Grandmother killed by 2 XL bullies whilst apparently separating fighting bully pups.

Longer jail sentences, minimum of 5 years for owners of dogs that kill people for not controlling them.

Interesting video - this dog was not in aggressive mode (it was in "fun" mode, and it was very comfortable with its owner manipulating it) and it was comparatively easy - though not totally straightforward - to insert the break stick - now imagine doing that with a dog twice the size (XLs are BIG), intensely focussed on the victim, twice as strong (at least) as you are and running and shaking its prey at the same time.

"Stretching" that dog out, inserting and using the break stick, wouldn't be anywhere near as easy.

I have seen a nasty fight involving a staffie. It was many years ago - the dog didn't just hold on - it rolled, like an alligator - and ripped a lump out of the other dog. I have never forgotten it. It was horrendous. (And I speak as someone who has had 4 staffies and loves the breed, though I would never have another as there are too many bad breeders around)

Those were my thoughts - the XL bullies are so much bigger, and when they're in killing mode, I can't imagine anyone being able to do that.

You mention the ''Rolling like an Alligator...''
there is a type of Pit /Staffie that has been selected for called 'Gators' because of this hideous trait.

What is wrong with people who create these monstrous mutts.

They have to be deeply insecure and lacking in some way to want to see humans and animals hurt.

"Much sought after".

It goes from bad to worse, doesn't it?

Iam4eels · 11/02/2024 18:51

My little dog was once attacked by a staffie-XL cross and it was attempting to do that roll in order to flip her over, presumably in order to get access to her softer parts like her belly and throat. She got away with relatively minor injuries but it could have been so much worse. It took two adults to prise it's jaws open wide enough for me to pull my dog free and it had been forcibly held down as it tried to pursue us. One of the most awful parts of the attack was that there was no prior warning and no signs of aggression. It jogged up to us and grabbed my dog in one fluid motion - no growling, no sniffing around and no hesitation, just rapid approach and bite.

Poniesandpigs · 11/02/2024 19:19

@Iam4eels that’s because they are bred to give nothing away as well as not giving into any appeasement signals given by other dogs.

After all a fighting dog who gives up as soon as the opponent cries is as good as useless. Usually they get excited by the screams hence why it goes on and on.

Ive been involved in far too many of these incidents (part and parcel of my
job sadly) It’s always the same type of dogs owned by the same stupid owners.

Iam4eels · 11/02/2024 20:16

Oh god, the screaming. I was physically sick once we got away, that screaming was the most horrific sound I've ever heard.

Emotionalsupportviper · 12/02/2024 10:16

A dog fight - even without any screaming from an injured dog - is fecking terrifying! It really is.

The noise, the snarling, not being able to grab the dogs because it is a running fight, or grabbing the dogs and getting bitten because they aren't even aware that it's not the other dog they have hold of.

I do hope your little dog was ok eels

It is terrifying!! Our dog was pinned to the floor and attacked by 2 whippets. The owner just stood there screaming. DH had to kick both dogs hard to get them off.
I appreciate however if it had been 2 XL’s that attacked he would’ve had no chance!!

Emotionalsupportviper · 14/02/2024 10:13

So sorry @Mumof2NDers

Whippets are usually very gentle, but some have a strong prey instinct, and particularly if they are rescue dogs and have been raced or coursed, sometimes attack small dogs/ cats.

A friend had a rescue greyhound and always had to have him muzzled outside the home because of this. She has had other rescues before and since with no problem, but this particular one was very prey-driven. I hope your dog recovered well.

oakleaffy · 14/02/2024 15:33

@Mumof2NDers They were probably Lurchers- A purebred Whippet is normally very passive, ones who do lure coursing would be banned for showing aggression.
Purebred Whippets are very small, but it’s common for people to calla larger smooth haired Lurcher “ A whippet “ when the drives are very different.
My own Whippet was targeted by a nasty large so called Whippet but it was a Lurcher- and it’s owner was hopeless! It was twice the size of mine.
I hope your poor dog was ok.
