Why do people spend so much money on these?

AIBU to think that the only possible reason for having a PNP is to be a bit braggy?

My DP wants to get me one for my upcoming birthday, I have said it is a waste of money and to not bother. DP doesn't understand.

Your thoughts?

Me and my husband have matching ones , he got mine first not something I’d have bothered with but quite like it now. My car rarely leaves the drive so not fussed if people think I’m a dick or not

DuchessOfSausage · 10/01/2024 12:11

I would if I could get one close to my first name (think something like BAR81E).

The J14SJT (birthday and initials) ones are naff and usually are on a fairly old basic car.

Something too obvious and your car will be spotted wherever you go.

1990thatsme · 10/01/2024 12:13

They are definitely not considered “braggy” in my circles, quite the opposite.

However, people spend money on all kinds of things I consider naff, and I assume that feeling would be reciprocated.

Changingplace · 10/01/2024 12:13

They’re pretty pointless, DH had one once and I hated it, people can spend their money on what they like but I don’t see the point of them particularly.

Notstrongandstable · 10/01/2024 12:14

Tacky as hell

RedPony1 · 10/01/2024 12:18

i will never understand why people think they are tacky 😂

I have them on my 3 vehicles, most of the people i know have private plates.

People can spend their money on whatever they wish

Oh, and it's possible to go to museums AND buy expensive handbags 🙄

DuchessOfSausage · 10/01/2024 12:19

@Changingplace , you don't have to memorise the registration plate when you get a new car.
It took me years to remember mine. I had to make a little phrase from it before it stuck, and picture myself acting out the phrase.

Luckingfovely · 10/01/2024 12:19

They are rather cringey, but helpfully tell you quite a lot about their owners Grin

My friend had a huge amount of trouble when her number plate was cloned two hundred miles away. Constant tickets and it took a long time to sort out. She got a personalised plate because it's unlikely to be cloned as only really dull numbers are.

I've had the same problem and was tempted to do the same.

I don't like it when people try to make a word , but it doesn't quite say the word . Probably because someone has already bought the plate that says that.

DuchessOfSausage · 10/01/2024 12:21

@RedPony1 , if you have something like PLJ 25 or something, it's not tacky.

If you have a clapped out -01 plate Corsa with your initials on then it is.

SarahsHoneydew · 10/01/2024 12:21

I worked at a high end car dealership and I would say 80% of people had cherished numbers as they are called. A lot of them had had the same plate for years, some of them have literally nothing to do with their names, was something personal to them (partners per names etc)
On a side note, people who hate the ones that are spaced to look like something else should know, the dvla sell some of these knowing exactly what people are going to do with them then the police prosecute them for doing it. Very odd!!

Oreosareawful · 10/01/2024 12:23

Me and my husband have matching plates, its something personal to us. They are easier to remember and less likely to be cloned. He bought mine as a gift and I was thrilled.
My friend bought hers because it was fun and relevant when read out.
People who know me spot me on the road now and give me a wave.

Each to their own, I don't judge people for not having a personal plate and don't feel I should be judged for having one.

StillShocking · 10/01/2024 12:25

I find them tacky. I also find all-inclusive holidays tacky. There is definitely stuff I am snobby about. I never voice it to people irl, but do so online.

I wish I wasn’t like this but personalised number plates are on my tacky radar. It’s a bit ‘footballers’ wives’.

cuddlebear · 10/01/2024 12:29

I guess if I am honest I think they are dreadfully chavvy, but so what really.

I doubt my disapproval bothers anyone with a personalised plate, or any of the other things I think are equally tacky (sex ponds, kitchen islands, holidays in Dubai)

I keep it to myself, knowing others will have their own negative views about how I choose to spend my own money.

bastin · 10/01/2024 12:29

I had one for about four years. Sold it over ten years ago

I look back now and think it's tacky but I was young

I also decided I didn't want to stand out anymore

TurquoiseSeasAndSilverSand · 10/01/2024 12:30

I'm a geeky enthusiast for a particular type of car, my last one had a number which represented that particular model. I sold it with the car for a tidy sum.
I have no particular opinion on private plates, people like what they like, it isn't harming anyone. Lol at the common and tacky comment, gotta love Mumsnet Grin

justaboutdonenow · 10/01/2024 12:32

They're tacky as fuck & but have the advantage of being more memorable for reporting to the police when someone spots them driving dangerously.

TurquoiseSeasAndSilverSand · 10/01/2024 12:32

Just reading the previous comments. Apparently kitchen islands are tacky?? I don't have one, kitchen isn't big enough and I would find one annoying. But can't get my head around how they can be tacky 😆

Sammysquiz · 10/01/2024 12:33

Paying to have a different combination of letters and number on a bit of plastic on your car, when doing so makes bugger all difference, is the ultimate money for old rope!

Crazykatie · 10/01/2024 12:34

You spend your money on what you like they spend theirs, it’s pure vanity some are very risqué. Some of those plates are worth more than the cars they are on - really £100k plus no problem

justalittlesnoel · 10/01/2024 12:35

Me and DH have matching ones - pretty sure people think we're wanky but I bloody love them. It was a good anniversary gift for the man that has literally everything and he loves it!

I have seen the ‘tacky’ view expressed on other forums and in real life by people. Definitely not just a MN thing!

Vacant12 · 10/01/2024 12:49

I find them tacky, sorry. It's like people just want everyone to know how much disposable income they have. I can't see any other point to them, they literally don't serve a purpose

Had the same issue. Took ages to sort and authorities didnt believe the plate had been cloned. Constant tickets etc and we were genuinely concerned about the amount of criminal activity to the point I thought one morning we'd wake up to a police raid 😄

We have a police reference and letter from DVLA to send any time there's a new incident which is less often now. The personalised plate stopped most issues.

Chocolatecakewithsprinkles · 10/01/2024 12:53

I have rolled my eyes when walking past a truck with THE 8O55 on, thought that was twatty
