Irks me to see mums boasting about "childfree" nights out & "kid free weekends away"

Bridgetjoneski · 05/02/2024 12:13

I just find it very distasteful! I have one or two mum friends on insta & know them in real life. But at least every fortnight they have insta posts up about "kid free" night out with dh or "kid free weekend away". They are quite wealthy & both work full time, I just find it very unsavoury. Tag a dinner your hubby but no need to state the kids absense.
Is this a rising trend or just limited to the pair I know? The latest status tagging the latest dinner out was "not a child in sight"...

Can only hope while OP's here riling up internet strangers, her children are enjoying their #mumfree #breakfrombatshittery time to the full....

@MamaAlwaysknowsbest@MamaAlwaysknowsbest was she posting things like #childfree at the spa because this is what this thread is about.
The whole culture of boasting about being #childless on social media when you leave your kids at home. It's unnecessary..
Noone is begrudging anyone their leisure & socialising time, my pet hate is the need to document online that one is #childfree & #notakidinsight as if they are rats or headlice, some type of infestation to stamp out..
When a simple #datenight #coupletime would suffice..

as someone who gets all the time off you get your perspective is off. For many the child free time IS the treat.

pootlin · 05/02/2024 19:27

OP you’ve written 71 posts basically saying the same thing.

“It’s inappropriate”

“It’s distasteful.”

“Why do they feel the constant need to say childfree?”

This must be the most dragged out thread ever. Poor kids haven’t seen their mum all day, but hey, at least OP isn’t talking about them on social media…

therealcookiemonster · 05/02/2024 19:27

it's funny isn't it... you never see dad's post about kid free time, because that's their default.

tell me @Bridgetjoneski do you feel the same annoyance about the many men who spend the majority of their time 'kid free'

Butterdishy · 05/02/2024 19:28

Capkayser · 05/02/2024 19:23

But babe, words can, and do have deep meanings. Sometimes people use it with meaning, sometimes not. It's always good to have the stuck up people around to analyse this and think and debate about it. I can think of lots of words that have been phased out for this reason. Professions that always end with "man" come to mind.

Well that's why context matters. Frostfree= great quality in a freezer, not so much in the north pole.
Childfree= crucial in a nightclub, concerning in a nursery school.

@mathanxiety

why?!

presumably part of their fun was that you weren’t there and therefore they could do more adult focused stuff! Why begrudge them that?!

I would have wondered why they chose to emphasise that aspect of their fun on nights out.

Why not # playing bridge with good friends?
Why not # whooping it up at so and so's wedding?
Why not # loving every minute of the concert?

It's the emphasis I'm concerned about here, and the implication that children are so unpleasant that their absence needs to be remarked above and instead of any other aspect of the evening

When you're posting a picture of your slightly squiffy self in some venue at night, why hit people over the head with the bleeding obvious - that you've found someone to babysit and your children are not with you on your night out?

mathanxiety · 05/02/2024 19:32

AGoingConcern · 05/02/2024 18:58

The Nazis tried the linguistic trick in the term "Juden frei".

@mathanxiety Did you seriously just try to compare women posting about going out without their kids to nazi slogans? What the hell would make you think that's appropriate?

Perhaps if the OP worked a 40 hour week and wasn't coming to her evenings with her children relaxed from her day of swimming, brunch, whatever else, where she doesn't even have to cook dinner because DH does it after work, then she would feel the need for some child free time more often and would understand why some people use that phrase and stop judging people who work harder than she does.

If everything you see on social media annoys you stop going on there. Comparison is the thief of joy!

People post all kinds of shite on social media. Which is why I got rid 🤣.

Well that's why context matters. Frostfree= great quality in a freezer, not so much in the north pole.
Childfree= crucial in a nightclub, concerning in a nursery school.

The frost is objectionable in 100% of the realistic situations where you'll find a freezer. You're still grasping at straws here.

The word "free" tagged onto any other word implies the prefix is objectionable in an objective sense, independent of context.

Why do you think people need reminding that you've left your children at home and haven't brought them to the nightclub? They're probably capable of working that out for themselves. So what are you really trying to say when you hashtag childfree?

mathanxiety · 05/02/2024 19:41

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 05/02/2024 19:04

Babe, it ain't that deep.

Only those with a stick up their arses are bothered about this.

Language does indeed evolve. The concept of some thing or some place or some person being "X, Y, or Z-free" isn't that new all the same. Dirt-free, hassle-free, interest-free - all come with the implication that you're free of something very unpleasant. The Nazis tried the linguistic trick in the term "Juden frei"

So with this logic, grown adults without children of their own who describe themselves as child-free are describing being free of something unpleasant?

Bingo!

I don't have a "hubby" or go on "dates" though. What would be an acceptable tag if I just actually like having a few hours somewhere without my kids (maybe just walking through town relishing the quiet). Why do we have to be so happy to have them with us all the time as if when they aren't there we are missing a limb? Being able to find joy in moments alone and appreciate why they are so precious is a large factor in good mental health.

Nobody invites you to nightclubs do they?

TheVintageMum · 05/02/2024 19:46

This thread is insanity. Who cares what hashtag someone uses on social media to describe their weekend or night away without their children? And no the term childfree is in no way comparable to Nazi propaganda #ridiculous. 🙄

@mathanxiety precisely. They are implying negative connotations towards their children by using #childfree to highlight what should be a nice night out with friends or dp. There is absolutely no reason to mention their children especially in such a negative #notakidinsight way.
