To watch the same thing over and over because it brings comfort

I’ve recently discovered a TV series I love and it feels very comforting to me to watch it.
Each time I finish all the episodes I start them again. I’m on the 4th time in a row of watching them now.

My DP thinks I’m crazy and keeps asking why I’m not bored of it yet.

Am I mad or does anyone else do this?

@Misty Memory

Sorry to sidetrack but do you also forget faces of people you have met?

Amaya4 · 20/01/2024 08:40

Every September 1st . . . I start my Gilmore Girls re-watch. It's like a comfort blanket.

I’ve just discovered a podcast called Comfort Blanket, where guests talk about the films and TV shows they watch over and over, so it’s not just us!

A few of the Ghosts cast are on it, as well 😀

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 20/01/2024 08:47

We do this a lot - we have about 7 shows that we repeatedly watch. Ghosts is one of them - it's fabulous. Every December we start rewatching Life on Mars and then Ashes to Ashes - one episode a night until the middle of January - it's been a tradition for the past few years and one I don't see us ending anytime soon. Luckily, we both like to watch the same shows repeatedly! Occasionally we start new series, but we always go back to the old ones eventually!!

I'm looking for a new tv series to watch obsessively.

Just googled Ghosts and it's American? Am I on the right track?

Toucanfusingforme · 20/01/2024 09:42

You need the UK version (the original). Which is the best. BBC.

I even have a pretty much daily routine (unless I have to be out)!
I watch Frasier in the mornings, Murder, She Wrote early evenings, always Pointless on catch-up later and, on Sundays, I usually binge on Columbo!

SmellyKat10 · 20/01/2024 09:52

Greys Anatomy for me.

At this point I feel like I could probably have a good go at removing someone’s appendix.

Do the same with books. DD does the same with music.

Another family member doesn't.

Anacdata: 2/3 of autistic people tested (sample size 3) reread/listen to stuff.

I haven't watched Ghosts but sounds like I need to give it a go.

I do this, but not back to back - need a bit of time to elapse (and reality is I'll be watching with my DH and he always wants more time to have elapsed before he won't be bored by it - I'm ready to go back to something easy sooner than he is). We do it with 30 min comedy programmes that are easy and we can stick an episode or two on before bed without having to think ages about what to watch and also because we watch a lot of crime dramas, lot of gritty detective series etc so want something light and easy before bed. Brooklyn 99 and How I met your Mother.

Just rewatching Derry Girls as it's brilliant. Would fancy watching Stella again as that is also comforting and warm.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 20/01/2024 10:10

I totally do this and have 3 different series I switch between. Some times I just select my favourite episodes, other times I do a full rewatch.

Although one of my faves had 15 seasons so a full re-watch takes a while (and if you can tell where my name comes from, you can identify said show).

It just makes me happy! These are shows that started 20 years ago, I still adore them.

Woman2023 · 20/01/2024 11:20

Just started watching Ghosts last night, good first couple of episodes.

We used to watch Friends daily as it was on during dinner. I can definitely enjoy a lot of repetition.

I did this for years with a TV show that had about 10 series, this was before netflix/prime etc and I had it on DVD. I only stopped about two years ago.

During the watching years I was in a very bad place mentally and heavily relied on this show, I pretty much didn't watch anything else.

I'm glad I'm in a place now where I don't need it.

@MistyMemory

I have this too! When I watch a series or film I've seen before for the second or more times, I can't remember a single thing. It's brand new to me. DH thinks it's odd. I never had any idea what the cause could be but I also have temporal lobe epilepsy so, based on our non scientific sample of two, it sounds like that's definitely a factor!

I forget peoples faces instantly, unless I know them really well.

That's so interesting, mine is temporal lobe (I think the left hand side, ironically can't remember!) I have speech and language issues too (esp word recall)

When my marriage broke up very suddenly and traumatically (for me, obviously not for him) I couldn't watch anything except Come Dine With Me. I found myself absolutely transfixed and would watch it continually. Somehow the low level competition and the food and the characters pulled me out of my dreadful depression. We should never underestimate the power of gentle TV to take us away from our awful every day and to help our brains heal themselves.
