Homeoffice fees

Dp is on limited leave to remain and we are so upset at what it's going to cost to renew for another 2.5 years. It's in the region of £4500. We both feel like our lives are wrecked and I feel like there is no point in my life anymore. I'm on zero hour contract as I'm unwell due to autism/adhd plus other conditions I can't work more hours and dp is full-time minimum wage we are not entitled to any benefits.
On top of all of this dp has dependants although mostly grown up in his home country who put immense pressure on him to help financially due to poor earnings.
I don't know what to do about this situation but I feel like checking out of my life but I feel so bad for dp who is a very good person.

Yes, I do think he costs that given the resources that we all pay for that he has been using for 8 years. And he overstayed, you seem to downplay that.

Grilledsquid · 29/01/2024 18:04

You shouldn't need a solicitor necessarily for renewals tbf

Slightest mistake they will reject it and we will lose the £1048 application fee it's a very hostile process.

I don't downplay it but what's done is done.
There is no way he will ever in his lifetime cost them that they are greedy.

Hostile or robust? Iirc you paid a solicitor to appeal his deportation. How much of the 10k have you had to fund ? And at what cost to your own wellbeing.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 29/01/2024 18:12

That's £1k / year... not sure why he can't save this money if he puts so much emphasis on his families health care and general upkeep.

Tattletwat · 29/01/2024 18:13

You seem to resent him paying NI, you seem to resent paying his fees, you seem to resent the NHS. But strangely you don't resent him sending money home.

This is part of deal when you got with him these immigration fees.

There is the other choice seeing as you resent this country so much.

Zanatdy · 29/01/2024 18:13

Lucky2shoes · 29/01/2024 17:37

You have to add on £1048 homeoffice application fee plus £840 solicitors fees the £2600 is the nhs surcharge

IHS surcharge is also going to double this year. I’m not sure if you’ve got that factored in. Sorry if not, but better to be aware. Do you need a solicitor? If just renewing?

I could say both I guess but it's totally unfair for them to force people apart it's surely against human rights

Hence why he needs to send at least some money.
Also over 10 year route this government will be getting over £10.000 off my dp and it will be even more if they keep putting it up. Do you think my dp will cost them that much to have in this country plus his NI contributions it makes me feel sick thinking about it.

Do you have any idea how much more than that £10k it will cost to have him live in the UK over that period of time?

To be a net contributor, he’ll have to pay about £2.5m in taxes over the course of 40 years.

I’m not British, don’t live there, have no desire to (love my EU passport, thanks very much), so don’t have any skin in the argument about immigration and the UK, but surely you can see that it’s not in a country’s best interest to welcome low-paid, low-skill economic migrants, especially when the UK has a staggering 13% of youth who are economically inactive?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/01/2024 18:14

Lucky2shoes · 29/01/2024 17:25

This ignorance is due to an underlying resentment for immigration sorry I had to say it

That would be a shame, since a great deal in the UK relies on the countless decent immigrants we're happy to welcome
It's probably fair to say, though, that many of us favour those who respect our rules and have valued skills to offer - neither of which, by your own account, apply to DP

Good luck with immigration however, if you hope to persuade them with a claims about people being "nasty" and "not understanding" or that it's just not faaaaiiiir... oddly enough those with experience have heard all these things before

murasaki · 29/01/2024 18:16

Every time he steps out of your home he is using tax payer funded resources. As am I. You can't deny that. 10k over 8 years is bloody cheap given his tax and NI will be tiny amounts.

LIZS · 29/01/2024 18:11

We quite literally have "hostile environment policy". Think what you want about OPs dp, but it is absolutely is hostile, by name and nature.

SportMum1982 · 29/01/2024 18:16

Yes life is getting more expensive. He could have definitely had his youngest here, his daughter. Got her out of Pakistan and got her a British education. Even the boys could have made of their lives here. It’s ridiculous he’s sending all that money back.

That's not my intention I'm solely focused on me and him not what anybody else thinks.

You don't have to meet the income requirements on 10 year route

Glad to hear it - see my other comment re IHS surcharge increasing. Make sure you’re aware and do check the cost regularly. I do think he needs to just say look I’ll be coming home if I don’t have this money together

We are aware I've already factored it in however by the time his renewal comes around the greedy homeoffice will have most likely increased it again.

I think to call it a breach of human rights when you are talking about wanting your boyfriend to be able to live here permanently and him potentially not being able to due to lack of funds (despite sending £400 per month to his family) shows a lack of understanding of what constitutes human rights. The term shouldn't be bandied about lightly.

Coka · 29/01/2024 18:24

Save some money and dont use a solicitor, if u join re-unite families uk on fb there are a lot of people with good knowledge and will help with ur application. Sadly there a lot of families like yours currently struggling with the ever increasing fees

whatsitcalledwhen · 29/01/2024 18:26

And OP I'm sorry if my messages have sounded harsh. I just feel you are sacrificing so much for a relationship that is bringing so many issues to your door when it sounds like you've already had a really tough time.

MissusKay · 29/01/2024 18:27

He was an over stayer - of course the fees are going to be high. It's not something the government wants to encourage!

Well I'm like thousands of others in the country it's not unique to me because I'm with my dp and have taken on his situation.
The government are pissing all over our own

These fees apply to people who didn't overstay it doesn't matter if you abided by the rules or not the homeoffice are still out to milk you dry
