.... to dislike fashion and 'femininity'?

AnnaSewell · 28/01/2024 09:56

This is prompted by having to buy a new sweater.

I dislike shopping for clothes, because I like plain comfortable clothing in dark/subdued/neutral colours. These things are not easy to find and the search for them is troublesome.

I like natural fibres and garments that have pockets. I dislike most floral designs and patterns, as well as fussy ornamentation. I don't like low necks or high hemlines.

I do not wish to be 'pretty'. I don't want to wear shoes that hurt my feet, in which it would be hard to walk or run.

I dislike wearing make-up and the thought of having to blow-dry/style my hair/have it cut regularly depresses me beyond measure. I change clothes, and bathe regularly. My morning routine consists of combing my hair and cleaning my teeth.

I don't remove body hair about from using tweezers if a single hair has appeared on my neck or chin.

I have a range of acceptable clothes for work and also some items that will do well enough for more formal occasions - weddings, funerals, celebrations.

There is a sort of pleasure in finding the right garments, but then I am happy to wear these same things again and again. (It is horrible when these items wear out, because it is hard to find exact replacements.)

Hours of time and a great deal of money is saved, this way. So I am pretty comfortable with these choices.

Does anyone out there make similar choices?

I have to say I hate shopping for clothes but not because I like plain subdued colours. I’m the opposite - I like colourful prints. Maybe we live very far away from each other but EVERYTHING I find in shops these days is plain sake and subdued and it’s all baggy too, all about big jumpers and joggers. I’m surprised you can’t find clothes you like OP, I see nothing but subdued colours. I now mostly turn to charity shops or Vinted just to find something that’s in my style

CoalCraft · 28/01/2024 10:15

I'm the same. I never wear makeup, don't do anything with my hair (just wash and brush it), rarely buy clothes, value comfort over looks. I do shave though.

I'd say it's a good attitude to have, if only because it saves me a lot of time and money compared to a lot of other women I know.

You don’t clean your face on a morning?

I think it’s absolutely fine not to be traditionally feminine but I think the fact that just thinking of having your hair trimmed makes you “depressed beyond measure” is not normal or healthy, and something you should explore.

Having to go to a hairdresser with the time wasting and chit chat makes me feel similarly. I think it's perfectly normal to feel depressed at the thought of that. I go to the barber five weekly and that's fine 🙂.

Petrine · 28/01/2024 10:16

Do whatever you want OP. It makes absolutely no difference to anyone else... no-one cares what you do.

GalileoHumpkins · 28/01/2024 10:16

Girl, wash your face. Even if it's just with water to remove sleep from your eyes.
Wear what you want, be as hairy as you want but don't be a dick about women that make different choices to you.

SweetFemaleAttitude · 28/01/2024 10:16

Why bother combing your hair OP? or plucking your chin hair?

You don't sound unfeminine. You just sound boring and lazy.

I don't think many people practice femininity as you perceive it.

For example, having a hairstyle is not solely feminine. Men do it too.

OMG you're just so quirky op.

pastypirate · 28/01/2024 10:16

What are you asking? I thought the post was about where to find plain unfussy clothes. I was about to recommended Uniqlo. Is that what you wanted?

Yanbu to allege you have saved money I don't see how you have? The money I spend on the salon etc is a choice.

TeachesOfPeaches · 28/01/2024 10:17

Try Uniqlo or Cos as that's literally all they sell

Justifiedcheese · 28/01/2024 10:17

I like fun clothes ( Run and Fly, logo hoodies) but not fashionable ones. They rarely suit me and yy re shoes. Ouch

Sparklesocks · 28/01/2024 10:13

I don’t see why it would be an issue. Live the life you like. Just like women who prefer more feminine clothing/beauty treatments should too. There’s no right or wrong way.

There aren't enough non feminine clothes to fit women. I'm lucky that men's fit me fine but the average woman is a different shape to a man.

WandaWonder · 28/01/2024 10:18

I don't mean there is no point to your thread but what is your question? What specifically are you ''asking' as such?

Isn’t it obvious to you when you’re out and about that the majority of women are similar to you? Most of us don’t have elaborate, high maintenance hair or totter around on heels. Most women I see are in fairly identikit outfits, mostly based round jeans or trousers and with trainers or boots. I have four pairs of the same jeans in different washes, because I value comfort and a good fit, and also multiples of the same jumper in different colours. I detest shopping for clothes, but I do it when needed. But at the same time, I do wear makeup, enjoy a dress on a suitable occasion, and love good shoes (just not heels). Everyone is different and it’s all a mix and match according to preference. None is right or wrong.

But I do think you are odd for not realising that you aren’t odd in your choices.

But that’s not what makes the OP ‘depressed beyond measure’ (although I don’t think being miserable at the thought of speaking to another human is healthy either). It’s the thought of having a haircut plunges her into concerning levels of unhappiness.

Moier · 28/01/2024 10:20

We can't all be the same or we would be bah-ing.
But there is a wonderful feeling l get having my morning shower and washing my hair.
Basic hygiene isn't a chore.
You seem in one way not to care about your appearance yet you are bothered about the odd facial hair?.

Each to their own is what l say..
But I'm 65 and love my self care l give myself.
Pedicures.
Face masks.
Manicures.
Styling hair.
Body scrubs and moisture etc etc.

I’m sorry but I’m not sure what that’s got to do with my post specifically.

mynameiscalypso · 28/01/2024 10:20

The Edit section of Primark has lots of neutral clothes at the moment, some of which are in quite nice fabrics. I dress very much like you. I don't find it hard to find nice clothes at all. There's loads of neutral/black/navy blue stuff in the shops. I wear it because I prefer it to patterns not because I think I'm 'different'.

Sudsywaters · 28/01/2024 10:20

I don't do anything where I could be accused of trying to look attractive. My hygiene is good but I don't do skincare, hairstyles. I buy the cheapest possible specs even though they rarely suit.

I used to actually like clothes back in the 1980s but I don't see clothes i like these days.

SweetFemaleAttitude · 28/01/2024 10:21

What? Where are you going for your clothes for goodness sake?

What do you class as non feminine pray tell?

jeans, joggers, hoodies, tracksuits, pants suits?

this thread is bloody bizarre.

Last time I went into Primark it was all comfort wear, dark joggers baggy jumpers etc.

Like PP I spend ages poring over Vinted for colourful or interesting clothes. Most of the clothes I see anywhere are plain and boring as. Surprised some people have trouble finding them!

Poudretteite · 28/01/2024 10:22

Uniqlo, H&M, Muji, Primark, M&S, Asos, French Connection, Zara, and Benetton, off the top of my head.

Actually there's not a single shop I can think of where you can't buy plain basic clothes in dark colours.

I honestly have no idea how you're finding it difficult because my wardrobe is full of basics and I never have any issue.

Try Googling the specific items you're looking for, ie Black long-sleeved shirt, then go on Shopping and there will be different options to choose from.

Accused?

I will say it again. This thread is bonkers.
