Why do people spend so much money on these?

AIBU to think that the only possible reason for having a PNP is to be a bit braggy?

My DP wants to get me one for my upcoming birthday, I have said it is a waste of money and to not bother. DP doesn't understand.

Your thoughts?

I've been told my car is chavvy

MadameCamembert · 13/01/2024 12:33

PeggyPoggleshaw · 13/01/2024 11:54

I drive a Lexus LC.

Others to consider to name a few are:

Toyota
Infinity
Alfa Romeo
Cupra
Seat
Volvo
Genesis
Alpine
Maserati
Kia
Hyundai
Polestar
DS
Subaru
Fisker
Mitsubishi

Many, many different options that aren't the usual predictable German sheepmobiles.

A Fisker? You’ve literally just googled a list of cars and taken anything you deem as being flashy off it. Tell me, what are the pros of a Fisker?

I’m glad one of my vehicles is on your list, phew!

decisionssmecisions · 13/01/2024 12:43

never heard of Fisker!

tbf where I live a Volvo is a sheepmobile 😆

decisionssmecisions · 13/01/2024 12:43

@PeggyPoggleshaw im honoured

Comedycook · 13/01/2024 13:07

I don't think individual makes of cars are chavvy or brag worthy necessarily....but I find brand new white 4x4s of any brand to be the ultimate twat mobile, combined with a private plate and I know already I would never ever get on with whoever is driving it ...I honestly wouldn't drive one if you paid me...so embarrassing

Wrong. I'm a car enthusiast and have been since I was a kid. Fisker are an American manufacturer who make electric cars. The pros? They're as rare as hens teeth.

Also, there are plenty of cars on that list that can be described as 'flashy'.

🤷‍♀️ I’ve don’t really understand why personalised number plates are important to some people but each to their own! Your DP obviously likes them and thinks they’re special. If you don’t want one that’s your choice and fair enough, I’m sure DP would rather get you something you actually want!

Does your lack of understanding only apply to personalized number plates or do you not understand why anyone finds different things important to you?

SmellycCat · 13/01/2024 18:20

Number plates can be an investment without any maintenance costs!
My plate I purchased for £4000 is now worth nearly £20,000. & the plate I brought for £280, for my son, its now worth over £3000.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 13/01/2024 18:41

These are actually the most popular car brands in the UK. I was surprised to see Vauxhall so far down the list.

  1. VW
  2. Ford
  3. Audi
  4. BMW
  5. Toyota
  6. Kia
  7. Vauxhall
  8. Mercedes

Not surprised to see Kia, I have one and I know a lot of people with them and we all bought them for the same reason.......the 7 year warranty that is actually a proper warranty! There is a reason that there is always a glut of 7 year old kia's for sale!

I’d prefer a car that never goes wrong over one that has a great warranty, just my preference.
It’s hypothetical in my case as I drive an 18 year old Mercedes.

DuchessOfSausage · 14/01/2024 09:55

@WeeJimmycranky , Kias have a good reputation for reliability.
MB is just average and are usually expensive to repair.

Justgorgeous · 14/01/2024 10:00

I cringe when I see one, I find them tacky.

hookiewookie29 · 14/01/2024 10:07

We bought personalised plates for our daughter for her 18th. It's what she really wanted, and she can put them on any car that she buys. So she'll have them forever!
Technically speaking, we all have personalised number plates, because every one is different!

DuchessOfSausage · 14/01/2024 10:13

@hookiewookie29 , My car had two previous owners. It had the same reg when the previous owners had it. The registration is not personalised

HarrietStyles · 14/01/2024 10:29

So I have my initials as a numberplate, a kitchen island, a Chanel handbag and I bought all of the above because I like them…….. but apparently because I like spending my money on things that bring me pleasure, rather than what Janet on Mumsnet thinks I should spend my money on, that makes me a twat, wanky, chavvy, tasteless, a show off etc etc 😂 Oh well, I also like going to Museums and art galleries regularly, maybe that counteracts some of my twatiness?

DuchessOfSausage · 14/01/2024 10:57

@HarrietStyles, by the tone of your post, probably not.

Kia have an excellent reputation for reliability and build quality, unlike Mercs. It seems like yours is the exception to the rule.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 14/01/2024 11:15

Still waiting to be told what's wrong with a kitchen island, apart from the fact a lot of kitchens aren't big enough for them. Including mine.

Oakbeam · 14/01/2024 11:22

So I have my initials as a numberplate, a kitchen island

Presumably, that is just so that you don’t get your kitchen island mixed up with all the others in the kitchen.

I have my initials on a old Thermos flask.

Comedycook · 14/01/2024 11:23

I can understand designer bags and kitchen islands and hot tubs. They all serve a practical purpose. Designer bags looks nice...they make an outfit look nice. They hold your stuff. A kitchen island is a useful addition to a kitchen providing more workspace or a place to congregate. I can see why people may want these things. I cannot see why anyone would care about the configuration of the letters and numbers on their number plate.

Oakbeam · 14/01/2024 12:12

And a car is a convenient tool to transport people and luggage. If initials on a kitchen island are acceptable, why not on a car?
