To be worried about war here?

beitasmalltown · 20/01/2024 11:33

I don't listen to conspiracy theories but LBC news have reported this

NATO warn it's members to prepare their armies because they expect 'all out war' (the phrases used) with RUSSIA within the next 20 years

AIBU to be worried? Seems very extreme

Have previously felt very safe in my troubled yet generally very safe country with strong allies

It’s just willy waving, Putin keeps saying how Russia had no boundaries do NATO have to respond with something! Don’t bother with LBC news…,

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 20/01/2024 11:38

Look, the world is pretty volatile at the moment. Nobody can say whether there will be a major war in the next few years. It is a significant risk but by no means a certainty, and all of the major powers have an interest in not letting things get to that stage.

Either way, you worrying about it is not going to make it any less likely to happen. There is simply no point in wasting your mental energy on this. If the worst happens, we'll all have to deal with it when the time comes, but don't ruin the life you have right now with intrusive thoughts about what may or may not happen in the future.

beitasmalltown · 20/01/2024 11:41

It's just worrying that when the war with Ukraine started, people were told off on her for mentioning us going to war and not to be ridiculous, etc etc

And now even the sceptical of such news that NATO have announced say it's a 'significant risk' Sad

I thought that nuclear weapons meant that world war in the style of the twentieth century was less likely to happen because of the inevitable escalatory consequences

skinnycrumpet · 20/01/2024 11:47

It’s not a question of if but when so why worry about something you have no control over

MassageForLife · 20/01/2024 11:47

It's not just on LBC, so the fact that's where op saw it isn't really relevant. I read the story earlier and it does concern me. Especially the part that mentioned people need to be prepared that soldiers might be to be conscripted. But I'm not going to waste time on worrying what might happen twenty years from now.

I just hope that the political landscape changes significantly enough in that time that it doesn't happen.

Livida · 20/01/2024 11:48

@MassageForLife where does it say that?

Rosiiee · 20/01/2024 11:50

Within the next 20 years? Is Putin bloody immortal or what? How old even is he! I would’ve thought there’d been a coup d’état by now in Russia and someone with more sense would’ve taken over!

I thought that by the time we did have to get involved, soldiers would be pointless

Surely the quickest way to victory is to nuke us? Yes I know it's 'mutually assured destruction' but how are Russian soldiers getting anywhere near Germany, France, UK etc? Their only choice is to surely take us all out in a swoop

@MassageForLife where does it say that?

It's in the Metro, the telegraph, the times, the daily mail and the sun. Probably more. I read the story in the Metro, but looked at Google to see where else it was.

Silverbirchtwo · 20/01/2024 11:53

There are people still camped out in remote bunkers for fear of nuclear war since the Bay of Pigs. What a way to waste a life! No use spending your life worrying about what might happen, time enough to worry if it does happen.

There are survivalists stocking up on tinned food and guns in the USA, do they really think that would save them?

Are you assuming that they wouldn't move British soldiers to the front line?

Edited

I'm not saying worrying about it is a good idea

But only 18 months ago and beyond someone posting about a war of such magnitude would've been laughed away and told to either seek help for anxiety or stop being ridiculous

But now it's a very real possibility? That's a huge change if you ask me

@MassageForLife against who? British, Irish, German , Swedish, whoever else as there's a lot, all fighting against The same Russian soldiers that are struggling to hold down Ukraine?

That doesn't make sense. They wouldn't win so surely Russia's only answer is nuclear weapons

OP posts:
Silverbirchtwo · 20/01/2024 11:56

I'm more worried about North Korea than Russia, and have been for several years. I could quite see them doing something crazy, if they feel threatened.

Livida · 20/01/2024 11:56

Talk of conscription makes me feel sick - that's our children

Desecratedcoconut · 20/01/2024 11:56

Meh, Nato increased it's contributions by 12% for 2024. They have to make that increase palatable for the various member tax payers some how. Yes, tensions are rising and an increased level of readiness is demanded to demonstrate strength but the narrative of world wars is just hyperbolic language to engineer compliance.

Well (a) given human beings, it is always a significant risk, and (b) since NATO pretty much exist to spend vast amounts of money on arms and armies, they are not very likely to be predicting world peace in 20 years!

Silverbirchtwo · 20/01/2024 11:58

It's been a significant risk since the 1970s.

Russia are struggling to defeat Ukraine, think they will struggle to take on the combined forces of Nato.

They would be guaranteeing their own destruction if they did use nuclear weapons, because nuclear weapons would be used against them in retaliation.

Yep. That's the bit that concerns me the most.

I'm not worried about nuclear weapons. On fact, if they get used, hopefully I get taken out by the first one. But the thought of my children being forced to enlist - well, as I said I'm not going to worry about what might happen. But I would struggle to cope with that.
