or pets? or use the internet?

HelpMeGetThrough · 13/02/2024 06:40

I'd have thought most people do have a shower every day, that's pretty normal.

Saying that, on here, you'd be accused of being solely responsible for ruining the planet by some.

Nannyfannybanny · 13/02/2024 11:50

People who say that they don't shower/bath daily, aren't saying that they don't wash,face,groin/pits. As for specific stuff if you make the excuse of dry skin.....I have been under the care of firstly a gyna consultant and now a dermatologist for almost 2 years. A lot of the original scripts given burnt my skin. I now have to use an emolient , Two of my dgc get eczema so badly their skin cracks and bleeds.

They didn't say they washed though, they were specific in saying they didn't need to at all.
Yes that was my point
Use appropriate skin care-no one is specifying carbolic soap for all
Still disgusting not to bathe or shower daily.

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 13/02/2024 01:20

Does she have children? or pets? or use the internet?

If she had pets then she WOULD have to shower more

BananaPyjamaLlama · 13/02/2024 14:25

If you are sweaty or dirty then yes have a shower. If having a shower every day helps your MH then yes have a shower every day (but preferably find a more eco alternative).
Otherwise then yes yabu. A shower everyday isnt necessary and is wasteful (and I think Ive read its actually bad for your skin?)

EnterFunnyNameHere · 13/02/2024 14:38

Not having a daily shower doesn't mean not having a wash every day. If I've not been active I might not have a shower each day, but I would always have a sink wash giving the important areas a good scrub with soap and a flannel.

I'd hazard a guess that a vigorous scrub with flannel and soap out of the shower does more than the folk who just stand under the shower water maybe putting on a bit of shower gel with their hands anyway haha.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 13/02/2024 15:05

I would tell anyone who told me off for having a bath or shower to fuck off. I have one twice a day and sometimes more if I go to the gym

happychops · 13/02/2024 17:53

Given that I wake up each morning with my hair looking like Ken Dodds, a daily shower is essential!

Ilovecleaning · 13/02/2024 18:20

I have 2-3 showers a week. 3 more often than 2. DH has a long hot shower every morning: all the bloody shower gel, hot water, tiles dripping with water and wet towels - drives me mad. 😡

Your DH uses the shower, hot water, towels and shower gel as they are intended to be used and you are angry at him?
😂
This place is nuts sometimes.

Midnlghtrain · 12/02/2024 13:30

I shower / bathe every day, sometimes twice a day. Not sure I'm putting that at the top of my eco friendly worries 😂 are they saying it's wasteful because of the water use?

Same and fresh clothes/pyjamas everyday
