To be sick of vapes everywhere

I can’t seem to go anywhere these days without a white cloud of disgusting candy flavoured vapour being blown in my face. It’s gotten to a point where I truly believe that it’s worse than smoking - at least most smokers are well aware that it’s an anti-social behaviour and do it away from other people, and outdoors! With vapers there seem to be absolutely no boundaries or thought that not everyone wants to be covered in their chemical smoke.

Absolutely horrible habit that’s catching on to far too many young children. A ban can’t come soon enough - even my 19 year old DD is sick of her friends being addicted to them. They’re like dummies in some cases, never out of their mouths!

I hate them, they stink and people use them anti socially in shops and cafes and for some reason no one tells them to stop and go outside

But, I cant stand misinformation. We have this at work, with people trying to scare monger kids to stop by telling them about these so called hospitalisations.

I work with kids and they get admitted to hospital for all sorts of things which are dangerous, but vaping has never been one of those things. Yet.

FUPAgirl · 26/01/2024 07:39

To those who think vaping is safe for kids.... you have no clue what they're vaping. They pass vapes around in the bathrooms at school with no idea what's in there. Some vape shops are selling kids illegal substances including 'spice' which absolutely does lead to hospital admissions and even death. DC at school have had seizures due to it. You have no idea what your DC are vaping.

I also know of a DC who was admitted with severe pneumonia and vaping was thought to be an aggrevating factor.

I detest vapes and absolutely wish they had never been invented. They look and smell ridiculous, are catastrophic for the environment, are deliberately marketed to children (how many adults choose gummy bear flavour?) and have led to DC unwittingly vaping illegal substances. Theyve got a whole generation of DC hooked on nicotine, who otherwise wouldn't be, their parents don't know as the smell isn't as obvious as cigarette smoke on their clothes. There's nothing good to be said for them imo.

Watch the panorama show on teen vaping, it's very clear on health and financial impacts.

I have a colleague that chain smoked when wfh over lockdown and swapped to vaping recently, she's always on it when in the office as she carries it round in a pocket, we're banned from smoking and vaping on site but she still does it, multiple 'smoke' breaks and vaping adhoc 'by accident' is winding us all up but she's saying she feels bullied if it's brought up by management.
Everyone else manages to stick to the correct breaks and keep them I'm their coats but not her.
I hate the things being everywhere.

There used to be cigarettes shops. Could buy single cigarettes back then. Sold loose tobacco, exotic cigarettes, pipes and cigars.

There's definitely at least a tobacco shop and a cigar shop in Belfast.

alivio · 26/01/2024 08:10

watch Big Vape: The Rise and Fall of JUUL on netflix. Shows how addictive it is and damaging. Numerous young people in hospital. It's in the documentary. Scary stuff.

Thegoodbadandugly · 25/01/2024 20:54

Better a vape than cigarette smoke.

Yes, but a large number of the younger people who are vaping are not previous smokers so that theory doesn't really work.

I doubt if anyone approves of children vaping. As far as I know, vapes are not allowed by law to be sold to children. And, again as far as I know, vaping is prohibited by law or policy in most places that smoking is banned.

If children are the concern, the law should be enforced and parents should do their part.

But that’s not what the OP is complaining about. She wants vapes banned for adults too. Because she doesn’t like the smell.

As someone said upthread, why ban vaping for adults? If it’s just about occasional nuisance, there are many other things ahead in the queue.

Nowhere in any of my posts does it say that I want them banned

YANBU. Smoking is worse technically but smokers go outside, smoke a fag for a minute or two, then stub it out. Gone. With vaping they just walk around sucking on them everywhere like some kind of ridiculous adult dummy. I’m sick of walking down the road (especially with baby in pram) and being engulfed by a cloud that smells like cheap vanilla candles and chemicals. And don’t even get me started on the disposable vapes.

It’s all teenagers round here and people young enough not to have the ‘quitting smoking’ excuse. It’s just become a silly fad, they look stupid.

I am told by DD that vaping is becoming cringe and chavvy, and that all the trendsetters have moved on to smoking cigarettes. What on earth is the world coming to

In your first post you said…A ban can’t come soon enough

34weekmess · 26/01/2024 08:56

I did hear that smoking is coming back into 'fashion'
I don't mind what people do, live and let live is my opinion
People get pissed
Take drugs
Smoke fags
Vape
Eat loads of junk food
But that is their choice and nothing to do with me

JarvisRocker · 26/01/2024 08:56

MaloneMeadow · 25/01/2024 21:00

We don’t yet know the long term effects of vaping, so that is questionable at the minute. Multiple young friends of DD (all heavy vapers) have ended up in hospital because of it in recent years.

Nowadays vapes have become a gateway drug to smoking

This is extremely concerning. When you say several, how many? What symptoms took them to hospital? What were the diagnoses? Are they well now?

For the children and teens who are becoming addicted to nicotine from a young age and using them as a gateway to smoking, yes.

Vapes are already banned by law for under-18s.

newusern99 · 26/01/2024 09:03

Whilst it is true that vaping is safer than smoking and there may be no long-term effects related to cancer and lung health (unknown) it is known that nicotine can negatively impact foetal growth and sperm count and motility so I think there are likely to be issues arising in the future from vaping.

MaloneMeadow · 26/01/2024 09:04

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 26/01/2024 09:00

Vapes are already banned by law for under-18s.

But is that law actually effective? No. Vape companies are specifically marketing to this age group and they know it. What adult looking to quit smoking wants a colourful, gummy bear flavoured vape?

Which is why I said the law should be enforced and parents should play their part.

The law prohibits u-18s buying or using vapes. What else do you want? A ban for all? (Which is what you did say in the OP, though you’re now backtracking.)

A quick google tells me that the gov announced a ban on fruit flavours in vapes in the last King’s Speech. Seems reasonable.

Anything else you suggest?

Multiple young friends of DD (all heavy vapers) have ended up in hospital because of it in recent years.

Really? From standard vapes?

From the reports I've read the hospitalisations from 'vaping' have all been linked to 'vaping' cannabis oils not standard water based vape liquids. Of course inhaling heating oils direct to your lungs will cause harm, but standard vape liquids don't contain oils.

Popcorn lung. From standard vapes.

Exactly, OP. They used to promote cigarettes as being healthy before they realised they cause cancer

Paw2024 · 26/01/2024 09:20

@MaloneMeadow me. And I'm not unusual
I quit a 30 a day habit back in 2015 with a rainbow fizz flavour. My manager uses skittles flavour liquid
There's some very old threads on here where we chat about various flavours and stuff before disposable ones even existed
