Tipping hairdressers

How much do you tip for a cut and blow dry? Standard cut/ trim, nothing fancy done, not going from very long to very short, no fringe or particular style etc. Hair isn’t thick, curly or difficult to manage

OP posts:
LittleBoPeepHasLostHerShit · 10/02/2024 17:21

I don't and there is no option to do so either, as far as I have seen.

2chocolateoranges · 10/02/2024 17:23

my hairdresser now is mobile so comes to my home, she doesn’t get a tip.

she previously owned a salon(pre covid) and I didn’t tip her as she owned the salon but I tipped the girl who washed my hair £2.

These girls are normally 15, 16 or 17 on low wages so the tips bump their wages up a bit.

PuppyMonkey · 10/02/2024 17:30

The staff at your kid’s nursery are probably also on low wages @2chocolateoranges so you’ll tip them as well presumably?Grin

CharlotteStreetW1 · 10/02/2024 17:31

My hairdresser is in a salon but has her own card machine so I tell her to make it £55 (the price is £50). She's a great hairdresser.

VimtoEverywhere · 10/02/2024 17:31

I used to tip about £5 but stopped recently when I realised I was already paying £40 for a hair cut thay takes about 45 minutes. I think that's enough

RufustheFactualReindeer · 10/02/2024 17:32

I don’t tip but i do give her a money gift at Christmas

i get my hair cut every 4 weeks and it costs me £50, dhs hair is longer than mine and he gets charged £30..so i really don’t want to part with any more money 😀

Onesailwait · 10/02/2024 17:32

@ReadingSoManyThreads - Honestly, I've thought up so many replies I should have given since but at the time I was just to embarrassed thinking I can never show my face in this little town again they all think I'm cheap😳.

RufustheFactualReindeer · 10/02/2024 17:37

Oh and i have a wet cut 😳

ThinWomansBrain · 10/02/2024 17:37

I go to a social enterprise hairdressers - so you pay what you want.
They have recently introduced a suggested recommended price, but you can still overpay (or underpay).
I usually top it up by around £5 - but it's not a tip exactly, there's no option to tip.

MintyIguana · 10/02/2024 17:42

It's not occurred to me to tip. I just thought the price is the price. Someone mentioned it being a service as opposed to a shop. So, do people also tip for getting their car serviced, for example? I don't have a car. Genuinely interested.

Maireas · 10/02/2024 17:43

No, I never tip the people who do my service or MOT.

BarbieDangerous · 10/02/2024 17:44

I’ve honestly never tippdd my hairdresser, I didn’t even know people did this until I joined MN.

My wash, blow dry and cut costs £25 so it’s not like it’s a fortune. She’s great and I see her at least once a month for different styles so that’s good enough for me tbh

Kalevala · 10/02/2024 17:45

LadyWithLapdog · 10/02/2024 17:05

I don’t tip now that everything is by card, but I take a bar of chocolate or a small box of chocolates. There’s a small tesco right next door, I don’t have to overthink it.

Do you also buy one for the checkout staff member?

The80sThe80s · 10/02/2024 17:46

Nothing

Same!

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 10/02/2024 17:47

If I’m paying £140 for my hair to be done, no.

PatchworkElmer · 10/02/2024 17:47

I normally tip at Christmas but I don’t go mad- normally a tenner and a bottle of fizz. I think they charge a decent amount of money which makes haircuts a luxury item for me.

Motheranddaughter · 10/02/2024 17:47

£20

MixingPlaydough · 10/02/2024 17:48

Motheranddaughter · 10/02/2024 17:47

£20

You tip £20 every time you go? You must be bloody loaded!

Princesspollyyy · 10/02/2024 17:51

Nothing.

I work in healthcare and nobody tips me.

Astrak · 10/02/2024 17:53

My hairdresser is an independent operator in a small rural village. I pay £25 and give a £5 tip. Their cutting staff are excellent and they do the wash themselves, prior to the blow dry.

StarTwirl · 10/02/2024 17:53

Why would you tip a hairdresser.

They charge a set price anyway

I have tipped in the past but not anymore

Not since I was asked if I wanted my hair blow dried then got charged extra for it without being told I would

That really pissed me off

So no more tips after that

I always tip in a restaurant even though that seems pointless but I'd feel so embarrassed and guilty if I didn't and the meal would leave a bad taste in my mouth

CJ4713 · 10/02/2024 17:55

To those that do tip- do you also tip other workers which are even lower paid such as your bin collection people, workers in shops, the carer looking after your grandparents in a carehome???

StarTwirl · 10/02/2024 17:56

If I was rich and went to the top stylist in the UK then I'd tip them loads to keep me on their books and to book me in regularly as required as they'd be booked months in advance

So yes if it's a popular hairdresser who's hard to get an appointment with then yes I'd always tip

Bin men always get christmas money around here. I wouldn't tip supermarket staff as a rule. There's no logic to it really.
