For letting 18 year old son lay on my lap

Last night I was on the sofa with my 5 year old ds, he was tired and was dozing off. My 18 year old ds was the other side of me and put a blanket under his head and laid it on my lap (he wasn't feeling well for context). He husband walked in and said "your too old for that" to my ds. He claims its "fucking weird" for an 18 year old to lay his head on his mums lap. He is autistic and felt ill. Is he right?

I read somewhere how much teens still need physical affection but don’t always realise it, so you’re meant to hug them til they push you away. I do this and it totally works - sometimes I get a. “Urgh mum get off”, sometimes they tolerate it briefly and other times they hug me back for a while. It’s a bit like playing roulette 😂

DS got a bit tipsy on a work night out and came home and fell asleep cuddled up to his Dad on the sofa. He looked like a 6ft 4 baby sloth hanging on for dear life.

Your husband is completely in the wrong, I’m glad your DS has at least one parent who cuddles up to him.

Shopper727 · 01/02/2024 08:02

As a mum of 4 boys (eldest 2 22& 18) they all cuddle me my older son has cried on me a few times and my 18 year old is so cuddly: you’re their mum ffs why can’t you be affectionate with your kids and vice versa
It’s your husband that’s got the issues imo
hope he didn’t make your son feel bad

Huh me and my siblings are in our 30s and we still cuddle up to watch films etc. And all my kids still love there cuddles even tho one is a 13 boy lol. Nothing like cuddles with your mum or fam

tsmainsqueeze · 01/02/2024 08:07

You are very lucky that you get to cuddle your 18 year old son , my 2 older than your sons would be welcome for a cuddle any time , i am quite jealous actually !
Show your husband this thread , he needs to apologise .

DS 17 has taken to wanting to watch half hour of TV or so at around 10pm after studying and just before bed. He lolls over me and the sofa, and we chat, watching mindless TV. Part of me would much rather be heading to bed, but the bigger part of me knows this is such a short-lived period of his last year of school and I love the closeness.

Yes your husband is weird. Your son is allowed to have a cuddle with mum, the fact he’s autistic means there’s more sensory seeking (especially when ill) as well. One of my autistic children isn’t one for cuddles, but when ill or upset constantly presses himself into me for comfort. As parents we are their safe spaces no matter what their age.

Dweetfidilove · 01/02/2024 08:27

Take it affection was in short supply in his family.

Did you miss the part where the op said her son was autistic?

I have a 17 year old and a 19 year old. Both still have cuddles regularly, both would get into bed with us for a chat and a hug, both say “love you” to us when ending a call even if their mates are there. It’s often the case that all four of us will watch a movie on the sofa and snuggle up (together with the dog and two cats!) Your DH is being a dick.

Icouldbehappy · 01/02/2024 08:40

My 15 year old DS loves cuddling with me and we’ll get all cosy on the couch, with blankets and a teddy or two.
The same boy has a death stare like Medusa and a sharper tongue than any MIL 😂

(not suggesting for a minute that all MILs are like that! It’s just a lighthearted reference to the plant known as mother-in-law’s tongue!)

You’re somewhat missing the point, we’ve already established her husband is being an unsympathetic dick here. Suggesting the op is turning her autistic son into a ‘man child’ isn’t much better.

I like the sound of him!

My 18 year old son likes to sit on the sofa between us and stretch out so one of us gets his head and the other has his legs draped over them. I cherish it. Your husband is a dick.

This made me smile, hope your baby sloth had a good sleep!

Just bizarre. An autistic, unwell child gets a cuddle and he's going to be a selfish pathetic man child? Sure.

Head on lap- totally fine. Sitting on lap- weird.

For good reason though. Sitting on lap - uncomfortable and too heavy.
