Breaking news; UK signing off on air strikes against Yemen. Is this just going to get worse ?

Since having kids this honestly petrifies me. This world is a mess! I feel like it's one thing since another ever since Covid nothing has felt the same at all! Life before that almost feels completely different and a blur ! Anyone else?

What annoys me is most people in this country do not support Israel’s actions since the Hamas attack . I certainly don’t but now it’s our country (in our name) is now in conflict with Yemen who is one of the few places who are trying to fight back against the annihilation that is going on in Gaza.
As the BBC news has just said ‘There are two ways at looking at this conflict’ but I can guess which way the UK’s media narrative will be.
As for the 2.5 billion pounds Sunak has just given in military aid to Ukraine. What a shame there isn’t the same sort of investment in peace.

This echoes another poster who referred to Hamas as "bad people" Confused

Do you really think that Houthi are to be applauded?

Oh dear

kerstina · 13/01/2024 10:54

I didn’t say they were good people .DH thinks they are just opportunists which they probably are .My point is no one is really standing up for ordinary Palestinian’s they are just seen as collateral in a war against Hamas. Would Hamas have even been voted in the first place if the people there had not been oppressed for years .Every few years the bulldozers going in . 1% of the population has been killed in Gaza in this war.

I don’t support Houthi but I don’t see anyone trying to really stop what is happening in Gaza .The UN are getting nowhere ?

The Houthi slogan and chant is "God Is the Greatest, Death to America, Death to Israel, A Curse Upon the Jews, Victory to Islam".

The Houthis are armed and directed by Iran.

This has got nothing to do with the plight of Palestinians. The Houthis don’t care about Palestinians. It’s pure violence from a group of antisemitic terrorist crazies, connived at by Iran. (Just as Iran sponsors and directs Hamas and Hezbollah.)

In the anti-Israel movement people should be careful about who they side with and who they oppose. Unless of course they’re motivated by antisemitism. In which case their arguments are worthless and disgraceful.

@kerstina does this sound like something we should back?

kerstina · 13/01/2024 11:06

I have a Jewish friend in America who has similar views to myself .Why does everyone who is appalled at the Gaza war and speaks out against it have to be antisemitic ? I am against the actions of Israel in this war.

You seem to think that just because you can't see anyone shooting missiles into Israel that no one is working behind the scenes to alleviate the situation in Gaza.

There are immense diplomatic efforts going on to moderate Israel's actions, get in aid, negotiate hostage releases, negotiate post-war peace plans and so on.

And yet it is the terrorists attacking Danish ships that get your praise. Hmm

kerstina · 13/01/2024 11:09

I hear you Noblegiraffe and hope you are right. I am in awe of the aid workers trying to do their best too.

Ginmonkeyagain · 13/01/2024 11:28

Even if the Houthis were genuinely concerned about Gaza and were making a noble and selfless effort to stop Israeli action, firing missiles at innocent civilian cargo ships is not really on is it?

OliviaSW1 · 13/01/2024 11:47

the Houthi attacks on ships have been indiscriminate and nothing to do with Israel. The Houthi’s are a violent extremist militant group responsible for the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Yemeni people over the past decade, instability and abject misery in the area they ‘control’ by force and violence.

Exactly, this does absolutely nothing to support Hamas or the people of Palestine. This action is designed to damage the west ( ie us) and is playing out as part of a wider Cold War we are now embroiled in.

PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice · 13/01/2024 12:27

If the UK militarily intervened in a civil war or any war that had little to do with us directly (wars affect global stability and but not all have immediate, direct effect on UK and allies) the government would be widely and heavily criticised.
You’re saying if the UK doesn’t intervene, it’s because we don’t care. Can’t win!

The UK can’t and shouldn’t intervene militarily in every conflict worldwide, of course. Diplomatically, yes, appropriate in order to help resolve disputes, and providing aid.

The Houthi group, backed by Iran, has been attacking commercial ships and US/UK warships and helicopters. They continued despite warnings. These air strikes were not on the Yemeni people but on the sites used by Houthi to launch rockets. I think it was a reasonable course of action, taken after numerous warnings.

If people are so moved by this, why haven’t they been moved by the hundreds of thousands of Yemeni people who have died in the civil war between the Iran-backed Houthi and Saudi-backed Yemeni government over the last few years?

As a Raf mother I get scared at times, but put it to the back of my mind or I'd go mad

PrawnDumplings · 13/01/2024 17:12

The Tories are trying to distract voters from the fact they've been supplying arms to Israel so they can kill women & children. Disgraceful.

I do worry, especially for younger generations. And those who think it won’t impact them, tax payers money pays for such air attacks. Why can’t the UK government just butt out of this one?

Because they care very much about trade. Innocent lives? Not so much. Fuckers.

What are the Houthis trying to achieve by attacking Danish shipping vessels that has even the remotest relevance to Israel?
