Assistant changed Dds hairstyle

Not angry or upset 😂just curious.
Today I sent my 5 year old into school with her hair in two high bunches, with the rest of her hair down. She’s not had it like this before and saw a girl on the tv at the weekend with similar hair to hers put in this style and asked for it. It actually looked v cute. DD’s fair is getting longer now, past her shoulders and thick and wavy/curly.
When I picked her up from school, she had two low plaits in, I didn’t notice for ages and until she was in the car and only then as it was different to how I do it and then I remembered her hair in the morning.
I asked Dd why her hair had changed and she said the assistant called her over after lunch when she was playing with her friend and took her hair out and put two plaits in 🤷🏻‍♀️
My first thought was nits maybe, but we always get informed by the teacher that day, plus an email goes out.
Did she just not like the style 😅

I used to work in a nursery and often re did hair when it became loose. Most of the time, they probably hadn't noticed it was hanging out of the hair tie. I was conscious of them losing hair accessories and also headlice, so I would just re do it so it wasn't in their way.

Kittylala · 23/01/2024 23:40

Don't worry about it

MissersMercer · 23/01/2024 23:57

Sounds odd.

nohopehere · 24/01/2024 02:00

Just say to the TA that you noticed her hair was different when she came home from school and you therefore wondered if there's a new rule you weren't aware of.

PyongyangKipperbang · 24/01/2024 02:42

If the bunch had come loose, ok. But if it hadnt I would be really pissed off about this!

I should add that youngest DD is in Y8 now so no horse in this race.

If the TA took it onherself to do it, then thats not ok. She shouldnt just decide, she doesnt have the right to make decisions like that. If there is a rule about hair being up then at the very least, you should be spoken to about it rather than them just changing the style. If nothing else, your DD chose it, its her hair and her choice.

I dont know why this would really wind me up but it does. I guess for me its along the lines of someone other than a parent deciding a kid needs a hair cut!

Its overstepping and where do we draw the line with that? Do kids have bodily autonomy or not?

DeathbyJedi · 24/01/2024 02:44

Are we overthinking this

PyongyangKipperbang · 24/01/2024 02:45

HAppy to admit that I may well be, but for some reason it really has pissed me off!

Nevermind31 · 24/01/2024 02:51

I’d be assuming that after half a day of running and playing, touching hair, etc, it may have just looked a lot less styled like a tic toc girl, and more like… oh dear, a lot of hair has come loose from your bunches/ plait/ braid/ whatever you had this morning, let me tidy this up for you so you can see.

Lwrenagain · 24/01/2024 04:05

At our primary all the girls had low pony tails, not a creative mother between us and I remember clearly the teacher doing last lesson geography because she asked, "any questions?" And every girl put their hand up, clear as day I remember her saying, "any questions unrelated to getting your hair braided before the disco?" And every hand went down. Miss Evans did about 15 girls hair for us before that disco and it was the most exciting time ever, then some legend of a TA from next doors class brought us in her wee bag of goodies including the orangey scented spicegirl body spray, roll on glitter in different colours, groovy chick lip glosses and for those truly wild ones, electric blue or lilac eyeshadow. What a time to have been alive 🥳

Sorry but this thread just unlocked this banger of a memory and dp would definitely not want me to wake him up to discuss the disco which 5,6,7,8 and cotton eyed Joe were the most highly requested tunes 😁

Sugargliderwombat · 24/01/2024 04:40

I'm a teacher and I'd bet she thought her hair was in but it was a state haha.

Either this or a new member of staff who didn't think you could have half down hair, ive never worked in a school that would allow it so easy just to think it needs doing.

Kurokurosuke · 24/01/2024 05:07

I don't think it's that uncommon. lots of 5 year olds don't notice when their hair become loose/messy. I would just assume it was a nice gesture.

Stevesellsshells · 24/01/2024 06:48

I think it came loose and she fixed it. My 5yo DS with short hair came home with paint in his hair yesterday so maybe they were doing some art in the afternoon and wanted it out of the way!

Stubbedtoes · 24/01/2024 06:59

I'd assume that the hair was still up but one bunch had gone all wonky or something so she fixed it.

If it keeps happening and it's bothering your daughter you could mention it to the teacher.

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 24/01/2024 07:15

Perhaps her hood wouldn't stay up on coat and was cold out, so plaits done so hood would stay up, if it's a coat with a zipper that goes right up

HDready · 24/01/2024 07:18

As someone just recovering from the horror of nits in the household, I would firmly recommend no loose hair in the future. It’s been horrendous!

DappledThings · 24/01/2024 07:21

I'm amazed there isn't a rule about hair up. It is at ours and I thought that was a standard, sensible one.

I've never come across a primary or first school with this rule.
Certainly not at DSs school

Letterbix · 24/01/2024 07:40

I remember being about 6 or 7 and having bunches, I discovered I could stick my finger through the hairband in the middle of the "bunch" (if that makes sense) and I quite liked it so I was doing that all day. I came out of school and my mum started laughing and my sister started taking the piss horribly- I looked in a mirror and my hair was such a mess, big loops of hair on my head where i'd half pushed it out of the hair band. I still remember how embarrassed I was that I'd looked like that all day and no one told me.

I wish someone had taken my bunches out and put plaits in!!

Maybe her bunches just got a bit messy, OP?

Giltedged · 24/01/2024 07:46

I think brushing hair and playing with it is quite intimate and so I can understand being a bit Hmm at it. I’m not suggesting the TA had inappropriate reasons for doing so but the whole point of safeguarding is about modelling appropriate behaviour.

Plaits seems a bit OTT though. To genuinely just keep hair out of the way a quick pony tail would have done.

Redwineislife · 24/01/2024 08:10

A bit different, but my 4 year olds are at preschool and come home most days with their hair different to how it started. They often pull bobbles out, or ask for something different, or are playing hairdressers.

I agree, not good narrators at such a young age, they tell me every day they have forgotten what happened 😅

"How was your day, dc?"

"Fine".

2 hours later after a snack...

"And Adam sent me flying during a game of rounders, miss green suffered a pulmonary embolism, naomi threw Boris the hamster out of the window and Andrew's dad came in to show us a some of his dangerous lizards and samurai sword collection".

Todolististoolong · 24/01/2024 11:16

She didn’t brush her hair.
We don’t have rules about hairstyles and hair having to be up, if we did, it would pose me off tbh!
Have sent her with a small plait with the rest down today…let’s see 😂

SoOutingWhoCares · 24/01/2024 11:23

I'd suspect there are nits going round and the TA was trying to prevent your daughter catching them. Most schools do have a rule about hair longer than shoulder length being tied back for safety reasons in PE and science but also because hair left loose is more of a risk factor for catching nits than plaited or tied back hair.

Hankunamatata · 24/01/2024 11:27

There's a couple of ta at my kids primary who are amazing at doing braids. Kids are constantly asking them to braid their hair at break and lunch.
