AIBU to find Liza Tarbuck annoying ?

I stumbled across her Radio 2 programme earlier this evening whilst exploring the various stations. I didn't know who it was until she mentioned her own name. Admittedly she did play some decent music but managed to talk utter drivel between every record. I didn't think it was possible to have access to a bottomless pit of verbal vacuous nonsense but evidently it is. I'm fully prepared to be told that lots of people like her and that's her broadcasting style and I am therefore BU. I don't think I'll be tuning in again.

For context, I was listening to Clive Anderson on Radio 4 beforehand and he can be cringeworthy at times. But nothing like Liza Tarbuck. BTW, does she put that voice on or is it her normal speech?

I love it.
It's not for everyone, but then I find both Jeremy Vine and Elaine Page make me want to throw myself down the stairs.

ByTheSea · 14/01/2024 14:27

YANBU, she grates...

Waitingfordoggo · 14/01/2024 14:35

It always a bit of a stream of consciousness isn’t it? I find her musings quite amusing though. She plays some absolutely brilliant records. I’ve discovered quite a lot of new (to me) music from her show.

I really can’t listen to Elaine Page on R4 which is a shame because I like musicals and showtunes. Elaine always sounds pissed and also likes to name drop and persistently make reference to her own stage career.

I started in your camp OP, always took the kids swimming Saturday teatime and finished at 6 so in the car on the way home it'd be Liza and I'd last 5 minutes before switching her annoying random drivel show off. Dunno what happened but over time I started to find her less annoying. Then saw her on taskmaster and loved her. Haven't looked back with her show since, I think she's great and love listening.

New2024 · 14/01/2024 14:37

Sara Cox and Lauren Laverne are the 2 presenters that make me switch channels

UnctuousUnicorns · 14/01/2024 14:38

I think she's the human, female version of Brian the snail from The Magic Roundabout.

AloeNora · 14/01/2024 14:41

Cerys is on 6Music. I tend to find her a bit earnest about music but she’s growing on me, a little.

Hello Liza 👋

Or Jimmy.

Xanadu58 · 14/01/2024 15:19

I love Liza , I think her radio show is brilliant.

ArcaneWireless · 14/01/2024 15:33

Love her.

My dream Taskmaster would have had Liza, Jo Brand, Daisy May Cooper, Sarah Millican and Judi Love.

It would probably not be far off my dream BBC2. Although I’d have Bridget Christie somewhere in the mix.

I would say your sense of humour is non-existent on this evidence Perhaps.

Thedogscollar is obviously joking.

Thanks for that insight.

In the interests of gender balance, I think Pick of the Pops has gone spectacularly downhill since Steve Wright took over from Paul Gambaccini. POTP is one of those programmes where the music is more important than the presenter and PG respected this and brought his encyclopaedic knowledge to the programme. Steve Wright doesn't and still witters and 'sings' over the records as if he were still doing his afternoon 'big show'. I can imagine Liza Tarbuck having a similar egotistical approach if she got to present POTP.

Cerys is awesome. She takes you literally everywhere, any genre, any direction. She’s the best.

Willmafrockfit · 14/01/2024 19:41

oh i havent listened to this yet @TheTecknician
i liked gambacinni but was pleased SW had the gig, for his sake, because it was sad he was booted off in the afternoons to be replaced by whathisname,

BringMeTea · 14/01/2024 20:07

Liza, Paddy O'Connell, Claudia and Eddie Mair. A highly satisfactory dinner table.

I agree. I loved PG’s Pick of the Pops. Steve Wright in the afternoon was on my No list too though.

HighlandCowSaysBooNotMoo · 14/01/2024 22:41

I absolutely LOVE LT..
I can not stand Claudia Winkleman on the Sat morn slot she does though, I find her so irritating to listen to. I did whoop out loud when she announced she was packing it in...

SandandSky · 14/01/2024 23:14

I actually really like her!

Absolutely agree, I used to love listening when PG hosted, such a soothing voice and knowledgable. I can't listen now Steve Wright presents it, he cuts the records short with his inane comments or worse singing. Eugh.

LlynTegid · 15/01/2024 08:48

@TheTecknician I think Steve Wright knows something about a senior BBC executive that he is keeping quiet, as I cannot find a good reason why he is still on the BBC. The politest thing I can say is his shows are dated.

LittleMonks11 · 15/01/2024 08:51

I love her show. I always listen when I'm cooking. She plays great music.

It's all a bit daft in between songs - so I can imagine it being annoying to people 'not in the mood' though.

RaraRachael · 15/01/2024 12:25

@LlynTegid I've always wondered why Steve Wright has been kept on all these years - that's a very good point. I was glad when they got rid of him from the afternoon show - just wish they'd do the same with his dire Sunday Love Songs. I scream at the radio every time he talks or "sings" over the ends of songs.

I never liked Terry Wogan as I found his show to be like some exclusive club so if you didn't listen regularly a lot of it went over your head and I suspect Liza Tarbuck's show is in the same mould, I've no idea if she plays great music as I turn off as soon as she comes on.

I could never understand the weeping and wailing at Ken Bruce's departure. I found his show quite bland and boring.
I loved Simon Mayo, Graham Norton and Paul O'Grady.

LindorDoubleChoc · 15/01/2024 15:16

I'm SO glad I'll never have to listen to Paul Gambacinni on POTP again. The stupid puns and vocal gymnastics he put on during the countdown made me cringe and often switch off.

I had a really long break from R2 over Christmas because no matter what time of day I tuned in, it was always Gary fucking Woo Davis on. That man is my radio DJ nemesis and R2 only seem to have his phone number when it comes to finding someone to provide cover. An absolute nightmare for me.

I might not go back to R2, or at least only for Sara Cox and Liza Tarbuck. All my other favourites - Graham Norton, Paul O'Grady and now Claudia aren't there any more Sad.

Iwannerbeyourslave · 17/01/2024 08:50

We did! Not interested in long-standing jokes, which are probably not funny. If I wanted talk, i'd do R4. Still rubbish in my opinion.

FatherDickByrne · 17/01/2024 09:24

Team Tarby here. Listening to her reminds me of catching the bus to school with my best friend and snorting with laughter the whole way.

Loved Ken Bruce. Can’t stand Gary Davis.
