Assistant changed Dds hairstyle

Not angry or upset 😂just curious.
Today I sent my 5 year old into school with her hair in two high bunches, with the rest of her hair down. She’s not had it like this before and saw a girl on the tv at the weekend with similar hair to hers put in this style and asked for it. It actually looked v cute. DD’s fair is getting longer now, past her shoulders and thick and wavy/curly.
When I picked her up from school, she had two low plaits in, I didn’t notice for ages and until she was in the car and only then as it was different to how I do it and then I remembered her hair in the morning.
I asked Dd why her hair had changed and she said the assistant called her over after lunch when she was playing with her friend and took her hair out and put two plaits in 🤷🏻‍♀️
My first thought was nits maybe, but we always get informed by the teacher that day, plus an email goes out.
Did she just not like the style 😅

Im a primary school teacher. I often redo hair if it’s coming out but I wouldn’t touch it otherwise.

ArnieLinson · 24/01/2024 20:33

My dd’s primary school was hair tied up for boys and girls whose hair was below shoulder length.

however, it also could have fallen or have been falling out.

MumTeacherofMany · 24/01/2024 20:42

@TulipTuesday I'm a TA and some of the girls come in with brushes and hair ties ready for me to French braid their hair. I love it ad my DD won't let me near her gorgeous long hair!

FluffyFanny · 24/01/2024 20:43

I am a TA and if a girls hair falls out I will tie it back again for them to prevent it falling over their face- usually in a simple ponytail as I can't be arsed with anything else.

Some staff just love doing hair though and will take the opportunity to do fancy plaits etc. if the child wants it.

Teacher here . Younger children with beautiful long hair- abhhhh! The temptation to plat it . We would love to braid it .

If it was free play / role play or the child’s hair hard come undone - we would brush the child’s hair and braid it! This sounds bonkers but it’s true ! It’s so tempting to just ‘do’ beautiful hair !

Weird and creepy.

ItsJustMe88 · 24/01/2024 21:00

Ahw this reminds me of my DD's nursery times - at 3 years old she looked very sweet with blond longish hair and every time she went in she would come back with the most intricate hairdos. The nursery teacher just loved sitting with her and doing her hair (and DD obviously loved the attention).

She's 9 now with short pixie hair - often died red - and only ever wears shirts to school: total tomboy. What a difference a few years can make😂

@capnfeathersword I asked her that and she said no, hair was still up and she was just playing and she called her over

She's 5

Charlieradioalphapapa · 24/01/2024 21:01

I would re-do falling out ponytails, plaits and bunches as necessary. Fine , clean hair seems to be particularly good at escaping from bobbles, clips and ribbons. Even thicker hair can end up in a state after outside play, windy weather and the type of hair accessories used. Personally I’d go for whatever was most likely to stay in a containment situation, nothing fancy as I’m useless at anything beyond basic bunches, ponytails and a plait.

Wetblanket78 · 24/01/2024 21:03

One of the staff used to do my DD hair in a french plat. I'm useless at doing them so never bothered me. She was in a SN school and it was part of her personal development sessions working on their appearance and independence etc. She also had her nails painted. She used to love getting home showing off her hair.

Get some boundaries- that's creepy

At our school loose hair always has to be tied back

Tiredmama53 · 24/01/2024 21:06

Always happens to my daughters, they both play hard and often take their jumpers on and off and it makes half the hair come out so the dinner ladies or assistants or whoever else will fix it for them.

HaveSomeIntrospect · 24/01/2024 21:14

How was hair gate today 😁

JellyfishandShells · 24/01/2024 21:20

DD1 used to come out of school looking as neat and tidy as when she went in, not a hair out of place.

DD2 used to come out with one plait or bunch in and the other out, one sock down, jumper on backwards, someone else’s coat on, unexplained paint across her skirt, mud somewhere.

DD1 is now queen of the messy bun and DD2 always completely polished in her appearance.

VaccineSticker · 24/01/2024 21:25

First world problems

Itsbeginingtolookalotlikexmas · 24/01/2024 21:28

Your DD probably asked for it to be done and she called her over when she was free. It’s unlikely anyone is casting judgement.

moomoomoo27 · 24/01/2024 20:55

Weird and creepy.

It's really not.

Loads of girls (and some of boys) deliberately pull hair out so teacher or TA can do fancy braids at punch.

I think it's sweet and caring

Duechristmas · 24/01/2024 21:37

Could she have thought it had fallen out? I've redone hairstyles plenty of times in Year One when they've fallen out, if it was something fancy and I couldn't manage I'd do a ponytail or braid.
It seems like an odd thing to do if her hair was still in place.

katepilar · 24/01/2024 21:43

My guess is the teacher thought the hair was coming undone with some of it up and some of it down. Or it actually was coming out but your daughter didnt see it yet. Or perhaps the teacher just likes doing the hair in which case its a bit weird.

M103 · 24/01/2024 21:51

Never heard about hair needing to be tied up in primary school!! Thanks goodness my kids' primary didn't have that rule. My kids hated having their hair done up or generally done in any way for most of nursery and primary.

PollyPut · 24/01/2024 21:52

@Todolististoolong do school have a policy that it has to be tidied up? Usually to stop nots spreading? From what you describe, it wasn't all tied up.. Maybe they changed it for that reason

FrogRainMoon · 24/01/2024 22:16

I'm a TA and a few times I've seen hairbands gradually slide out of pig tails as the day goes on. So sometimes, before we get to the point where the hair band has slid off completely and will never be seen again, I ask the child if they'd like me to re-tie their hair for them. I can't do any fancy styles so pony tails or plaits have to suffice 😂
I always think it's better to save the hairband, cos once they've slid off you'll never see them again and as a parent I know how annoying it is to lose them Plus young kids having long hair down all day is sooo impractical - it gets majorly knotty plus it's a hazard in terms of getting caught on stuff. That's maybe what the TA was thinking.

ilovesushi · 24/01/2024 22:16

Maybe it looked like some of it had fallen out of the bunches? But if so, surely the TA would try and recreate what they thought was the original hairstyle - bunches - not do a totally new hairstyle.

At our primary all the girls had low pony tails, not a creative mother between us and I remember clearly the teacher doing last lesson geography because she asked, "any questions?" And every girl put their hand up, clear as day I remember her saying, "any questions unrelated to getting your hair braided before the disco?" And every hand went down. Miss Evans did about 15 girls hair for us before that disco and it was the most exciting time ever, then some legend of a TA from next doors class brought us in her wee bag of goodies including the orangey scented spicegirl body spray, roll on glitter in different colours, groovy chick lip glosses and for those truly wild ones, electric blue or lilac eyeshadow. What a time to have been alive 🥳

Sorry but this thread just unlocked this banger of a memory and dp would definitely not want me to wake him up to discuss the disco which 5,6,7,8 and cotton eyed Joe were the most highly requested tunes 😁

Everything here makes me so happy

Bunnycat101 · 24/01/2024 22:25

My 4yo often finishes the day with her hair looking a mess. I wish someone would re-do it. At Nursery she used to come out looking immaculate as they had a lady there who was amazing at hair. all the children loved getting their beautiful plaits done and would sit there totally still for her to do it. I have no idea how she did it!
