Homeoffice fees

Dp is on limited leave to remain and we are so upset at what it's going to cost to renew for another 2.5 years. It's in the region of £4500. We both feel like our lives are wrecked and I feel like there is no point in my life anymore. I'm on zero hour contract as I'm unwell due to autism/adhd plus other conditions I can't work more hours and dp is full-time minimum wage we are not entitled to any benefits.
On top of all of this dp has dependants although mostly grown up in his home country who put immense pressure on him to help financially due to poor earnings.
I don't know what to do about this situation but I feel like checking out of my life but I feel so bad for dp who is a very good person.

I don't expect the immigration system to be an easy one but the homeoffice are taking advantage.

But OP you've said that the cost of the home office fees will leave you destitute. But he's spending £400 a month on sending money home.

You have the money to cover the fees (it would take less than a year to save for them if he stopped sending money home) but he can't do that and continue sending money home.

Other people might spend that £400 on something frivolous and he isn't, I understand that, but that doesn't change the fact you can afford the fees. Just not if he continues to spend £400 elsewhere each month.

So my point is - how are they taking advantage of you when you can afford the cost, just not if he continues sending so much money to family?

SportMum1982 · 29/01/2024 17:17

Brick wall - head - banging. Mate you ain’t going to leave him.

his family are taking you/him for a ride, yes granted things can get expensive but trust me £400 is a lot of money in Pakistan.

Bring the 15 year old girl here tell him, and he can have a better quality of life.

~£4k every 2.5 years. They most certainly are taking advantage. They make something like 800% profit on visa processing. Whether op or anyone else couldn't technically afford it, makes it no less of cruel a rip off.

One thing for sure here is that the Homeoffice are definitely NOT taking advantage.

Do you think its okay to make people pay Ni from wages plus £2600 on each visa renewal it keeps going up as well by a good 62%

Sorry there is alot of ignorance on here

OP posts:

This ignorance is due to an underlying resentment for immigration sorry I had to say it

With all due respect to posters suggesting he is using me and will do this and that I am the one that's spent time with him and know him it isn't easy to judge somebody's character from a keyboard and I mean that in the kindest way.

An awful lot of people spend decades in financially abusive relationships.

It's when the money runs out or a significant major event happens that they see the relationship for what it is.

I wish for you not to be in this situation... I really do. Even though the information you give suggest otherwise.

From what I've heard Pakistan is getting more expensive and there is no minmum wage enforced like here and people are earning pitiful amounts like £80 a month in some cases there also appears to be a lack of opportunity.

You have to add on £1048 homeoffice application fee plus £840 solicitors fees the £2600 is the nhs surcharge

Heard from your p perhaps? Cost of living is likely to be lower than UK.

Lucky2shoes · 29/01/2024 17:38

Plus biometrics enrollment at £140
He's paying to use it through his wages.

Its lower but high for people making between £80 and 250 a month.

He's on minimum wage, so is paying barely anything in NI , tax etc. He uses roads, street lighting, the mere existence of the NHS even if he has to pay a tiny surcharge, parks, police, society in general. He is not covering his costs, so the HO is most certainly not taking advantage. They are reasonably asking him to pay up, or leave. Which given he has broken their rules and overstayed is overly generous in my book.

Coka · 29/01/2024 17:47

So is it his children he is sending money back to? If thats the case then obv he cannot just stop payments. He might have to do his best to lower them to the minimum though and let his family know it is temporary and a last resort or he wont be able to stay.

I feel like people think so little of him for been on minmum wage but these minimum wage jobs should not be frowned upon somebody has to do them and they can carry alot of responsibility these jobs are essential like many higher paid.

It was £18.600 but its gone up loads

I’m not sure is it’s different for 10yr route but you know the amount the spouse earns is increasingly a lot this year? Though maybe won’t apply if in the system

whatsitcalledwhen · 29/01/2024 17:56

OP he can either continue sending £400 a month home or he can put the money towards the fees. The two are mutually exclusive, you can't afford to do both on your income.

So he has to make a choice. Do you and him understand that the choice is yours (both of you) but needs to made now as there's not more time to play with and the rules are what they are?

You don't have to meet the income requirements on 10 year route

Still better than a country where no cash means no treatment.

You shouldn't need a solicitor necessarily for renewals tbf

Hence why he needs to send at least some money.
Also over 10 year route this government will be getting over £10.000 off my dp and it will be even more if they keep putting it up. Do you think my dp will cost them that much to have in this country plus his NI contributions it makes me feel sick thinking about it.

We have even wondered if its worth him staying here as we can't live a normal life with these fees hanging over us they will force him out which I know won't gather empathy from alot of people in the uk.
