To be sick of vapes everywhere

MaloneMeadow · 25/01/2024 20:43

I can’t seem to go anywhere these days without a white cloud of disgusting candy flavoured vapour being blown in my face. It’s gotten to a point where I truly believe that it’s worse than smoking - at least most smokers are well aware that it’s an anti-social behaviour and do it away from other people, and outdoors! With vapers there seem to be absolutely no boundaries or thought that not everyone wants to be covered in their chemical smoke.

Absolutely horrible habit that’s catching on to far too many young children. A ban can’t come soon enough - even my 19 year old DD is sick of her friends being addicted to them. They’re like dummies in some cases, never out of their mouths!

Which is why I said the law should be enforced and parents should play their part.

The law prohibits u-18s buying or using vapes. What else do you want? A ban for all? (Which is what you did say in the OP, though you’re now backtracking.)

A quick google tells me that the gov announced a ban on fruit flavours in vapes in the last King’s Speech. Seems reasonable.

Anything else you suggest?

A ban is being considered, nothing set in stone and with the way our government is heading it will be a long time before any of this is ever put in place. Unless the companies stop marketing to children there is always going to be demand from that age group, who have ways and means of getting what they want whether it’s illegal or not. The vast majority of parents are not the issue here. My own (very sensible) child managed to easily buy one at 15 without me ever knowing until she told me years later.

Popcorn lung. From standard vapes.
https://www.lung.org/blog/popcorn-lung-risk-ecigs

Edited

Diacetyl is banned in standard UK vapes though.

JarvisRocker · 26/01/2024 09:25

I’m not arguing for them btw! I’m horrified that children are getting admitted to hospital after vaping!! I’m just wondering what’s happening and if it’s not diacetyl, what is it? This is a huge worry.

DocOck · 26/01/2024 09:26

They are the worst things to be invented in a long time. Adults walking around sucking on them like a dummy. Also, it's the excessive use. I believe that people vape way more than smoking. You see people going on them constantly, and not many people chainsmoked like that!

NameChangeImEmbarassed · 26/01/2024 09:27

Yes they’re gross!
walking along the street and a massive load of strawberry smoke or whatever it is blows into everyone’s face and we breathe it in.. all I can think is we are breathing in their breath that’s literally just come out of their nose and mouth. And I know that would be the case whether it was vape smoke or not but at least we wouldn’t have to be so acutely aware of it!

Desecratedcoconut · 26/01/2024 09:28

They are fucking awful. There are places where everyone seems to be at it and it's like walking through a forest of glade plug-ins 🤮

Yes - the excessive use is definitely a major issue as well. Most of DD’s friends go through about 2 Elf bars a week, equivalent to almost 100 cigarette’s worth of nicotine!!

ButterCrackers · 26/01/2024 09:31

Agree. It’s just horrible to have to walk through the vape cloud. They are bad for the vapers lungs and need to be banned.

Yeah, that's 100% bullshit 😅

Vapes are 95% better than cigarettes according to the NHS - all you are inhaling into your lungs is water vapour. They help so many people give up smoking which is a really good thing.

However, I'd ban disposable vapes and all the sweet flavours which are aimed at children.

EverySporkIsSacred · 26/01/2024 09:36

I can't stand vapes. Some are quite unobtrusive but others seem to produce a massive cloud of stench (I presume its supposed to look cool) which lingers for ages where others are going to walk through.
It smells terrible and I don't appreciate having to breathe in someone's used lung juice.

On them being marketed to children, there is a shop in the town I live in called "Toys and Vapes" where presumably kids can pick up a lovely dolly with their pocket money and a vape at the same time. Its covered in flashy lights to attract kids as well. Only thing missing is a guy saying "come and get your lollipops...".

Laws made by any government need to go through parliamentary process. That’s how it works. 🙄

But it’s not obvious what you actually want. Draconian rules about children - which are fair enough - isn’t going to stop adults vaping. If you’re appalled by clouds of vape and “vapes everywhere” you’ll have to ban vapes completely. But you say you don’t want that.

Fully aware of parliamentary processes thank you very much! For our government, especially at the minute it is not going to be a priority bill. I am willing to bet it will be years before it’s even thought about being put in place.

I’m not talking about stopping adults vaping. It’s the extreme marketing to children and young people which is getting them hooked from an early age. The vape companies are fully to blame and need to be held accountable

Have not read the thread.

I don't think smokers are awear how antisocial smoking is also smoking weed. At bus stops smoking on the streets the smell is gross and end up breathing it in. It's disgusting. I think because their outside they think its ok . I would rather a vape that a cigarette/joint .

BestDIL · 26/01/2024 09:59

I vape but only because it stops me smoking cigarettes. After 30+years of smoking, I switched to vapes. I use a vape pen and purchase liquid from a reputable supplier. I do sometimes vape indoors but not around other people.

The type of vapes that produce plumes of smoke are horrendous and I have been caught in some of the clouds. Its horrible!

The disposable vapes that you see littered around the streets are definitely aimed at youngsters. Both my neice and nephew who have never smoked both vape the disposable ones. My neice is a trainee nurse so you'd think she would know better.

I am not sure that making them prescription only will help now - its too late. People will just buy them on the black market and they will be unregulated and much more dangerous.

It’s not water vapour, it’s chemicals

Water is a chemical. All substances in chemistry are chemicals. The - no doubt nutritious - food you give your child(ren) is composed of chemicals.

Whether chemicals are harmful to life or not, and if so in what amounts and concentrations, is another matter.

The popcorn lung effect has been shot down already. And if adults want to satisfy a nicotine addiction that’s for them. Nicotine may be addictive but it’s not harmful:

https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/causes-of-cancer/smoking-and-cancer/is-vaping-harmful#:~:text=Does%20nicotine%20cause%20cancer%3F,stop%20smoking%20for%20many%20years.

(I assume you’ll take the Cancer Research Campaign’s word for it.)

Is vaping harmful?

Research so far shows that legal e-cigarettes are far less harmful than smoking. But they are not risk-free and we don’t yet know their long-term effects.

Both girls were well controlled asthmatics

Sounds like their asthma isn't well controlled at all then. Extremely rare to be hospitalised just for vaping. There's always an underlying reason or illness. Top many anti vaping scaremongering stories in the media 🙄

YeahBrackie · 26/01/2024 10:04

Bargello · 26/01/2024 08:12

Yes, but a large number of the younger people who are vaping are not previous smokers so that theory doesn't really work.

Well if it stops them taking up smoking..

That’s not what most of your OP says.

So 2 teenage girls ending up in hospital on oxygen, nebulisers and steroids is bullshit? Alright, think what you like!

I'm guessing it might've sounded more credible if you'd said 'two' in the first place rather than 'multiple'?

The word multiple sounded like you were heavily implying more than two.

I mean you wouldn't say you have 'multiple' arms or 'multiple' legs would you?
