To be sick of vapes everywhere

I can’t seem to go anywhere these days without a white cloud of disgusting candy flavoured vapour being blown in my face. It’s gotten to a point where I truly believe that it’s worse than smoking - at least most smokers are well aware that it’s an anti-social behaviour and do it away from other people, and outdoors! With vapers there seem to be absolutely no boundaries or thought that not everyone wants to be covered in their chemical smoke.

Absolutely horrible habit that’s catching on to far too many young children. A ban can’t come soon enough - even my 19 year old DD is sick of her friends being addicted to them. They’re like dummies in some cases, never out of their mouths!

Considering you seem to jump on to every anti-vape thread to defend it I think my point has been proven. Public Health England aren’t here commenting, you are.

If you have been on previous vape threads with me then you will know you are spreading misinformation.

This is dangerous because it discourages smokers from making the switch and can even cause ex-smoking vapers to return to cigarettes. This is something that PHE has warned about in each of their yearly evidence reviews. This is from the most recent:

In 2021, only 34% of adults who smoked accurately believed that vaping was less harmful than smoking. Only 11% of adults who smoked knew that none or a small amount of the risks of smoking were due to nicotine. Inaccurate perceptions need to be addressed.

The evidence reviewed also suggests that:

  • people’s perceptions about vaping harms can influence their subsequent vaping and smoking behaviour
  • communicating accurate information about the relative harms of vaping can help to correct misperceptions of vaping, particularly among adults
Interventions on absolute harms of vaping that aim to deter young people need to be carefully designed so they do not misinform people (particularly smokers) about the relative harms of smoking and vaping.

Also you are causing a lot of unnecessary worry for parents whose teens have started vaping. You are telling them that their child has a high likelihood of ending up in hospital with a severe respiratory illness and that is not true.

Underage vaping absolutely needs to be tackled. The laws are already there but unless trading standards is funded properly we can change the law to be as draconian as you like but there will be no effective enforcement.

Heisaknob · 26/01/2024 10:23

I’m with you OP they are disgusting and just another indicator of how rude and entitled people have become.

To me it’s as bad as someone breathing heavily into my face, all the germs and crap I assume is attached to the vapour, so no thanks keep your lung filth to yourself!

PencilsInSpace · 26/01/2024 10:28

how many adults choose gummy bear flavour?

Quite a lot! When smokers switch they tend to want something that doesn't taste of fags in order to distance themselves from the habit. Also none of the tobacco flavours actually taste of fags because that would involve burning things.

PHE says that among adult vapers (who are overwhelmingly current or former smokers):

Fruit (35.3%), menthol/mint (22.5%) and tobacco (20.9%) remained the most popular flavours

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/nicotine-vaping-in-england-2022-evidence-update/nicotine-vaping-in-england-2022-evidence-update-summary

There have always been a variety of fruit, sweet and dessert flavours for as long as vaping has existed. It's only since disposables hit the market that we have seen a huge rise in youth vaping.

Do you have similar concerns about nicotine gum being sold in nice flavours?

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 26/01/2024 10:33

Incidentally, and I know this is off-topic but it is interesting (I think)…the explosion in gambling and advertising of gambling was caused by an act passed in 2005 and in force from 2007. The reason the then government relaxed gambling was because tobacco tax income was falling and they needed another source of money for the treasury: gambling tax.

The catastrophe of gambling addiction has soared since. Gambling addicts can bankrupt themselves and their families in hours or minutes, particularly with casino games. It’s a very, very dangerous habit for some.

I hate smoking and am happy for ever more restrictions on it. But be careful how you do it, whether it’s for the public purse or for acting against alternatives to smoking, like vaping.

(And to be fair to the governments post-2010, they’ve done the rowing back on gambling relaxation, unlike Blair who caused the problem.)

I'd imagine that there is far more air pollution/emission coming from the millions of vehicles on our roads all day every day.

Until those who oppose vaping (without much to back it up mind), walk and cycle everywhere exclusively, there isn't much point in rabid (often unfounded) criticism of vape emissions.

Think about it. I do agree with three things though - ban fruit flavours -ban to children- ban disposables. However as a pp said, enforcement is a key factor. Talk is cheap.

I am a non vaper/smoker. Vaping doesn't bother me in the least. I am tolerant, I drive a big car so cannot be two faced about it.

What I don’t get is how vape shops were ever allowed/approved? They’re everywhere in Ireland. There were never cigarette shops so where did this come from?

Back in the day there were. Tobacconists.
ps I love vaping

questionsconfusion · 26/01/2024 10:47

This morning a car was advertising vapes online outside my child's secondary school. Literally the car was wrapped in the advert

ShortHairedCat · 26/01/2024 10:48

Just don’t sell them to kids like alcohol isn’t sold to kids. Simple

JamSandle · 26/01/2024 10:49

They're vile. So sickly sweet. I hate smoking/vaping because you get forced to breathe in the second hand poison of inconsiderate people.

PencilsInSpace · 26/01/2024 10:49

Theyve got a whole generation of DC hooked on nicotine, who otherwise wouldn't be

The stats don't support this. The latest ASH survey shows that while there has been a marked uptick since 2021, only 3.7% of 11-17 y/o are regularly vaping.

It's also not true that vaping is acting as a gateway to smoking for children or that smoking is becoming cool again. The trend in youth smoking continues downwards.

(the 7.6% current use of vapes in the second graph is made up of both regular and occasional users but excludes those who have just tried it once or twice).

We've always inconvenienced responsible adults in order to protect children.

To those who think vaping is safe for kids.... you have no clue what they're vaping. They pass vapes around in the bathrooms at school with no idea what's in there. Some vape shops are selling kids illegal substances including 'spice' which absolutely does lead to hospital admissions and even death. DC at school have had seizures due to it. You have no idea what your DC are vaping.

I also know of a DC who was admitted with severe pneumonia and vaping was thought to be an aggrevating factor.

I detest vapes and absolutely wish they had never been invented. They look and smell ridiculous, are catastrophic for the environment, are deliberately marketed to children (how many adults choose gummy bear flavour?) and have led to DC unwittingly vaping illegal substances. Theyve got a whole generation of DC hooked on nicotine, who otherwise wouldn't be, their parents don't know as the smell isn't as obvious as cigarette smoke on their clothes. There's nothing good to be said for them imo.

Watch the panorama show on teen vaping, it's very clear on health and financial impacts.

Edited

Being asthmatic and having asthmatic children I totally believe the person mentioning the children in hospital. It really is an issue for myself and my older child when others vape near. Tbf I do have triggers from cigarette smoke and perfume but breathing in second hand vape smoke is also disgusting.

I appreciate some adults may like the candy floss flavour but it is also appealing to children. The difficulty is children are buying it online and it's mixed with all sorts. It's terrifying. Thankfully my children haven't used it because it would make them seriously ill.

At least with cigarettes you could smell it and know when kids had used them. Also they were far more difficult to get hold of. The other disgusting thing is some young kids pick up disposed vapes off the floor. It really is a big issue.

Nobody is talking about air pollution. I am talking about the thick clouds of white disgustingly sweet smelling smoke that is constantly being wafted in my face by inconsiderate vapers. The thought of breathing in someone else’s expelled breath is revolting

You’d have to stop people breathing to achieve that aim.

newusern99 · 26/01/2024 09:03

Whilst it is true that vaping is safer than smoking and there may be no long-term effects related to cancer and lung health (unknown) it is known that nicotine can negatively impact foetal growth and sperm count and motility so I think there are likely to be issues arising in the future from vaping.

Better tell the NHS then. They've been prescribing nicotine replacement to pregnant women for decades. They also support pregnant women using a vape to quit smoking.

Not unreasonable though.

No, they don’t, and even if they did you wouldn’t get them from ‘passive vaping’.

I’m not saying there are absolutely no risks to vapers - although the evidence of harm seems very slight and speculative - but there are no risks to non-vapers.

ns87 · 26/01/2024 11:10

I agree, completely loathe it.

‘Normal’ people don’t blow out a cloud of still warm, sweet smelling, thick and white smoke which seems to travel a huge distance. There’s a bit of a difference

We don’t yet know the long term effects of vaping, so that is questionable at the minute. Multiple young friends of DD (all heavy vapers) have ended up in hospital because of it in recent years.

Nowadays vapes have become a gateway drug to smoking

LOL. Putting that down on the List of Things That Didn’t Happen.

if you think it's a lie that multiple young people can end up in hospital as a result of vaping, you should watch this documentary series on netflix:
