Why do people spend so much money on these?

AIBU to think that the only possible reason for having a PNP is to be a bit braggy?

My DP wants to get me one for my upcoming birthday, I have said it is a waste of money and to not bother. DP doesn't understand.

Your thoughts?

I have one. It says my name. It’s a rare plate and I got it for a good price at auction. It’s now worth thousands. I’m ten years it will be worth thousands more. If anything, it’s a great investment.

Eskimal · 12/01/2024 12:23

Look up the Simon brodkin sketch on these :)

Magpie2310 · 12/01/2024 14:55

Not being unreasonable but each to their own.
I couldn't wait to learn to drive so I could get a personalised plate, I don't know why, it was just something I always wanted. And mine only cost £300 - a new phone costs more but no one would bat an eyelid at that expense, and phones don't last as long (unless you're my mum and go through 3 plates in 10 years haha).
My husband always said people with personalised plates were weird - being the only one in our family without one - but he now has one after I bought one he liked for his birthday. Again, only a few hundred quid.
I don't actually see what I've spent as a ridiculous expense, it's going to last a while and I'm happy with it.

I don't see the OP labelling someone "braggy" for owning an Audi though.

Owning an Audi certainly isn't 'braggy', more 'unimaginative' and 'chavvy'.

Wow that's rude. And I've never owned an Audi.

Diangled · 12/01/2024 16:25

I have one, my late DH bought it for me when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I’d just bought a new car but the plate bugged me.
I love that whatever car I buy in the future the plate comes with me. Very personal choice. Who knew they were so divisive!

Not rude, just stating facts. The same goes for BMWs and Mercs.

For that matter “cherished” is such a silly term for used, second hand number plates. Imagine calling a dress from the charity shop cherished or something.

So Audi, BMW and Mercs are all chavvy!

Wow. I’d be interested to hear the approved car list?

Iwantmyoldnameback · 12/01/2024 09:59

This. People changed their cars much less before it was so easy to tell the year. Of course the majority of new cars now are leased anyway.

So people changed their cars less often before 1963?

zingally · 13/01/2024 10:28

I've always thought it was pretty wanky tbh.

I used to work for the DVLA and would see all sorts of crap ones. And they're EXPENSIVE. And this was getting on for 20 years ago, so I dread to think what they might cost now!

Never heard of “pre-loved”?

Yep, all common as muck, driven by sheeple with no imagination whatsoever who ironically think they're something special when in reality they're absolutely everywhere.

Nerurio · 13/01/2024 11:19

Embarrassingly, I had one years ago. Long since got rid. My parents had them too, one sold it when they last changed cars as couldn't be bothered with it, the other was given it as a gift and has never so much as had the plates made up as doesn't actually want one.
I don't like giving away information about myself either, no matter how little. I know the name and surname initial of one of my business neighbours because it's very obviously on her personalised plate (along the lines of "AH61 AVA").

Mine was £250 around 10 years ago, plus £80 to reassign every time you changed car!

What do you drive?

WeeJimmycranky · 13/01/2024 11:31

I actually had one that was on a car I bought (for £1500). Although I think they are wanky it was a good car and the plate wasn’t worth much if anything (it was H6 and the previous owner’s initials) so I kept it. It was a slight advantage being shorter so easier to remember. I never removed it as it would have cost money. Sold with the car when it went.

Hmmm… I wouldn’t be too sure until the list is released.
However, I think Hyacinth Bucket might allow Volvos so, hopefully, you’ll be ok.

decisionssmecisions · 13/01/2024 11:47

@MadameCamembert & it’s second hand so surely puts me at the top of the list!

Only if it’s ‘a little beaten up but reliable and is only to get you from A to B anyway.’ If it’s 4x4 you could be skating on thin ice.

MadameCamembert · 13/01/2024 11:31

I drive a Lexus LC.

Others to consider to name a few are:

Toyota
Infinity
Alfa Romeo
Cupra
Seat
Volvo
Genesis
Alpine
Maserati
Kia
Hyundai
Polestar
DS
Subaru
Fisker
Mitsubishi

Many, many different options that aren't the usual predictable German sheepmobiles.
