Grandmother killed by 2 XL bullies whilst apparently separating fighting bully pups.

Longer jail sentences, minimum of 5 years for owners of dogs that kill people for not controlling them.

Aibu?

I'd apply the same rule to cars too. All killing machines

I see your point but nobody actually needs an XL bully. Cars are needed to get around and there are millions of them.

I understand if you cause death y dangerous driving or under the influence there are jail terms.

Although that's not the point of this thread you could make a thread about that ?

The owner is probably still defending himself and seeing himself as the victim in all of this. The owners have exposed their child to deep trauma.

soupfiend · 05/02/2024 08:49

The poster is blaming the owner (quite rightly) not the victim. Read the post

I did, the pp said the woman tried to separate the fighting puppies and they turned on her, as any dog would do.

Yes I do think jail would be reasonable seeing as the breed is now banned. However I’m a little stuck in this case. The young boys mother and grandmother have now passed away. Where will he go if his father goes to jail. Such as shame for the poor boy.

The aunt who was in the story?

ThePeaAndThePrincess · 05/02/2024 09:01

This is why the "ban" is insufficient: most of these attacks happen either in people's homes or when these dogs escape from someone's property, when they would not be muzzled even if the owner was following the rules. The law should be that all of them are seized and put to sleep. If they are dangerous enough to ban then they are not suitable to keep as pets at all.

whitewallsoutside · 05/02/2024 09:02

I agree OP. If you knowingly keep dangerous and out of control dogs and they hurt or kill someone, you should face a significant prison sentence.

Without wanting to comment on the specifics of the case (no one yet knows what happened) I don't understand why anyone would want to keep a pet which was aggressive and capable of killing, let alone why you'd do that if there were kids in the house.

All dogs that a toddler could not beat in a fight should be put in grave. No exceptions.

This.

And I say that as an owner of reportedly one of the most aggressive breeds of dog - a dachshund.

Despite ranking high in biting statistics, it ranks extremely low in death statistics (and in a recent ish case where a dachshund was involved in the death of a dog walker, the dachshund was eventually released to the owners and not found to be at fault).

My sole criteria for choosing a breed was that I must be able to overpower it if required.

They’re animals, you can’t possibly rationalise with them. If they perceive a threat there is a risk they will respond to neutralise the threat in the most effective way they are able - no matter how trained they are, most average dog owners can’t train out a fear response.

Velvian · 05/02/2024 09:06

I think this is a man problem too. I wonder how many women and children live with XL Bullies and other aggressive/inappropriate dogs against their wishes.

I think coercion and control are commonplace in families. It is also very common on threads here to see that men are actively blocking women from keeping their children safe.

PaulCostinRIP · 05/02/2024 09:11

According to one family member the puppies were playing and getting rough and the son told the grandmother to separate them using a broom and that's when both of the adult dogs intervened and attacked her.

So whilst there are mitigating factors for the dogs to believe they were protecting the puppies the fact is that the son was utterly clueless in the raising of the puppies and not being able to control the adult dogs under these circumstances.

The dogs that attacked are also victims as they should not have been in the care of someone who has poor knowledge of dog behaviour.

I wonder what will happen to the puppies.

I think this is a man problem too.

Just entirely, he's reported to have refused to register and neuter the dogs, on the gtounds that no one's telling HIM what to do with his dogs.

His dogs are dead now.

No idea what will happen to the puppies but correctly the dogs that killed were shot.

You have a point, but there are still a lot of women, many with children, who own & breed these dogs outside of the control of a man.

They seem to be more the 'my dog wouldn't hurt a fly' mentality.

From the times- who on earth hears screaming and doesn't do anything about it?

Xyz , 38, who lives in a property behind the address where the attack occurred, said she had been in the garden at the time. “It was all quiet and then we heard dogs barking, and then we heard someone screaming,” she said. “It seemed like the screaming of a child. That went on for about ten minutes. We went back in after a while because it sounded horrific.”

If your house backed on to this absolute moron and his dangerous dogs would you be popping round to see what all the screaming was about?

No, but I’d be calling the police.

PictureALadybird · 05/02/2024 09:19

It’s awful.

There shouldn’t be an exemption for these dogs at all; they all need rounding up and putting down.

OpieMo · 05/02/2024 09:23

It's horrifying. People need to be far more educated on things like this. I get that you can't prevent a random attack on the street if you're going about your business, but personally hell would freeze over before I ever willingly entered a home with one of these animals present. If we are out and we come across one, we immediately and quietly leave.

I saw that the woman was told to break up puppy fights with a broom ! I mean that is the mentally of the "owner" honest to god this woman died because of feckless greedy people I'm assuming it was her childs dogs.

Ravensky · 05/02/2024 09:27

Apparently according to one enlightened Facebook post, the woman was "stupid" and it was clearly her fault she'd been savaged to death by two dogs that shouldn't exist.

That's the point that pisses me off when twats spout "it's the owner not the breeeeeed". These dogs shouldn't fucking exist. You're an absolute thick cock if you are stupid enough to breed/own one of these dogs as a fucking pet as you clearly have no reading/cognitive ability. If you had any fucking sense you would have been well aware these dogs are strongly related to Pitbulls which have been banned for years. Quite simply all you need to fucking do is ask yourself why they are a banned breed and don't fucking get a bastard carbon copy.

Just thick twats. All of them, the owners and the breeders. Thick as fuck.

I was thinking this too - what fuckwits. Presumably the same type who would tut and turn up the volume on the tv if they heard screams of a woman being attacked nearby. And she obviously didn’t see anything odd with their response to be telling reporters! Obv low IQ

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/02/2024 09:33

I’m a lifelong dog lover but really, it’s high time all these dogs were PTS - no ifs, buts or arguments.
And there should be really severe penalties for anyone still keeping them, or trying to import or breed from them.

People who keep these dogs are too often anti-social (or outright thug) types anyway so (as in this case) unlikely to comply with any rules unless they’re really stringently enforced.
The law needs Teeth as powerful as those of the dogs!

NuffSaidSam · 05/02/2024 09:16

I think it highlights the "not my problem, keep your nose out" camp of thinking. However if they was being attached, they would want someone to do something about their screams.

So you see the best of the human race ( people who rushed in to help risking life) with the worst ( people who listened to her screams then went back inside after ten minutes as it was upsetting them.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 05/02/2024 09:37

I saw the victims daughter interviewed and she said that her sister had died (I think the owner was her son - or maybe a son in law?). Either way, he had the ‘dont want people to tell him what to do with his dogs’ attitude and seems to be breeding them (why else would he have all those pups?

so they are a banned breed. Were these licenced (how do you get a licence anyway)?

Troll banned

HoneyButterPopcorn · 05/02/2024 09:39

Unless that was the norm. The owner looks (well I know you can’t tell from a photo) like the type who would punch you on the nose for asking him to move his car from your drive.

Maybe they were the neighbours from hell’ with their pack of aggressive dogs, so noone wanted to go over and ask if everyone was ok?

HoneyButterPopcorn · 05/02/2024 09:41

Just thinking - dogs that kids generally don’t kill their owners (is that right?). I’m just thinking if the cases that have been in the news when it’s been children, elderly family/neighbours, other dog owners who have tried to stop the dogs eating their own pets…
