Why do people spend so much money on these?

AIBU to think that the only possible reason for having a PNP is to be a bit braggy?

My DP wants to get me one for my upcoming birthday, I have said it is a waste of money and to not bother. DP doesn't understand.

Your thoughts?

Who the fuck is Janet and what has a kitchen island got to do with a numberplate

Julimia · 14/01/2024 13:02

Why does anyone spend so much money on anything??... because they want it! Each to their own. If you dont want a private number plate... simple just say so! End of.

WeeJimmycranky · 14/01/2024 13:05

Had to laugh yesterday as a bloke in Lamborghini SUV with an illegal twat plate raced past me and then slammed his brakes on at the next set of traffic lights - they were green.
Gave him an excuse to let us all have the benefit of his bellend backfiring exhaust though. I assume the Police have given up bothering any kind of road enforcement here.

So; even if keeping the car for family you can remove the reg in advance if you wish so the dealer can register your car with your private plate from new. Not really practical if you need to drive your old car right up to delivery of the new one as you need to change your insurance, don't know about yours but changes cost money with mine.

I drove mine with my personal plates into the dealership and drove out 30 minutes later in my new car with the same personal plates on it. No need to make any changes to my insurance other than swapping the cars themselves which I would have had to do anyway.

Not everyone trades in their old car so the old car still needs insurance.

Kia have an excellent reputation for reliability and build quality, unlike Mercs. It seems like yours is the exception to the rule.

I'd expect them to be reliable, I don't think a company would offer a 7 year warranty if they were all having problems in the first 7 years. Wouldn't be good business would it.

I can understand designer bags and kitchen islands and hot tubs. They all serve a practical purpose. Designer bags looks nice...they make an outfit look nice. They hold your stuff. A kitchen island is a useful addition to a kitchen providing more workspace or a place to congregate. I can see why people may want these things. I cannot see why anyone would care about the configuration of the letters and numbers on their number plate.

Don't let it worry you. I don't think anyone understands everything.

Oh I understand....it's to brag

Pickingmyselfup · 14/01/2024 22:01

I had one for a while because I got it given but once I realised it could sell for thousands I sold it and it paid for the majority of my house deposit. Had I not needed thousands of pounds or it was worth nothing I would have kept it because it was almost like a family heirloom.

Some.people have so much money and don't know what to do with it so they get a private registration plate because why not.

Sometimes they have meaning like a special number.

Wow you can say that with confidence about everyone with a personalised number plate. So my friend's DD got one from her dad (friends ex) for her 18th. She has it on her car as her dad bought it for her, she couldn't care less but you know she is bragging. You really can't know everyone's motivation.

I said earlier my husband bought his when he got compensation for an injury. He was bed bound and would do things to pass the time. A doctor who was treating him had a personalised plate and DH wondered what one would cost. Started looking it up and finding one that would work for his name and he found one he liked and bought it for a bit of fun when life was pretty miserable. It's increased in value so it wasn't a bad investment. No bragging involved, if you knew him you would know that really isn't him.

I cringe when I see one, I find them tacky.

Each time their own I suppose but this is my personal view ...

I feel they are tacky and pretentious and, yes, they are to brag.

Personally I can't see why you'd want to brag by having a personal number plate. It makes me think you must literally be a bit stupid if you waste you money on something like that, regardless of how much money you have!

And those who have said they have not bought them to brag but to make an older car look newer. That's bragging!

AnnusMirabilis · 15/01/2024 03:59

I’m going to buy one actually. I’m reverting to my maiden name and there’s one on the DVLA website that spells my very unusual surname.

You’d never know unless you knew me, imagine something like PI11OCK. 😂 but obviously not pillock.

I don’t give a stuff what anyone else thinks.

Loafbeginsat60 · 15/01/2024 05:46

I have one that came from my grandads old motorbike so I like it because of that.

It's sitting in my boot and has been for the last two years - I really should do the paperwork and get it on the car! 🙄

Zapss · 15/01/2024 05:52

I saw one once that looked very like "PISSERS."

Not sure if that was the intention.

Comedycook · 15/01/2024 07:26

This is really hard work because no one wants to ever admit they got something to impress other people or brag.

You are spectacularly missing the point.

Our entire consumer culture and the whole concept of marketing is designed to make us buy things and believe we need them and to make other people think we are doing well.

Very very few of us are immune to this.

Personalised number plates are an absolute marketing triumph...

WeeJimmycranky · 15/01/2024 08:35

There is one on a car near me that is FUD 5G which he has illegally rearranged to FU D5G (on the back, he drives around without a front plate). DSG is a kind of gearbox on his shot box car and FU is obviously a lovely message to others.

Hmmm good luck with that.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/01/2024 11:32

My Uncle had one for his work van. He was a decorator and several snobby customers commented about the age of his perfectly good van so he got a personal plate so the age was no longer obvious.

WeeJimmycranky · 15/01/2024 11:40

This is why I couldn’t run my own business of that type. Any customer who started spouting on about how old my van was would be sacked as a customer straight away.

Oakbeam · 15/01/2024 12:27

I used to use a mortgage broker who had the opposite problem. Clients would assume that he was taking too much in commission if he arrived in his BMW, so he kept an old Astra for work.

If a mortgage broker turned up in an old Astra I’d assume he was pretty crap at his job!

Comedycook · 15/01/2024 13:06

New cars aren't impressive anymore. It usually just means you've taken on a shit load of credit

It's illegal to make your cat look newer, everyones make them look older unless you're lucky enough to find what you want from the same year

DuchessOfSausage · 19/01/2024 12:33

How do I make my cat look younger? If I pop a ribbon on its tail would that be illegal?
