Tipping hairdressers

How much do you tip for a cut and blow dry? Standard cut/ trim, nothing fancy done, not going from very long to very short, no fringe or particular style etc. Hair isn’t thick, curly or difficult to manage

OP posts:
PrincessHoneysuckle · 10/02/2024 20:41

No tip just pay on card via bank transfer

nimski · 10/02/2024 20:41

Nothing, I have to save up for a haircut these days!

FLOWER1982 · 10/02/2024 20:42

Nothing. I feel tight not doing so but she charges enough and is always off on holiday. She owns the salon so I think she does ok.

Fitandfree · 10/02/2024 20:44

It's £27 (NE) and I round up to £30. I'm in 40 mins max. They don't have juniors.

KevinDeBrioche · 10/02/2024 20:50

I don’t usually. She’s the salon owner and sets her own prices, only time I might is if I’m paying cash and have £100 rather than the £95 I’d just say keep it.

spidermonkeys · 10/02/2024 20:50

Our barber used to charge £10 for a kids cut. I always tipped £2. The price has slowly crept up to now £16.50! I don't tip anymore !

Namechangesab · 10/02/2024 20:51

I only really tip where the service I've received has been personal (and good) if that makes sense. So yes to hairdressers and my cleaner and binmen and waiting staff we see all the time and chat to, no to random checkout girls or shop workers.

Pottedpalm · 10/02/2024 20:53

£4, which is 10%.
I have always tipped her; have had the same hairdresser since we were both young 🙂

Stormbornform · 10/02/2024 20:55

£4/£5.

Growlybear83 · 10/02/2024 21:03

I've only been to the hairdresser once in the last 30 years but on the rare occasions I went in the past I always tipped the stylist 10% and the girl who washed my hair £1 - but it would have been worth very much more than it is today! 😆😆

nappysan · 10/02/2024 21:04

Where are these reasonably priced hairdressers you have found?
I pay £90 for a colour at my house every 4 weeks. Always tip £10 or give a bottle of wine.
Am embarrassed to say how much cut is, but only twice a year.
I am really happy with my hair and appreciate his help with this. It’s really convenient that he can come to my place.

£1 for the girl that washed your hair? How patronising, was that for her to buy some sweeties on the way home? 🥴

Growlybear83 · 10/02/2024 22:04

If you had read my post, you would see that was over 30 years ago. £1 was worth rather more than it is now. At that time, it was a reasonable tip.🙄

Growlybear83 · 10/02/2024 22:07

And yes, back then, it was invariably a girl aged around 15 or 16 who washed people's hair in the salon I went to - just like when I had my first Saturday job at 15 and washed peoples hair and swept up the hair from the floor all day.

Sorry I don't agree. 30 years ago I was 16 and even though a £1 coin was worth more back then, it's not a lot more really. Quite an insult I think.

I think it's better if people don't tip and just pay people the price they are being charged. It can be so belittling.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 10/02/2024 22:09

I have my roots and highlighted done for £60 inc a tip - love it! ❤️

A cut (5 mins) and blow dry would add on another £25 - no thanks 🙄 I prefer to leave with a wet head of hair!

Growlybear83 · 10/02/2024 22:13

We'll have to agree to disagree then. £1 tip for the shampooist for five minutes work 30+ years ago wasn't belittling at all, when the minimum wage wasn't even £3 an hour.

sunflowerpinks · 10/02/2024 22:19

Those of you that tip, do you feel that the price charged for the service is too low?

I struggle to see how an additional payment on top of what is charged is necessary or justifiable?

JaneAustensHeroine · 10/02/2024 22:21

I used to tip between £5-£10 before Covid but have stopped tipping now. The prices are expensive enough and I think once you start tipping it becomes expected. Recently got a new hairdresser so determined not to start!

toomanyleggings · 10/02/2024 22:35

I go every eight weeks on the for. 150 quid and she’s self employed. I don’t tip on top

Projectme · 10/02/2024 22:35

Colour, cut and blow dry on long hair is around £90. I tip £10. I'm in his salon for 2+ hours. He makes my hair look amazing so I'm happy to tip.

My aunt was a hairdresser in the 80s and I remember her coming home after a long Saturday and she would upend her handbag...it was full of fivers, tenners and coins...seems there's been a shift to not tip hairdressers anymore!

I have to echo this. Do people that tip feel the prices charged are too low?

They must do surely 🫨

Yes because they are paid a wage! They do get paid for the work they do.

I work in healthcare, the pay is low, it's very long hours and I'm making a difference to people's lives.... yet i don't receive any tips for my work.

MixingPlaydough · 10/02/2024 16:32

Nothing at all. Why would she need tipping, she's doing a job the same as everyone else.

I so agree. DH was in a Starbucks in LA and took a cake to the till. He was asked if he wanted to add a tip. For what exactly?!!

Firecarrier · 10/02/2024 22:45

We shouldn't be 'tipping' anyone in this country it is down right weird.

If they require more money they should charge more money end of.
