Why am I being asked by the NHS if my 8 month old baby 'still identifies as the gender assigned at birth?'

We had a medical concern with our 8 month old baby, so I rang 111 for advice, we got directed to a lovely nurse to ask further questions, all going well until she asked....

'Does she identify as the gender assigned at birth?'

Oh wait a minute, let me just ASK her..

Surely parents wouldn't have made that decision to 'change the gender' of their baby?

What is going on, I understand the question may need to be asked for older teenagers/adults but a baby?!?!

Aibu to feel a bit annoyed and confused?

You are not being unreasonable but presumably it’s a standard question on a form for everyone. The GP surgery asked me the other day if I had permission to speak on behalf of the patient. I pointed out he was 4 and they relented.

Alcyoneus · 02/02/2024 20:47

Because they have been captured by Marxist loons and dodgy child groomers who pretend to champion inclusivity but basically have sinister aims. And all this lunacy is paid for the by the taxpayer. Madness.

PotatoPrimo · 02/02/2024 20:47

It’s nuts a health service does not ask about it’s patients sex.
What could possibly go wrong? Erm.. lots!

Changingplace · 02/02/2024 20:47

I’d lose my shit at this, she wasn’t assigned a gender her sex was observed, the NHS needs to sort this nonsense out.

I would complain about this. Incredibly inappropriate.

WTF!!

ThankGoditsChristmas · 02/02/2024 20:49

I work for the NHS and we have to ask pregnant "women" if they identify as male or female.

Riverlee · 02/02/2024 20:49

I would probably reply with a sarcastic reply ‘ I’ll just ask my dc that, shall I?’

Why is it a standard question though? Why has this become so enshrined within a medical environment?

justteanbiscuits · 02/02/2024 20:49

Because it's a one size fits all form. They ask the same questions for everyone. If you think about how many people each person must speak to each day, it's so much easier for them to just ask all the questions.

Catza · 02/02/2024 20:50

You may have been caller number 1570 on her 13h shift. Cut her some slack

bakewellbride · 02/02/2024 20:51

Sometimes they literally have to ask these questions as crazy or stupid as it is. God knows why. I had an antenatal appt once and the blood test guy ran through some questions on the form and one of them was 'are you aware that you're pregnant and that this is a pregnancy related blood test?' Ffs yes!

Isn’t that clearly conflating sex with gender? And how does it matter? If you’re pregnant the medical care you need is connected to the fact you’re going to have a baby than your gender beliefs.

fedupandstuck · 02/02/2024 20:54

I think my response would be "can you explain what you mean by that and how it is relevant to the medical assessment of my baby?"

DefendingPan · 02/02/2024 20:59

Its called ideological capture

Those damn Marxists...

The Communist Party is the only political party with a coherent political analysis of sex and gender. Gender as an ideological construct should not be confused or conflated with the material reality of biological sex. Gender is the vehicle through which misogyny is enacted and normalised. Gender identity ideology is well- suited to the needs of the capitalist class, focusing as it does on individual as opposed to collective rights, enabling and supporting the super-exploitation of women.

PotatoPrimo · 02/02/2024 21:02

This has reminded me that there was new Public Sector Equality Duty guidance issues recently. Any public body that fails to record the Protected Characteristics of the Equality Act is breaching the duty. It also states:

Authorities should take care to undertake their assessment by reference to the protected characteristics set out in the act. They should not use concepts such as gender or gender identity, which are not encoded in the act and can be understood in different ways.

Because it's a pro forma. Do you get agitated by questions about religion or level of education?

No. Wonder why not?🙄

I needed a laugh. Thank you, OP!

Are these questions routinely asked when accessing healthcare? I think not.

What religion does your baby believe in or what educational level are they at would be seen to be ridiculous questions for an 8 month old baby
