To watch the same thing over and over because it brings comfort

I’ve recently discovered a TV series I love and it feels very comforting to me to watch it.
Each time I finish all the episodes I start them again. I’m on the 4th time in a row of watching them now.

My DP thinks I’m crazy and keeps asking why I’m not bored of it yet.

Am I mad or does anyone else do this?

I was told it’s an anxiety / ADHD trait

It's also a trait of people who have neither of those things.

Medicalising the enjoyment of a cosy TV show is peak Mumsnet.

zingally · 19/01/2024 16:40

I've been doing this with 'Call The Midwife' for years!

I've also found myself starting to do it with Schitts Creek.

CallMeMabel · 19/01/2024 16:41

I love Ghosts, me & DD have watched it all a fews times now. It's my favourite comfort show.

I love Ghosts and totally get re-watching something because of the comforting feel it gives you. I do this with comedies such as Blackadder and dinnerladies on Gold and I enjoy a yearly re-watch of the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. As a teenager I used to watch Dirty Dancing on a weekly basis!

Yes the yearly rewatch of P&P is a must!

Dominoeffecter · 19/01/2024 16:42

I do this, currently doing it with ‘Two doors down’

HeartandSeoul · 19/01/2024 16:43

OP, (and any other fan of BBC Ghosts), I highly recommend a visit to the filming location (West Horsley Place, Surrey). It’s amazing!

Gold is my comfort channel always a Gavin and Stacey or something to watch.but it's usually Gavin &Stacey

I do it sometimes. Have watched Interview with the Vampire a few times, especially the first episode.
Watching Father Ted with my kids at moment.

BingoMarieHeeler · 19/01/2024 16:44

That’s a totally normal thing to do. That was the whole point of box sets from decades back wasn’t it?? You know what’s coming, so it’s good for anxiety etc.

letsbepositive2024 · 19/01/2024 16:44

Watched Ghosts at least four times. Marvellous

oh I have a feeling you are in the FB group 😀

DyslexicPoster · 19/01/2024 16:44

I do this but with films. My current favourite I must see about once a week.

greasypolemonkeyman · 19/01/2024 16:46

I get it totally. I love reading and recently discovered the joy of an audio book. I've got the same 12 on a cycle but I often listen to pride and prejudice twice. I love to watch the movie and bbc series too.

My DH died look at me a bit like in crazy and has gently teased me about it but then I point out that he's watching a final match from the 70s and he shuts up pretty quickly 😂

DustyLee123 · 19/01/2024 16:46

I have things I watch over and over, and I’m the same with books.
Ive bought other books and been disappointed.

justaboutdonenow · 19/01/2024 16:48

@greasypolemonkeyman me & OH love audiobooks, always have one in the background to drift off to at night, usually a Harry Potter, Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 19/01/2024 16:49

I do it with Doc Martin.
Instant happy place 😁

TranscendingTheSituation · 19/01/2024 16:50

I don’t watch the same show back to back but I do have certain shows that I watch over and over again. Mainly, Brooklyn 99, Schitt’s Creek and The Big Bang Theory. I find it comforting to have something I don’t really need to watch playing in the background as I do other things.

Oddly enough, I only do it with shows. I almost never watch movies and if I do only once.

MILTOBE · 19/01/2024 16:55

@MistyMemory Do you know the cause of your poor memory?

kerstina · 19/01/2024 17:01

My comfort tv would be The Royle family, Motherland ,The Dog house .

MILTOBE · 19/01/2024 17:03

I don't do this as much as you, OP, but there are certainly things I will watch if I'm feeling low and they always make me feel happy. I could put on any episode of Gavin and Stacey and within a few minutes I will have cheered up.

HeyDiggity · 19/01/2024 17:09

I do this as background watching on the iPad whilst tidying, sorting, washing up. Brooklyn 99, Suits, Greys, Better Things.

Danikm151 · 19/01/2024 17:12

Every year I do a Gilmore Girls marathon, then a buffy one then supernatural.
They’re my happy series

Characterbuilding · 19/01/2024 17:12

I’ve done this since as long as I can remember. It’s almost like a form of meditation/relaxation. There are no surprises and I can effectively switch off or zone out. It’s particularly helpful if I’m overwrought.

Salome61 · 19/01/2024 17:13

If you fancy a change, you might like Virgin River - and then Sweet Magnolias. Do read the for Virgin River, trigger alert.

@MistyMemory Do you know the cause of your poor memory?

I have epilepsy but so far they haven't been able to trace the "cause" of it (and might not be able to) Some of the meds might also have had a adverse effect. Some old memories are just totally gone (I don't remember at all the birth of my third child and that surrounding period for example) and my working memory is very poor. Some days are better than others.
