Why do people spend so much money on these?

AIBU to think that the only possible reason for having a PNP is to be a bit braggy?

My DP wants to get me one for my upcoming birthday, I have said it is a waste of money and to not bother. DP doesn't understand.

Your thoughts?

The DVLA doesn't issue every number. IIRC WA11KER and WA17KER weren't issued

DogsAreBetterThanHusbands · 11/01/2024 16:19

Not a fan really but I used to drive along Chelsea Embankment quite a bit and there were often 2 cars parked on a driveway, one with the number plate '2B' and the one next to in 'NOT 2B', which always made me smile!

Shade17 · 11/01/2024 16:23

sondot · 11/01/2024 16:16

@Shade17

It’s a low number. I think they held back 1-20, double/triple consecutive digits, the 10s and 100s and 123/321.

Thanks!! I find the whole registration system really interesting but my knowledge is lacking

And then anything really interesting went to auction like N1 CKS.

That’s a well known pair and the perfect example of “fun” plates.

@Ormside , I'd judge the plate.
My car is tiny and I'm always losing it in car parks

If you park with your car level with larger cars you'll stand a better chance of finding it - and others won't think they've spotted a space only to find yours tucked away at the back Duchess 😀

Kwasi · 11/01/2024 16:44

I have one. It didn't cost a fortune; less than most people I know spend on wine in a month.

It means I only have one reg to remember for the rest of my life.

Where I live, private plates are ten a penny. They're as normal as not having the number plaque that comes with your house.

Welshlady89 · 11/01/2024 16:55

The absolute epitome of tacky!

DuchessOfSausage · 11/01/2024 16:58

@Isittimeformynapyet , there are lots of SUV type cars where I am.

MrsSunshine2b · 11/01/2024 17:38

My personal opinion is they are ostentatious and tacky, but that's irrelevant here. The gift is supposed to be for you, not him. Tell him it's a kind thought but not your thing and you'd rather something different.

Joeslaol00 · 11/01/2024 18:01

Definitely not for me .Each to their own .

MzHz · 11/01/2024 18:06

I got one for my ds 18th, he was thrilled, it’s not flashy and only cost £250. Doubt it will ever be worth anything, unless he cures cancer or ends wars/hunger etc 😆

it’s not even obviously personalised, but is to him.

but I did see on here once that someone had spotted AIBFU

Guessing it’s our very own MN Justine

Raspberrymoon49 · 11/01/2024 18:12

Pathetic, what are owners trying to prove

Wishbone436 · 11/01/2024 19:30

My husband has one in our shared car. I hated them before & I still hate them now! I just think they’re cringy and pointless 🤯

Nothing. What is it you think I'm trying to prove?

Throwaway1234567890000000 · 11/01/2024 20:28

Each to their own. Some people like them, others don’t.

My husband wanted one, so I got him one. He would like me to have one and would like to buy one for me, however I have absolutely zero interest in having one so he doesn’t.

His does have his actual name on though. The ones I don’t understand are the ones who which don’t spell anything, aren’t the initials for anything and really don’t make sense/you can’t make out what they’re trying to spell out (but they are trying to spell out a name or word and the person who owns them thinks it’s obvious).

Throwaway1234567890000000 · 11/01/2024 20:30

Our Son also has a name that can go (cheaply and easily) on a number plate in a way that’s totally readable - think Joe 3456 or something. He will get one for his 18th birthday because he would love one.

Daughter doesn’t have a name that could be put on a plate but if she did want one, she could have her initials…

I think people can spend their money on whatever they like. People who spend money on museum memberships aren’t better people than those who choose to spend money on handbags. Snobbery on something that is entirely personal choice is unnecessary and odd.

Right so I take it you don't have an opinion on anything, at all, ever? That's actually worse than 'snobbery' (or as it's commonly known: asking a simple question/discussion)

BobnLen · 11/01/2024 20:57

Comedycook · 11/01/2024 10:22

And again...this is about impressing people isn't it. Why do you give a dam if a random person can see how old your car is?

I was just commenting, I haven't got one, people can see what age my car is as it has it's original number plate

theexceliconisgreen · 11/01/2024 21:10

I got one because I like the idea of having all my cars from now and in the future having the same number plate. It's a standard format one, with my initials and birthday. Cost £250 and I used a bonus from work to pay for it.

Certainly not the worst thing people can spend money on!

StickyStickyStickSticks · 11/01/2024 21:10

Very snobby post incoming… it depends what car they are on.

Bright white new shiny Range Rover = screams chavvy/new money/drug dealer

older estate vehicle or something “country” = not so bad

I personally dislike them anyway and agree they are a bit of a weird thing to spend so much money on one. But some people obviously want to. DH actually has one on his (old series 1) Land Rover… which does make me cringe tbh, but he had it before we met.

PyongyangKipperbang · 11/01/2024 21:13

My sons ex GF had a very distinctive number plate that, by coincidence, looked like a word. Say it was BL01NDE,

She didnt even notice until I pointed it out. She sold it and got LOADS for it as it was so popular, think it worked out to be about half the worth of the car! So in that respect, good for her, but I would never deliberately buy one and in fact the reason she sold it was because a) the money obviously but b) because she didnt want people to think she had chosen it! The two people I know who have them are total wankers and really fit the stereotype.

ShirleyPhallus · 11/01/2024 21:49

Whingebob · 11/01/2024 20:32

Well yeah, but I don’t think I’m a better person for liking something over something else

Whingebob · 11/01/2024 22:09

So you don't have any negative opinions on anything, got it.

Bearing in mind that we're talking about personalised number plates here and not some deep personal topic😭 even if someone is a 'snob', oh well

MrsPetty · 11/01/2024 22:18

My husband bought me one because I didn’t like that the original number plate had a Z in it 😂 I’m old … there didn’t used to be Z’s on number plates and I can’t get used to it. I love my personal one. It has my initials and my birth dates. And it really suits my car. I don’t feel it’s anything to do with bragging …

juicyfruitmtume · 12/01/2024 04:12

Genuine question ...

If they are not for show, what is the point of them?
