To be sick of vapes everywhere

MaloneMeadow · 25/01/2024 20:43

I can’t seem to go anywhere these days without a white cloud of disgusting candy flavoured vapour being blown in my face. It’s gotten to a point where I truly believe that it’s worse than smoking - at least most smokers are well aware that it’s an anti-social behaviour and do it away from other people, and outdoors! With vapers there seem to be absolutely no boundaries or thought that not everyone wants to be covered in their chemical smoke.

Absolutely horrible habit that’s catching on to far too many young children. A ban can’t come soon enough - even my 19 year old DD is sick of her friends being addicted to them. They’re like dummies in some cases, never out of their mouths!

Not true.

a family friend’s daughter just buried her husband (aged 30) and heart attack brought on by vaping was the cause of death.

honestly I’d not thank you for a vape over a cigarette.

How many people have died as a direct result of vaping over those who have died as a direct result of smoking.
Do you have any stats on this?

SUCH an arsehole comment!

YANBU OP. They are revolting and a single use plastic disaster. When we are all being encouraged to reduce our single plastic, when small businesses are doing their best to help, when volunteers spend their weekends on beaches clearing the fucking things up, it's outrageous that plastic vapes are legal.

It wasn’t my post, but I can’t see why it’s an ‘arsehole comment’. I think you’re being unpleasantly over-dramatic.

As for plastics, beaches are strewn with plastic bottles, packets, tops and lids. Disposable vapes are just one of millions of plastic items. Do you also feel so strongly about the incessant gluggers of water from plastic bottles, the people who really do look like babies with dummies and sippy cups? Or people who eat crisps? There are billions more plastic bottles and packets around than vapes.

Dothefandangos · 26/01/2024 13:37

They’re bloody childish too, I find it bizarre when actual adults use them.

Why, that's what they were there for
Nicotine replacement therapy, like patches or inhalers to give up smoking

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 26/01/2024 13:47

I'm asthmatic, well controlled but if I get caught up in a puff of vape swill I do feel it's effects. It's such a cloying smell, like cannabis it just feels like it sticks in my lungs. May be psychological but still, it's horrible.

At least smokers go, have their fag and 5 mins later they're done. Vapers are constantly suckling on the teat of their little bottle of liquid and its just absurd. Why does it need to be in their hands all the time?

I got the benefit of using vape to get off cigarettes, my IL were massive smokers, who then moved to vaping and eventually quit it all together. THAT should be how their used, not as a ridiculous comfort dummy subjecting all around you to that cloying smell.

Imposing your addiction on others is unreasonable and antisocial. Whether that is cigarettes, weed, vapes, or alcohol. As soon as your habit affects others wellbeing, you're being unreasonable..

OhmygodDont · 26/01/2024 13:53

There is loads of vaping in secondary schools. A couple of shops locally just got busted for under counter vapes. The ones that do over a certain amount of puff and with chemicals banned here. For only £4 get your doggy knock off vapes kids.

A new vape and sweet store just opened near my oldest secondary school they also sell bongs quite proudly.

We have just swapped fags for vapes with these teenagers who will under the new laws never be old enough to legally buy fags. Undercounter fags are now under counter vapes and everyone knows a place you can get one.

I couldn’t careless tbh.

when you’ve been to the funeral of one person then it’s one person too many.

HTH.

Noshowlomo · 26/01/2024 14:13

It’s rank. People assume they can just vape in your car or anywhere they wouldn’t normally smoke. I shouldn’t have to tell people not to vape in my car.
Claggy minging smelling like cheap deodorant filth.

Yes I do actually. Just because other things are made of single use plastic, it doesn't mean we should add to it with yet more. You might have missed the push back against it we had before the pandemic response meant people stopped giving a shit.

I was in Spain a couple of weeks ago where people were trying with every tide to pick up plastic nurdles on the beach after a container ship lost some. It was a hopeless task, yet they were still doing it. Hours after fruitless hour, day after day picking up tiny pieces of plastic which are used to make things like single use fucking vapes.

If people want to kill themselves with actual cigarettes crack on I say. The fools pay for their cancer and other horrible diseases with the enormous tax they pay with every packet.

OK, but you’re objecting to a product on environmental grounds that’s got little impact compared to other uses of plastic. That’s like railing against yogurt or margarine because they come in plastic containers.

MaloneMeadow · 26/01/2024 16:35

Just returned after a few hours. Bizarre to see a select few incessant vapers defend their nasty habit to every sensible comment that comes their way, read the room!

It’s not the plastic that worries me or most people. The disposables ones which most of the teens use and are constantly being dumped contain lithium ion batteries, so not only an environmental disaster but a safety risk. There has been no time in history where so many batteries are just being carelessly chucked in hedges, on streets, rivers etc.

It’s what worries the pp. Her comments have been all about, and only about, single use plastics.

OP, with respect, that other people don’t agree with you about something doesn’t mean they’re being ‘bizarre’ or not sensible. They just have a different point of view. Most things in life aren’t black and white, they’re shades of gray.

I wish that were true in my area. I’d take the vape smoke over the cigarette smoke in our town centre. I go straight to the town centre market after the school run so I don’t have to deal with it, otherwise by 10 there are smokers smoking in shop doorways and in outdoor public areas where people have to pass them.

couiza · 26/01/2024 17:58

The day that cigarettes are sold on prescription is the day I'll agree to the same for vaping.

It's here, it ain't going anywhere anytime soon, so just like all other air pollutants it is something that most people don't notice much, like me a non smoker/vaper, However, vaping on its own is constantly railed against by the "agin everything" crowd. Not satisfied with the smoking ban, no.... and now that nicotine addicts no longer have to emit cigarette smoke, well the next thing for the zealots is vaping.

It reminds me of a controlling partner in a relationship, about which we can read much on this site every day.

Some people seem to have a lot of angry time on their hands. Perspective is needed.

For the children and teens who are becoming addicted to nicotine from a young age and using them as a gateway to smoking, yes.

They're not legal for children and teens (well under 18s)

Being illegal doesn’t mean that they can’t still easily buy them via dodgy newsagents etc. Even my own (otherwise very sensible!) DD managed to buy one at 15 without me ever knowing as she thought it would be cool.. thankfully she quickly realised that it wasn’t and only told me years later. For as long as the vape companies knowingly market to children and teens there will be demand, that’s where the big problem lies

There are some stats about hospitalisations, in 3 years theres been around 1000 hospitalisations from vaping or vaping correlated disorders of all ages

Each year there are 5000 hospitalisations from passive smoking in children.

Neither is great, both are anti social.

Dozens of children under ten hospitalised for vaping | Sacpa

There have been a big rise in hospital admissions linked to vaping for children under the age of ten since the start of last year, figures show. NHS hospital admissions for “vaping-related disorders” have tripled in two years across all age groups, wit...

Yes I know. I was just correcting you when you said you want a ban for children and teens.

You can buy anything, energy drinks, fags, booze, drugs.

A ban for children and teens doesn’t just mean a ban for buying them, I mean a ban in marketing them full stop. It’s illegal for alcohol companies to market to that audience yet nobody bats an eyelid whilst vape companies and shops openly do it

Ok, well you keep adding on bits and changing bits, whatever

I dont disagree but the laws are already in place to protect children and like most laws its not fool proof

Posters on the thread have already said how they like all the sweety flavours and pinkness for their own vapes as adults.

DonnaBanana · 26/01/2024 19:08

There isn't even a need for it anymore. Have you seen the nicotine pouches popping up all over the place lately? They're discreet and no smoke involved.

OhmygodDont · 26/01/2024 19:14

I mean there’s even big name shops than don’t I’d for energy drinks. My 14 year old can again go into the one by school and walk out with 10 cans of monster or redbull not an eyelid batted.

Lots of things that shouldn’t be sold to under 18’s are being and not just dodgy corner shops.

couiza · 26/01/2024 19:23

Re the nicotine pouches mentioned above, are they not the same as nicotine lozenges, or do the pouches have a higher nicotine content? I don't know, if I was a smoker I think I'd be afraid of swallowing the pouch! Patches don't seem to be popular either. I suppose for smokers vaping is the thing that mimics smoking, so it works.
