I was told off at the weekend by someone who said it was wasteful and environmentally irresponsible to have a bath or shower every day. I said she was wrong. AIBU?

I pay for the water and electricity so I don’t care! I have a bath daily and my husband a shower or we sometimes share the bath water and just top it up. I would have smelly pits if I didn’t and I’m not in a bloody caravan so shan’t be having a sink wash!

Maireas · 12/02/2024 19:25

Plus, a regular shower doesn't strip your skin of all its natural oils.

sunflowerpinks · 12/02/2024 19:27

Depending on your skin and age, water can indeed dry out your skin. Add to that shower gel or shampoo and it can really be drying for some people's skin.

I shower every day. Most people will smell if they don’t wash daily, if you get up close. They’ll say on here that they don’t smell, because their husband and family say they don’t. But they do.

Unfortunately I can vouch for this getting on the tube.
We call it bum smell in our house 🤮

Do we need a showering thread on MN every day?

Maireas · 12/02/2024 19:30

Our ancestors didn’t have indoor toilets but that doesn’t mean I’m about to go a poo in the garden shed!

Exactly! I do hope we've moved on from the Bronze Age 🙄

Of course.

greengreengrass25 · 12/02/2024 19:32

I could never go to work without showering and I do getting hot and sweaty

I still shower at weekend

I have occasionally had a strip wash at home if there was a problem with heating etc

cheapskatemum · 12/02/2024 19:34

I haven't RTWT, but I'm going to say that I "need" a lovely deep, hot bubble bath every day during the cold winter months. It both warms me up and cheers me up.

So use a shower / bath oil
People who don't do basic daily hygiene are just incredibly lazy but do the whole dry skin thing i as an excuse nstead of using appropriate products.

A daily bath or shower is minimum
I cannot imagine putting clean pants on a 3 day unwashed bum / fanny
Just gross

When someone else pays my bills they can have an opinion on how often i bathe or shower.

Interesting

so as long as a person pays, their environmental impact is no business of anyone’s. They can pollute how they wish, pay for it, and you have no opinion?

I don't shower every day. It's very bad for your skin, and I have VERY dry and sensitive skin. I shower every 3rd day. But I don't sweat much, and I work from home. Obviously underwear is fresh every day. Bra changed every 3rd day. Fresh pyjamas every 3rd day.

That's similar to me and DD26. We both have certain dry skin and disabilities that makes any more really difficult.

NC2024 · 12/02/2024 19:40

I don't always shower daily
Showered last night, haven't today, WFH tomorrow so will shower after work because I know I'm doing a workout afterwards

Nobody about to offend and I use a bidet bottle so no unwashed bum Grin

I always feel cleaner for longer if I do a proper wash with soap and scrub everything (between toes, legs, belly button etc) rather than just sloshing a bit of shower gel about

sunflowerpinks · 12/02/2024 19:56

It's not laziness. I just don't see a need to shower daily - I don't smell, I don't sweat much and I get cold after a shower. It also costs money that I'd rather not spend.

Anonymouslyposting · 12/02/2024 20:00

I try to do every other day, but I often do every day. Nothing warms you up as well in winter and my hair sometimes goes greasy super fast.

Loloj · 12/02/2024 20:04

its surely more about the length of time spent in the shower and how much water is being used? I shower daily but I'm usually in less than 5 mins and it’s not high pressure so not using a lot of water. It would be wasteful to have a 20 minute shower every day.

newnameagain1976 · 12/02/2024 20:13

I exercise most days so yes, I need at least one shower a day.

LimeViewer · 12/02/2024 20:15

Depends. In puberty or a manual job, yes daily. Older than 30 and younger than 50 in a not strenuous job with good 48hr deodorant applied after last wash? Prob every other day. By 60 every day again.

Maireas · 12/02/2024 20:17

Why by 60 every day again?

It's basic hygiene to wash your underarms, genitals and bottom daily.
You do smell, everyone does after a day, you and all the other unwashed people just don't think they do.
It's revolting not to and very lazy.
So unpleasant for other people to be around you.

arlequin · 12/02/2024 20:50

If I ever don't wash I really notice it - feel grubby and yucky

Keychangeoff · 12/02/2024 20:58

At least three of our family have one bath a day, sometimes more. I find it a relaxing beginning and end to my day. I'd worry more about being a rude dickhead and commenting on someones water usage. Please do make sure to ask about her petrol and or meat consumption next time she comments on your lifestyle.

43ontherocksporfavor · 12/02/2024 21:04

I like baths for 5 minutes but mainly getting in. Then I start to feel hot and it makes my skin dry. Rarely have one. Our bath gets dusty due to lack of use. I don’t really sweat at the moment as it’s so cold and I don’t use deodorant in the winter unless I’m doing strenuous exercise. I’m 52 and just don’t sweat much at all in the winter. I still shower daily but only a few minutes to wash the essentials.

ZippyZappyZoo · 12/02/2024 21:24

Very rarely I skip a bath / shower. Maybe once a month or so. In the summer I never skip, often shower twice a day.
