Tipping hairdressers

How much do you tip for a cut and blow dry? Standard cut/ trim, nothing fancy done, not going from very long to very short, no fringe or particular style etc. Hair isn’t thick, curly or difficult to manage

OP posts:

To those that do tip- do you also tip other workers which are even lower paid such as your bin collection people, workers in shops, the carer looking after your grandparents in a carehome???

Bin collection people in my area earn more than my hairdresser and more than me. I saw the job advertised last year.
Check out staff aren't allowed to accept cash so tipping them has never occurred to me.

I don’t tip. She’s a talented professional and I’m not going to patronise her by basically saying she doesn’t charge enough.

I bet if you asked her she say she wouldn't feel patronised in the slightest if you tipped her.

Maireas · 11/02/2024 09:30

BlurringTheLines · 11/02/2024 00:16

I usually round it up to the nearest ten pounds, so if my hair costs £57, then I'd give £60, so £3 as a tip for example.

Doesn't £3 seem a bit mean for a tip? I'm not criticising you, more wondering what is an appropriate amount to tip. Minefield!

ShinyBandana · 11/02/2024 09:53

I always tip my hairdresser, I wouldn’t dream of not tipping. I get a great service as well as the hair - sweets, hot water bottle, cappuccino & biscuits, wine, magazines, covers to go over the arms of my glasses so hair dye doesn’t go on them. I’m well looked after.

I go every 4-5 weeks and alternate root touch up & trim & blow dry (£45) and full roots, toner, cut & blow (£75). Once a year I have some new highlights when I have my full roots done (£90). I tip £5 for the touch up visit and £10 for the longer colour sessions.

I tip £15 for cut £84 plus colour £88 — she does a great job

Several people have posted similar comments to this now. You do know they still do a great job even if you don't tip them right? Also the job they do is priced accordingly already.

I don’t tip because I’m afraid of getting bad service, or so that my stylist continues to do a good job. I’m also not implying she gets a low wage.

I tip to appreciate a personal service that is well done.

As with any post on AIBU, any topic will attract a range of responses (eg how often do you do laundry; how much do you spend on groceries per week). The OP has asked how much others tip for a certain service, and I and other posters have answered.

Fair enough for those who say they don’t tip because of the cost of living, I get that and I don’t seek to question their decision. But for those who say it’s demeaning/insulting to tip a stylist, in my opinion you (and I) don’t know what a stylist/beauty therapist thinks about tipping. But I doubt they see it that way.

Just funny how so many of us beat ourselves and others up whatever the situation: whether we don’t tip, feel like we’ve not tipped enough or want to make those who tip feel bad about tipping.

Hot water bottle? What on earth is that for? Period pains?

I wish I hadn't started tipping my hairdresser because I've now found out I pay about £7 more for a cut than 2 of my friends who also go there.

Just stop then? Next time you go take the exact money for the cost of what you're having done.

YOURE NOT OBLIGED TO GIVE A TIP!!!

Mean? Shock

Yes. Would it just seem too small an amount for a tip?

sunflowerpinks · 11/02/2024 11:37

Surely you'll return and use her services again if she does a great job?

If she didn't do a great job, you'd find another, better hairdresser?!

sunflowerpinks · 11/02/2024 11:38

Yes. Would it just seem too small an amount for a tip?

The only thing I'd consider mean is not paying the advertised price.

Right. I was asking about tipping.
I don't tip the hairdresser myself (I pay £75), so am confused by the amounts people do tip, eg £3.

Growlybear83 · 11/02/2024 11:44

The standard amount to tip was always 10% for hairdressers in the UK.

WaltzingWaters · 11/02/2024 11:44

My trim is £13. I give £15. (Mobile hairdresser).

Since when?

Growlybear83 · 11/02/2024 11:46

Since I can first remember my mum going to the hairdressers in the early 1960s.

She always gave 10%? My mother never tipped her hairdresser. She went to the same one every Saturday for over 30 years for a shampoo and set!

Growlybear83 · 11/02/2024 12:41

Yes, without fail, and so did everyone I knew when I was a bit older and started going myself. As I said in an earlier post, hairdressers were not well paid in those days and were as reliant on their tips as serving staff in cafes and restaurants to boost their wages. This was long before the introduction of the minimum wage, and I fully accept that people are saying hairdressers are well paid now - I wouldn't know about that as I haven't used one for such a long time.

Princesspollyyy · 11/02/2024 13:00

I would definitely not be giving someone earning £30k a tip.

Cherryflavouranything · 11/02/2024 13:07

Mine costs £100 for cut and colour. I pay by card & bring a tenner in cash for a tip. North of England.

Xanthammum · 11/02/2024 13:13

I do about 10%

thefallen · 11/02/2024 13:15

Nothing. I pay by card, she puts the price in and I pay it.

ShinyBandana · 11/02/2024 13:19

Princesspollyyy · 11/02/2024 11:26

Hot water bottle? What on earth is that for? Period pains?

lol, well I suppose it could be for period pain

…but it’s a general comfort thing. I’ve never come across this anywhere else before. It’s a v cosy part of the whole experience

Chaiilatte · 11/02/2024 13:22

I don't tip anymore. I used to as I felt obliged to almost, but I've grown a backbone now and just pay the price, thank them and leave. I don't think it's really necessary anymore, the prices are high enough. I don't think hair dressers have a low wage anymore, with all the new items they add on to your colour like olaplex, etc.

Leafpicker2000 · 11/02/2024 13:26

£5 plus a couple of quid if the trainee washes it. I wouldn't tip if it was the salon owner.
I also give a bigger tip at Christmas together with a bottle of fizz.
I take the owner a bottle of wine at Christmas too as i have been going there for years.
