Do you need one every day?

I was told off at the weekend by someone who said it was wasteful and environmentally irresponsible to have a bath or shower every day. I said she was wrong. AIBU?

I voted YABU because most people don't need to shower every day and it is bad for your skin to shower so often
That being said, there will be people with medical conditions that mean they produce a lot of sweat and bad odours in which case they may need to.
There are also people in dirty jobs that will also have to

But normal healthy individuals that aren't rolling around in muck for a job only need shower 2-3 times a week

Historygirl91 · 12/02/2024 14:10

I have always showered every other day, the only exception being after exercise when I’ll shower straight away. People have said to me that this is a bit gross but I don’t see how it is? I think it’s bad for your skin to shower every day.

Houseplanter · 12/02/2024 14:12

Shower every morning, bath every evening. Have done for years and won't be stopping anytime soon

healthywino · 12/02/2024 13:29

I don't shower every day. It's very bad for your skin, and I have VERY dry and sensitive skin. I shower every 3rd day. But I don't sweat much, and I work from home. Obviously underwear is fresh every day. Bra changed every 3rd day. Fresh pyjamas every 3rd day.

This gives me the major ick
The Idea that putting clean pants onto an unwashed arse and other areas makes it ok is just ugh

Bathtimebarbara · 12/02/2024 14:15

Shower morning and night and if I’ve been working in a particular area I also shower after work (but then again at bedtime)
Same if I gym after work.

I love feeling clean
I can’t work how anyone can relax in bed knowing they have dirty feet for example

My skin isn’t dry. I am complexly healthy. My showers are short and probably use much less water than someone soaking for ages once every three days!

TipsySquirrel · 12/02/2024 14:16

Well it’s not a yes or no situation. Someone taking a 4 minute shower every day with a water saving shower head at a moderate temperature is using less resources than someone taking a scoldingly hot shower every 3 days that’s lasts for 25 minutes. It’s also not a case of showers are a better option because again, it’s the length of time in a shower. Or what if the person with a daily shower/bath is connected to a grey water system so that water is treated to a standard suitable for flushing toilets and use in a washing machine but not to a drinkable level?

That’s before getting into the debate of whether people should be showering everyday, which varies as everyone is different.

Fraaahnces · 12/02/2024 14:16

I don’t every day because I have problems with low blood pressure and often faint. (I will shower if other people are home.) I wash my face, neck, torso, pits and bits with a clean washer in the sink otherwise. (Feet get scrubbed in the bath if I have worn sandals or dodgy dog-walking boots.) I always wear antiperspirant and don’t stink, but I absolutely prefer to shower!!!

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 12/02/2024 14:17

Need to, no.... No one NEEDS to shower/bathe daily. Being whiffy won't kill anyone.

Want to shower/bathe daily? That's a valid choice.

I shower roughly every other day. Coincides with when I do my sport, and when I'm just WFH so not seeing anyone who will be bothered if I have an odour. My skin gets too dry and my hair too greasy if I wash more often..

HowWillTheyCopeWithAnyRealProblems · 12/02/2024 14:18

I have a shower every morning - I wouldn't dream of putting on clean clothes without having a shower first.

caringcarer · 12/02/2024 14:18

I only run a hot bath about once a week, the other days I have a quick 5 minute shower or its 10 mins if I wash my hair. I don't do much exercise don't sweat much. My teen needs 2 showers every day occasionally 3 as he does a lot of sports and he soaks in the tub 2 or 3 times a week too. Water is expensive if it's the summer and we get drought warning/hose pipe ban I cut back to just 5 mins shower and don't take bath and stop teen taking bath too.

Odd comment, unless you don't clean properly how is your arse unwashed as such? are you washing it very think you sue the loo??

avocadotofu · 12/02/2024 14:22

I personally need one daily and we give DS5 a daily bath.

Hoglet70 · 12/02/2024 14:22

I bath or shower every day. Yuk to not doing it. Obviously it's personal preference and the only person I get close enough to smell is DH and he showers every day too.

Cosyblankets · 12/02/2024 14:23

When someone else pays my bills they can have an opinion on how often i bathe or shower.

DdyDaisyDaresYou · 12/02/2024 14:24

I bathe in bleach at 3x a times a day and anything less is disgusting

Nannyfannybanny · 12/02/2024 14:26

I suffer with vulval eczema have to wash that area daily with emollients. Feet washed at the same time.Rest of me, couple of times a week, with the hair wash. Dry skin and my dermatologist said daily bath/shower are bad for your skin. My generation grew up often without bathrooms, you still washed the essentials.

Geripremi · 12/02/2024 14:27

My habit has been to shower every morning (if not washing my hair this is literally a minute) and shower at night (again a minute - 2 max), on work days, but only mornings on weekends. I've just took early retirement - but plan a lot more exercise, so will still most likely shower twice. I don't feel guilty. I save water, on hair wash days, by applying conditioner, turning shower off, shaving legs etc, then turning back on to rinse off,top to toe.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 12/02/2024 14:29

Some people NEED to, some people don't. I work in an office so don't get dirty or sweaty but I still like to have a shower a day. However, most trades people should probably shower every day as they WILL get dirty and sweaty. A strip wash is adequate for some people.

Moier · 12/02/2024 14:35

Some weeks l don't go out of the house.. but l shower every morning. A quick shower.. the fresh feeling it gives you is amazing..
I just have to wash away my dead skin cells.
Clean clothes and clean night wear every day too .
I'd feel yucky otherwise.

WhatFlavourIsIt · 12/02/2024 14:53

I don't think that as a blanket rule, you need a bath or shower every day. This weekend, for example, I didn't have either. My last shower was Thurs eve & I'll probably have a shower this evening or tomorrow morning. I don't smell or feel gross at all.

RobertaFirmino · 12/02/2024 15:23

I would very much like to shower daily but need help getting in and out. DH leaves early once or twice a week so that's when I have a stripwash at the sink. Hands, face, under arms, under boobs, navel, between the legs and feet. Feel revolting if have not had a stripwash at least in the morning.

I appreciate that's not the same for everyone though and some will feel (and smell) fine without a quick splash.

mondaytosunday · 12/02/2024 15:23

I didn't shower yesterday- wasn't going out and I'm on my own in the house at the moment. But if going to work or out out then definitely shower that day.
I don't think it's necessary to shower twice a day - if going to the gym or whatever then I'd wait till after that. Some jobs excepted.

RandomUsernameHere · 12/02/2024 15:31

I shower most days, but don't think there's anything wrong with going a day without. I probably won't have a shower tonight as going for a run tomorrow morning so will have a shower after that.

sunflowerpinks · 12/02/2024 15:34

healthywino · 12/02/2024 13:34

Just to add, in terms of skin health, the NHS recommends showering twice a week. Every time you shower, you strip your skin of all it's natural oils. Same for your hair.

That makes sense.

My skin would not survive a daily shower, especially in the dry winter air!
