To watch the same thing over and over because it brings comfort

I’ve recently discovered a TV series I love and it feels very comforting to me to watch it.
Each time I finish all the episodes I start them again. I’m on the 4th time in a row of watching them now.

My DP thinks I’m crazy and keeps asking why I’m not bored of it yet.

Am I mad or does anyone else do this?

I have rewatched shows but not back to back, it’s linked to anxiety often apparently not saying you have anxiety obviously.

Every year I do a Gilmore Girls marathon, then a buffy one then supernatural.
They’re my happy series

Oh yes some of my DC and I have certain films we only watch at certain times of the year! Each year naturally Grin

It's Downton Abbey for me. Makes me feel calm and I love the aesthetics of it all. Got to be 6-7 times I have watched every series now. (The second film only once though. It was a bit like candy floss and tied things up too nicely).

I re-watch The Detectorists regularly! Very comforting

This was what I turned to in the early days of the first lockdown. Couldn't take the uncertainty of starting on a new, unfamiliar show! It was a very reassuring re-watch.

I do this

With Benidorm (hence my name 😂), The office both uk and US, extras, Derek, afterlife, this country, peep show, the list goes on

I discovered Benidorm for the first time a few months ago! I have no idea how it passed me by but it had.

Binge watched non-stop. But when the Garveys left the series I stopped after a bit. What a great character she was!

RaininSummer · 19/01/2024 17:24

We do this with Frasier and I would do it now with outlander if they hadn't moved it from Prime

bettynutkins · 19/01/2024 17:24

I do this with Gavin and Stacey. It's always on the go. Husband just laughs when he sees it on now

Mrsjayy · 19/01/2024 17:26

I do this with Gavin and Stacey. It's always on the go. Husband just laughs when he sees it on now

but it doesn't matter what episode it is you know you will enjoy it your Dh just doesn't "get it"

GraceyDoodles · 19/01/2024 17:27

My favourite is Stacey Solomon 'Sort your life out'. I've watched all 3 series on repeat. So comforting.

And 'Heartstopper' on Netflix. Just because I love the story.

Elfyny · 19/01/2024 17:28

I do this. It's soothing. I am adhd and possibly autistic, its quite common among the ND community.

DogualCat · 19/01/2024 17:28

I’ve had an awful time since last summer and the stress has ruined my concentration. I can’t watch anything new, only gentle tv I’ve seen multiple times. Lots of old comedies, old detective and crime dramas, nothing that is taxing. I was discussing it with my counsellor and she was talking about it being a bit like mindfulness, it’s distracting me from my problems but also making me use my brain for something other than stress and worry. My brain is too overwhelmed for anything else. It’s a bit sad as I’d love to be able to start on the list of programmes I have saved up but I don’t have the brain capacity at the moment.

MILTOBE · 19/01/2024 17:28

Oh yes, I love "Sort Your Life Out" too!

Moier · 19/01/2024 17:29

First time l had Covid ( before vaccinations) l was seriously ill.
It was horrific.. but during in recovery l watched Call the Midwife from start to finish because it gave me comfort.
I had covid for 5th time in September and did the same again.
I can't see any harm in it at all .
Enjoy.

Jifmicroliquid · 19/01/2024 17:30

I do this all the time. I’ve been watching the first 4 series of the brittas empire for the last 12 months, over and over. I’ll sometimes watch the same episode 3 times in a row.

I have autism and find it very comforting.

GraceyDoodles · 19/01/2024 17:31

@Eggsandspam have you watched 'Here we go' on bbc iplayer? The actor who plays the ghost with the arrow through his neck is in it. It's just east and comforting, very similar to ghosts in that way. Would recommend, I have watched that back to back.

JennyBeanR · 19/01/2024 17:31

I do this all the time. Line of duty, game of thrones, law and order to name a few.
I also find it relaxing/comforting. It's a great way to unwind.

bctf123 · 19/01/2024 17:34

I do this but alone, not with people

Dis626 · 19/01/2024 17:37

I do this with Outnumbered, 2 Point 4 Children, Gavin and Stacey and Friends.

gluggle · 19/01/2024 17:41

ManateeFair · 19/01/2024 16:40

I was told it’s an anxiety / ADHD trait

It's also a trait of people who have neither of those things.

Medicalising the enjoyment of a cosy TV show is peak Mumsnet.

Enjoyment of a TV show and rewatching something excessively aren't really the same thing though, and it is common amongst ND people.

My autistic DD has watched all the seasons of Stranger Things 11 times over. The predictability in an unpredictable world is very comforting

QueenCamilla · 19/01/2024 17:42

I have ADHD and I can barely imagine anything worse than rewatching something over and over again. I need novelty and excitement, not "comfort blankets". I don't even finish most series (or movies) once - I tend to lose interest at some point.
ADHD does not equal ASD.
Like bacterial meningitis does not equal diabetes just because both might show a symptom of headache. But I probably need a different thread on this topic.

I'm quite surprised how common this rewatching seems to be. I thought only children and child-like adults did this. I stand corrected!

LlynTegid · 19/01/2024 17:44

Nothing wrong with that at all as long as no-one else is expected to watch it with you.

Not for me, each to their own though.

Ruminate2much · 19/01/2024 17:45

I get it. I think it's fairly common, and with films too. Same with re-reading familiar novels...

diddl · 19/01/2024 17:50

Poirot & Miss Marple for me!

TwoStepsAhead34 · 19/01/2024 17:57

I do it too! I WFH and my days are filled with repeat background noise of the following:
The Sopranos
Peaky Blinders
Poldark
Undercover
Lilyhammer
Ferry: the series
Yellowstone

Legend (with Tom Hardy)
Ferry
Hangover (all 3)
Transporter
Taken

  • sometimes I wonder to YouTube and watch murder mysteries, but that's rarely.

All of the above are in constant repeat. Can probably quote them all.

RonObvious · 19/01/2024 17:58

I hate to think how many hours I have spent watching and rewatching Agatha Christie adaptations.
