To ask you to show me your fridge?

Please!

I'm somewhat fascinated by people's fridges. Whenever I watched MTV cribs when younger I only cared about what was inside the fridges.

Anyone else like me?

I'll start with mine. (Yes I know it's not very well organised but I did a food shop today and had to rush and put it away before doing the school run)

Bottom drawers: fruit and veg
Bottom shelf: fruit and veg that doesn't fit in drawers
Next shelf: yogurts, dairy and desserts.
Next shelf: meat, fish and poultry with fresh pasta as I couldn't fit it anywhere else
Next shelf: miscellaneous stuff

I know it's not very organised. :)

apples - We eat lots, so keep the unopened packs in the fridge so they stay crisp. Apples sitting out for a couple of weeks go soft
eggs - they don't need to be int he fridge, but if they aren't then you need to find space for them somewhere else. Full fridge is fine, if they fit they fit.
tomatoes - I'm with you on that one, we keep ours out, they tatse better, but the down side is that in warmer weathe rthey go off really quickly.
ketchup/brown sauce etc. - they don't need to be, but again, if not in the fridge then you need to find space elsewhere, and what else goes on that silly middle door shelf?
milk in door - well no milk in our house lasts long enough to go off in the door, and milk is very easy to tell if it is off, and even if you drink it off it won't hurt you, so milk goes in the door (unless you have 5 x 4 pints like we do,and then one in the door and the rest on the shelf!)

meat - uncooked should be on a lower shelf than cooked, due to cross contamination. I agree with this actually, meat on lowest shelf. But I didn't know this for years and somehow survived.

Honestly, it really doesn't matter what people want to keep in their fridge or not, let's be radical and decide for oursleves!

@DoodleMum12 do a before and after picture. I'm learning a lot more about real life people from looking at the half empty fridges with too many jars of doom.

Whiskers4 · 17/01/2024 11:20

Top back shelf - 3 types of cheese
Then yogurts and jars
Next salmon, fishcakes, last night's leftovers and kidney beans in red container
Salad drawer, lettuce, one carrot, two peppers and half bag spinach

Only three of us and supermarket next to work, so can easily get anything fresh we want most days

My top advice is not to put 3 4-pint bottles of milk in the door.
The shelf will break and you will have milk all over the floor.

Milk now stored in a shelf at the bottom. Annoying as they take up too much space standing up.
Out at the mo so no pic sorry. But love the thread OP. And pleased to see everyone else has random jars...

(Eggs are in fridge, fruit is not)

That's a lot of food!! We have one of those useless, tiny, under counter fridges and it's still bare😂

Mine too. It looks so sad!

100% Scottish household.

😂 guilty

Keeponkeepigon · 17/01/2024 13:15

Sad empty-ish fridge here. Although you’ve all prompted me to give it a quick clean!

Am I the only person with a milkman? Bit sad about that! I'd hate to have those huge plastic bottles cluttering up my (admittedly already cluttered) fridge.

Keeponkeepigon · 17/01/2024 13:21

Our milkman delivers plastic bottles!

msmatcha · 17/01/2024 13:23

No way!!! I had no idea! Now feel like I live in the dark ages.

Keeponkeepigon · 17/01/2024 13:27

It’s a new world! Booze fridges look happier - still have Shloer from Christmas. Must remember to not buy it next year.

I have that cream cheese! It’s so delicious!! I sometimes have it on a toasted crumpets with a dollop of peach jam

PandaCwtch · 17/01/2024 13:37

@baldpenguine if you are doing a rejig to take things out, leave the eggs where they are for now.

Eggs bought off the shelf are totally safe to stay out of the fridge, but once they've been in the fridge taking them out to room temp will result in them getting wet on the outside, which destroys the protective coating, allowing bacteria in. In countries where eggs are sold in the fridge, this is because the eggs are washed before sale, which removes the coating. Once eggs have gone into a fridge, they need to stay in there.

hellsBells246 · 17/01/2024 13:49

Put your raw meat on the bottom shelf!!

Your fridge is far too busy for me. I'd hate that. How do you keep track of the dates on everything?!

It’s the best one! That’s sounds delicious - I’m going to try that 🍑

Deadringer · 17/01/2024 13:58

I used to keep the raw meat on the bottom shelf but don't bother any more, the shelves are glass so nothing can drip through them.

Deadringer · 17/01/2024 14:04

We changed to a bigger fridge about a year ago and its been brilliant. Halfway between shops but i picked up a few things today. Its messy and probably needs a clean but here goes.

Bit empty, big shop every Friday.

You may notice the empty bit top right, it had a flip down cover which got caught on my jumper one year and got yanked off and broken never to be replaced.

I'm intrigued by the slant on the cucumber. Do you cut your cucumbers in italics?

The things with the closer use by dates go at the front, the things with longer shelf life go at the back

I also meal plan and have it on a whiteboard in the kitchen so know which ingredients to use and when

This is ours , it is a lot emptier than usual as I’m having an eat out of the freezer / cupboard month to empty the 2 freezers . Bottom drawer is veg and salad , the next 2 drawers are cooked meats in one and uncooked in the other and above that is self explanatory .

You already know about the meat, but don’t put fish next to it. Eggs can stay but be very careful what you put next to them. I’m sure I can see a pair of shoes in there as well 🤭 Potatoes 😆. I used to keep onions in mine. Potatoes & onions are stored separately, preferably in a dark cupboard.

KissMyArt · 16/01/2024 17:54

Fuck dripping milk all over the fridge, I'd rather store it in the door like I have all my life.

It's never made a difference to the freshness Blush

I'm with you!
