Why the hell are GMB gaslighting women with this stuff?

https://twitter.com/GMB/status/1749329378352275568

This is an enormous male-bodied person - even larger than the interviewing man!

Which law do you think requires women to never use the word 'man' to refer to a male?

I think gender reassignment is a protected characteristic, and that covers someone who intends to go through gender reassignment.
I can't imagine Judges would have insisted male born sex offenders were called she in court unless the law compelled it, but as I am not a lawyer I could be wrong.

TheKeatingFive · 23/01/2024 20:20

There’d been lots of reports as the TRAs were out in force on this one.

Interesting as the usual suspects haven't engaged in this discussion.

Change of tactics? 🤔

Morwenscapacioussleeves · 23/01/2024 20:21

Born male - live male - die male

bay boy - becomes boy - becomes man -ends up dead

Clothing choices, make up & cosmetic surgery make not a jot of difference because humans, indeed mammals, can not change sex.

They aren't obliged to act on those reports though. I'm sure HQ know what a man is.

It's perfectly reasonable to call a man a man and giving you the choice of amending your truthful language or facing permanent deletion is exactly what we've been discussing on this thread. Women having to subjugate themselves to appease the very men who are harming us.

Completely agree with you.

Its really upsetting isn’t it.

Like the dark days of Twitter when we’d get banned for misgendering anyone

I don't think it is pandering to the men of this world I think it is pandering to the law of the UK.
Have you ever met a man who is in favour of men or male born persons competing in women's sport?

The thread was taken down due to men, maybe with breasts (fake) maybe with earrings, but men complained..yes they want to be called women, but they are not, never will be!
Women are those born women...everything else I'm happy to accept, I really don't care but get yourself a new category and stop invading our spaces and sports.

So, MNHQ, do we have to use the phrase Female Born person now instead of Woman/Female?
Just want to get ahead of things.... 😳

IcakethereforeIam · 23/01/2024 20:39

Need to change the name of the whole site at this rate, femalebornpersonwhohasoristhinkingaboutbirthingamaleorfemalenet.

All the men I know can't stand the idea, well its a reality sadly, of male born people or men, competing in women's sport. Do you or anyone else know any men who think it a good or fair idea?

The idea that men brought this thread down is absurd. Women run Mumsnet not men.
But whoever brought the thread down could only do so because we as a society, men and women ,with women in the slight majority, enacted laws that enabled them to/ compelled Mumsnet to act or at least to take time to consider.

Men (as a whole) don't want this any more than women.

Yes, GR is protected. That means nobody should suffer discrimination. It has no bearing on the use of the word 'man'.

The word 'man' is not banned. Any more than the word 'male' is.

The law will never change the fact that the category women/female is a birth right...hope that helps 🙄

Happy for any new categories to be set up. Those who wish to fall in the categories can spend decades fighting for those rights, just like true (born female) women did back in the day.

No the word man is not banned, but perhaps applying it to someone who had gone through gender realignment is.
Or perhaps the lawyers who advise MN are worried that someone might argue that it could be and have advised MN against using it.

It's all they have considering they've been roasted over and over through the court system and been made to look very stupid.

Hardly, since mumsnet welcomes anyone regardless of sex or gender , or reproductive status/ choices.

It's not banned. I'm sure there are some people who might love to try to argue that it is, but it is not illegal to state someone's sex.

A transwoman has the PC of gender reassignment so can't be discriminated against; employers can't treat a transwoman any differently than any other man.

This isn't a controversial thing to say, it's simple fact.

Well if that is right, why are so many people in positions of influence cautious about this?

Has it been legally decided that people are not allowed to nominate their pronouns? Because if it hasn't that might be the problem.

I suppose it would be seen as bullying in the workplace if you called me 'David' because that was my name on my birth certificate when I had asked you to call me 'Mary'. Perhaps the same applies to pronouns etc?

'Whether or not conduct in a given situation does amount
to harassment or discrimination within the meaning of the Equality Act 2010
will be for a tribunal to determine in a given case.'

From Forstater's ET, relating to a workplace scenario.

Mumsnet have some very litigious (male/men/AMAB!) posters/lurkers who like making things difficult for mnhq, so I get why they bow down to them on occasions

ArabellaScott · 23/01/2024 21:28

This is from Sex Matters' guide to pronouns at work:

'...no case will settle the matter in all other situations, either in favour of making preferred pronouns always compulsory, or always voluntary. The issue will continue to depend on the facts, and on whether the rule or policy is justified in a specific situation'

Which seems sensible.

I didn't know that. I would love to know if that is right. If it is, the earlier poster was right to exhort MN to be bolder.
