How much do you tip for a cut and blow dry? Standard cut/ trim, nothing fancy done, not going from very long to very short, no fringe or particular style etc. Hair isn’t thick, curly or difficult to manage

O wow, most people don't tip... I thought EVERYONE did?!
I always give about 10%, assumed that was normal. Even though it's a struggle for me usually.

Do people give tips to the garage that repairs their cars?

Very interested to know please!!

I don't tip anyone unless I've had truly phenomenal service above and beyond the norm so probably once a year if that!

Alchemistress · 10/02/2024 19:12

I'm in London. My haircut colour and treatments are about £300 every 3 months or so. I always leave my hairdresser £20 cash. She's self employed, she's excellent at her job and I enjoy the time I spend with her, plus she makes my hair look fabulous. I can afford it.

I don't get tips in my job , doesn't bother me on the slightest.

Bellyblueboy · 10/02/2024 19:13

£40 haircut I tip £5. Have done this for about five years. Haven’t adjusted for inflation!

doilooklikeicare · 10/02/2024 19:13

Pacifybull · 10/02/2024 19:07

I think it’s pretty rude to tip.

I don't always tip but why do you think its rude?

08557lemon555 · 10/02/2024 19:13

Never tip. I’m spending £80 why on earth would I voluntarily pay extra on top?

Pootle23 · 10/02/2024 19:17

I don’t believe in tipping. It’s expensive enough. Tipping in the U.K. is totally unnecessary.

neverbeenskiing · 10/02/2024 19:22

I don't tip except at Christmas. My hairdresser has put her prices up, which I completely understand due to the cost of utilities going up but its expensive enough as it is.

ManchesterLu · 10/02/2024 19:36

I only tip for anything that's above and beyond what I was actually paying for. We're not in the US, people get at least minimum wage for what they do. I don't have a huge amount of money, so giving extra money to someone else who doesn't have much money seems counter productive, and at least I gave them my business in the first place.

chantelion · 10/02/2024 19:37

I don't. Around here it's 150+ for a standard cut so no tipping is going to happen.

Kalevala · 10/02/2024 19:40

Tips to the garage, seriously? There's the sick feeling as you worry about the cost, where you will find the money to keep the car on the road, hoping nothing else will go wrong. I'm hardly going to pay extra!

easylikeasundaymorn · 10/02/2024 19:53

Maireas · 10/02/2024 17:43

No, I never tip the people who do my service or MOT.

this - there's a weird imbalance on MN. Shouts of cheapskate if you don't tip a waiter. Things like hairdressers, taxi drivers also usually seem to expect a tip, but not jobs like bar staff, HCA, teaching assistants, shop staff, mechanics, your amazon/evri/asda/ocado delivery driver, basic council admin staff, call handlers at your bank or internet supplier....yet they all make similarly low wages. I'm aware some of them you can't tip (either because there's no mechanism or because the company prohibits it), but it does make a mockery of the 'they're so badly paid,' rationale.

OneMoreCookieMonster · 10/02/2024 19:58

CJ4713 · 10/02/2024 17:55

To those that do tip- do you also tip other workers which are even lower paid such as your bin collection people, workers in shops, the carer looking after your grandparents in a carehome???

I don't tip shop workers but yes tips or gifts for the garbage men(thought bin made decent to ok ish money), postman, any delivery person, taxi, hair and beauty, restaurants, bars and pubs, local pharmacy and gp, the Crossing guard, teachers, the library...sure there's others.

Anyone who offers a good service I tip or they get some chocolates/biscuits or booze.

People who work in services are often mistreated, under paid, under valued plus the rest. (Sorry that's huge generalisation) I like to show others that they are valued for what they do and how they have had a positive influence in my life. Nothing wrong with a bit of appreciation. And, we also get treated very well in return.

Ilovecakey · 10/02/2024 19:59

I don't

Pacifybull · 10/02/2024 19:59

doilooklikeicare · 10/02/2024 19:13

I don't always tip but why do you think its rude?

It’s patronising and condescending. There’s a whiff of “lower orders” about it. Treat them as professionals.

Kalevala · 10/02/2024 20:03

20% of full-time workers are on under £24.5k. I wonder how many are in tipped jobs?

sunflowerpinks · 10/02/2024 20:15

I own a coffee shop and when I get tipped I find it a bit weird. Like ah look at you earning a pittance, I'll help you out a bit.

I guess it feels condescending and patronising?

I never tip. I pay the requested price and pay for I'm happy with the service, I'll return!

sunflowerpinks · 10/02/2024 20:16

Sorry "if I'm happy with the service"

Healthyhappymama · 10/02/2024 20:19

I used to at least £5 but don't anymore, it's way too expensive as it is, I used to pay under £100 now its nearly £200 . Think independent hairdresser coming to your home is way cheaper now and they deserve a tip

Princesspollyyy · 10/02/2024 20:21

@OneMoreCookieMonster

You say people that work in services should be tipped, but what about nursing? They are paid really low for the work they do and the long hours put in, and don't get any tips!! Not a penny. The same goes for care workers.

EbonyRaven · 10/02/2024 20:21

LottieandLisa · 10/02/2024 16:22

I never tip. No need to tip anyone in 2024. The minimum pay act has been around for almost 30 years, and hairdressers get as much, and often more than people working on checkouts, or on a reception desk, or stacking shelves, or the people who works in the cake shop or butchers or post office.. or the person serving you in McDonalds or Costa etc etc etc......

Do you tip them too - those of you who say you tip the hairdresser? If not, WHY not...? They are all 'serving' you....

I can't believe anyone still tips in 2024! 😆 And especially hairdressers. They are hilariously and breathtakingly overpriced. The prices are so ludicrous these days that for the past 5 years I have cut and coloured my own hair. I will never use a hairdresser again.

Mrsgreen100 · 10/02/2024 20:25

Hair cut and colour is 120 quid can’t even afford that tbh
so no tip from me anymore

CaramelMac · 10/02/2024 20:28

Nothing, we live in Britain where people are paid at least the minimum wage, and as my hairdresser is the ‘top level’ in the salon and well sought after I assume he’s paid more than that.

MoreUniWoes · 10/02/2024 20:34

Chickenkeev · 10/02/2024 18:00

Bin men always get christmas money around here. I wouldn't tip supermarket staff as a rule. There's no logic to it really.

I tip the bin men and supermarket delivery people at Christmas. To be fair, when we go on holiday they always get out and put our bins back which is very welcome!

I used to tip my hairdresser until one time when I put a tenner in his tip tin and said "get yourself a drink" and he responded with "oh no, this is getting me a Gucci watch." I struggle to afford my hair cut and colour sometimes and it just really jarred.

Also, the bill has gone up £15 quid in the last year...

IloveAslan · 10/02/2024 20:37

I'm not in the UK, but didn't think tipping was the norm? I've never heard of anyone tipping a hairdresser here - why would you, they are being paid to do the job?

MouseMinge · 10/02/2024 20:40

I get mine done by a wonderful lady barber and because it's so much cheaper than going to a hairdresser - £15 - I tip her a fiver and still end up getting a really good deal.
