Tipping hairdressers

How much do you tip for a cut and blow dry? Standard cut/ trim, nothing fancy done, not going from very long to very short, no fringe or particular style etc. Hair isn’t thick, curly or difficult to manage

Nothing. She puts the details on the card machine and I pay. She asks for what she wants. But I have an independent hairdresser not someone in a chain. She rents a chair and has her own customers and advertising.

Onesailwait · 10/02/2024 16:36

When I lived in the uk, I rarely tipped the hairdresser, maybe a couple quid to the junior that washed my hair. Now I'm in Canada a minimum of 20% is expected. A few years back, the cost of my cut unexpectedly went up, so I didn't have enough on me to tip the full 20%. When I got home, I received a shitty message from the salon. I hate the tipping culture here.

CuteCillian · 10/02/2024 16:37

I tip my main hairdresser, doing cut/colour etc. but when I go to a blow dry place there isn't really an opportunity to tip.

EarringsandLipstick · 10/02/2024 16:37

marshmallowfinder · 10/02/2024 16:33

Also why the fuck does someone who washes it get a tip? It's their job. I work in a shop and no one tips us.

I know. It's a bit strange. I tip the person who does my waxing too. I guess it's in situations where you've a direct relationship for a service, unlike a shop.

Oh wow! Can I ask what the message from them said?!

God, that's so rude. I hope you never went back.

I don’t tip. She’s a talented professional and I’m not going to patronise her by basically saying she doesn’t charge enough.

I'm pretty sure they won't find it patronising 😂

MiltonNorthern · 10/02/2024 16:39

£5. I know you don't have to but they don't earn a lot and I can afford to give £5 so I like to

Some do earn a lot.
I'll be honest, I find tipping really awkward because I don't want to offend by giving a small amount!

thisoldcity · 10/02/2024 16:40

£5 every time.

EarringsandLipstick · 10/02/2024 16:41

God, that's so rude. I hope you never went back

It is rude. But it's the US / Canadian culture. I had a few awkward moments over the years either visiting or working when I didn't realise I needed to tip or I tipped too little & they just stood there expectantly.

Oddly, visiting Americans here often embrace the much more optional tipping culture & tip very badly!

ditalini · 10/02/2024 16:41

Nothing. If they need to put their prices up to cover costs then that's fine.

Linny81 · 10/02/2024 16:42

10% they always seem to genuinely appreciate it, they’re lovely and like to think if everyone does and it pays for their summer holiday then great!

Onesailwait · 10/02/2024 16:44

@Maireas @whatsitcalledwhen

No, I never went back. Looking back now, I question why I didn't contact them, but I was just so embarrassed. The message was along the lines of ' we noticed you stiffed the stylist. Was the service bad, or are you just cheap ?

Blimey. Harsh.

Caravaggiouch · 10/02/2024 16:46

JMSA · 10/02/2024 16:29

Nothing if I've paid full price.

A generous tip if it's a model cut or whatever.

Same

Maireas · 10/02/2024 16:46

It's a minefield, isn't it? Would only giving £5 on top of £75 be deemed too cheap?
Or do most hairdressers not have that expectation?

Fink · 10/02/2024 16:46

I tip in inverse proportion to the price of the cut/ service, nothing to do with the type of hair. So mostly I go to the Toni & Guy or Vidal Sassoon academies and pay under £10 for a student to cut my hair. I tend to tip about the same again. If I were to go to a normal hairdresser and shell out £££ for a fancy cut, I would probably not leave a tip, I would judge that I had paid more than a fair price already. It annoys me that I have to pay so much for a really basic cut for dc, so I don't tend to tip there.

sunflowerpinks · 10/02/2024 16:51

OneMoreCookieMonster · 10/02/2024 16:25

Min 20% of the service

I bet you're a hairdresser Grin

sunflowerpinks · 10/02/2024 16:53

Nothing at all. Why would she need tipping, she's doing a job the same as everyone else.

That's my view too.

I'd have replied, "I had been unaware that the prices had increased, and was caught short to be able to tip. I had planned on bringing in a tip for her when I was next passing by tomorrow, but since you've decided to leave me an unpleasant, rude message, I won't be. Nor will I ever be coming back."

Absolute cheeky fuckers.

LadyWithLapdog · 10/02/2024 17:05

I don’t tip now that everything is by card, but I take a bar of chocolate or a small box of chocolates. There’s a small tesco right next door, I don’t have to overthink it.

RM2013 · 10/02/2024 17:12

I don’t tip but usually buy a gift or tip at Christmas

ShadowPlaying · 10/02/2024 17:15

I used to give a few quid. Now it's all card payments and £55 for a trim I don't.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 10/02/2024 17:17

I don't. It costs a fortune as it is, and it's the owner who cuts it.
