To be sick of vapes everywhere

I can’t seem to go anywhere these days without a white cloud of disgusting candy flavoured vapour being blown in my face. It’s gotten to a point where I truly believe that it’s worse than smoking - at least most smokers are well aware that it’s an anti-social behaviour and do it away from other people, and outdoors! With vapers there seem to be absolutely no boundaries or thought that not everyone wants to be covered in their chemical smoke.

Absolutely horrible habit that’s catching on to far too many young children. A ban can’t come soon enough - even my 19 year old DD is sick of her friends being addicted to them. They’re like dummies in some cases, never out of their mouths!

When I don’t get is that in do many other areas of our lives we are encouraged to make environmentally responsible choices but these things use no end of plastics. The batteries are a huge problem too. Not only when they are just chucked about as litter but when they get thrown in the bin. They cause a lot of fires at waste processing plants.

Yes, all regular vape liquid. Mostly from the disposable ones. No cannabis or anything like that

Were there not media reports of this? Multiple hospitalisations among a group of kids would surely have been reported widely.

As a long term vaper (never used disposables) I've followed reporting on vaping and have yet to see stories like this.

There have already been publicised cases - google VAPI

Both girls had severe pneumonia, which respiratory consultants were confident was related to their vape addiction

I have noticed that some vapers do not seem to be able to regulate themselves and pull out their vape whenever they feel. Those that use them on public transport are the worse. You cannot move away from them.
I do not want them banned but used appropriately.

mambojambodothetango · 25/01/2024 22:21

I literally have no experience of vaping. Maybe I live in a bubble but I never see people doing it where I live and even when going elsewhere it's not something I notice. I don't know anyone who does it. Not denying it must exist but just struck that you're sick of it yet I never see it.

DillDanding · 25/01/2024 22:24

I have a new colleague that vapes. He’s terribly embarrassed and apologetic about it, considers himself a pariah, but I don’t think it’s that bad.

Apart from him, I don’t know anyone that smokes or vapes. So it really doesn’t affect me.

I live in Belfast, so capital city, huge uni population which definitely contributes to things

I googled VAPI...

So mostly THC (which is carried in oil as I said previously).

And @PencilsInSpace has a better link with more accurate data.

VAPI is another name for EVALI according to wiki.

What I don’t get is how vape shops were ever allowed/approved? They’re everywhere in Ireland. There were never cigarette shops so where did this come from?

There used to be cigarettes shops. Could buy single cigarettes back then. Sold loose tobacco, exotic cigarettes, pipes and cigars.

unkownone · 25/01/2024 22:41

Ugh I had to tell a guy to stop on holidays, we were in a van transfer and I had to sit next to him and he tried hiding the fact he was vaping but he was blowing out that crap all over my daughter- could see it go all over her. I probably was in a cranky mood not having any fresh air due to every one smoking weed lol but I thought we’d get a break in a private transfer van.

Wow, never knew that!!

They stink and look ridiculous. Grim.

If you have nothing relevant or constructive to add then don’t say anything. Not hard

I think “cool story bro” is meant to mean that the pp doesn’t believe that “multiple friends” of your daughter have been hospitalised by vaping.

I have to say it…I don’t believe you either.

You can make your objection about dislike of the smell without over-egging it by suggesting that vaping is highly dangerous.

Nowhere on this thread am I suggesting that it is highly dangerous, what I am saying is that we don’t yet know the long term effects.

Both girls ended up in hospital with severe pneumonia, which respiratory consultants believed to be linked to lung inflammation from years of heavy vaping. Believe it’s made up if you want… strange person

There were tobacconists everywhere in England around 30 years ago. The last one in my town just closed down.

TealSapphire · 25/01/2024 23:05

YANBU OP. I see it everywhere too and just think it's pointless. Adults who have never smoked taking it up?! Reminds me of puff the magic dragon whenever I see the cloud of smoke coming from their mouths.

Aah, tobacconists, I'd completely forgotten the word (oh the joy of peri-meno!).

They should only be available on prescription to those trying to give up smoking. Kids certainly shouldn't be able to get hold of them.

So inconvenience responsible adults instead of parents actually parenting their children

ThePoshUns · 25/01/2024 23:11

I agree OP, I hate the sickly, sweet claggy smell. I'd prefer the smell of fags to be honest. Sick of the sight of adults sucking in their big baby dummy's in their baggy tracksuits everywhere.

thingsineverthoughtidsay · 25/01/2024 23:13

I can’t understand how we have got to this stage here with vapes. Society was finally getting to a good place with numbers giving up smoking, and due to the government being totally lax over vaping regulations, that problem is now enormous. Why on earth didn’t they foresee this coming?!!
I agree with you BTW OP, I’m sick of the clouds of vapour everywhere I go. You honestly can’t escape it because people do it ‘on the sly’ in enclosed spaces. It’s awful!
